Hey ! Hello everyone, I'm new here, but I'm almost sure i can help some of you. As you all known, Geforce 8600M GT is what we can call, a damn nice 3d card, many laptop are using it, why ? Because it's simply the best Report Quality Price.

Here we go, after two days of hard work ( :) ) i finally find the best parameters to play Crysis using 1280x800 in Medium+ (High-Medium).

Firstly, you need to know, you will got to Overclock your Geforce, and make some good optimisation.

I'm using Windows Xp

Here is my laptop configuration:

  • Inspiron 1520
  • Geforce 8600M GT
  • 2GB DDR (667Mhz)
  • Intel Centrino Duo (2.0Ghz)
  • Windows XP

1\ Tweaking your Windows XP, for Memory & UC optimisation.

I used tree little tools to optimise my windows.

  1. TweakXp (Don't use AutoTuner Option)
  2. CCleaner
  3. Hijackthis
  4. Xp-Registry

I can't write a tutorial for all those tools, they're realy easy to use.

TweakXp, will give some little tweaks to your WindowsXP.

CCleaner, will clean your Reg and temp files.

Hijackthis will allow you to remove things that launch with your Windows Boot.

Xp-Registry, will allow you to remove every useless windows's services (Just click Optimiser).

2\ Download latest Nvidia Drivers.

v169.17 on Laptopvideo2go.

You need to install the modded inf !

You need to uninstall the old drivers using Driver Cleaner Pro !

3\ Overclock your Geforce 8600M GT.

Now you need to download RivaTuner 2.06.

-3.1\ Step by Step

# Firstly click on Customize

riva1fg4.jpg

# Now click on Fan, and click Direct Control, then, Performance 3D > 100%.

riva2rm2.jpg

Save it as FAN 100% (Fan profil Settings).

# Now click Overclocking.

frquencieswr1.jpg

I tried every frequencies possible for this card and here is the best frequencies:

Do like in picture, then, save as 660/1320/500 profile and ask Rivatuner to apply it at starting.

I tested for 2hours those frequencies, using 3DMark2006, and plaid Crysis for 1h. No artefact's and the temperature never goes more than 60°Celcius.

# Click OK

# Click Settings

riva3dt5.jpg

Do like in picture, then click OK.

4\ Control of Laptop Fans.

If you have Dell Inspiron Inspiron/Latitude/Precision you can download I8kfanGUI.

Else, you need to find a software that will allow you to control your laptop's fans.

Simply setup this soft and launch it, now click, Force fans to high Speed.

fanjs3.jpg

5\ Crysis Optimisation.

ATi & Nvidia :

1- Download ShaderCache.pak

2- Then go to Crysis folder ( Program files/Electronics Arts/Crytek/Crysis/game)

3- Backup the old ShaderCache.pak in a separate folder.

4- Paste the new ShaderCache.pak.

5- Dell the Shader folder into My Documents/My game/Crysis/.

6- Now download the modified CrysisFPSTweaker and follow the instructions.

7-(Click on High).

8- Launch Crysis only in DX9 same if you're using vista with DX10, launch the game using:

c:\Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\Crytek\Crysis\Bin32\Crysis.exe" -dx9

6\ Modifying Options in Nvidia Panel

1\ Firstly, ask powermizer to do nothing.

2\ Now do as in Pictures. (Sorry it's in french, you can do it, counting the options, and word are approximately the same)

nvidia1vy4.jpg

nvidia2cj0.jpg

7\ nHancer

1\ Firstly, donwload nHancer.

2\ Verify that every options are like in pictures.

Here we go, it should be good !

Agreed, I have the DDR2 version of 8600m GT in my Inspiron 1720 with 4 GB RAM and Centrino Duo. It took some serious tweaking and overclocking with riva tuner + latest drivers from laptopvideo2go to get respectable quality and frames just running in DX9 mode!!

Personally I am running vista atm with Crysis, but I guess XP is probably going to give better performance and is a better OS choice for unless you have an 8800. Most people will find that an 8600 GT just wont give very playable performance in DX10 mode...at least not for crysis.

I use those same settings when I OC my 8400M GS. When I had the demo, I had removed all the foliage and it gave me superb framerate at the loss of............well pretty much the whole environment.

Dont know how you overclocked that high... but no way thats stable..... maximum stable OC for DD2 2568600GT has been around 575/475 maybe slightly higher... if I go any higher as soon as i hit apply my whole screen artifacts and gotta restart.

pretty sure most users report the same thing....

By the way, i'm working on something better...

I think u got the unlucky batch of 8600m gt release.... As the tip from thread starter..i can even go a bit further.. but i kept it low a bit to avoid 'laptop out of order'.. hehe..

Owh! n the oc at 660/500..it is stable..at least for me.. Playin crysis for hours...n other games too..

N for thread starter..thx for the guide.. gonna try it... :) but i finished crysis 2 times already... :) :P

Edit: Tried it already..nothing really happen except the game glow TOO much!!

Well, so I got the lucky batch of 8600gt too (Acer 5920G). Mine is STABLE and does not overheat at 600(core)/450(memory) Just because I DIDN't want to push further. I am gonna try, and I am pretty sure this damm card will work at 640.

I can overclock my 8600gt to 660/530 with no artifacts at about 62 degrees under stress and about 46 under just Windows Vista

DDRIII or DDRII ? With does settings my computer will crash instant...

It is DDR2 according to RivaTuner 2.06.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 and it has excellent cooling and fans :)

I used to go 680/550 but after about an hour it would artifact, but I've been using 660/530 for quite a while now and its stable to play games for several, several hours.

I'm not sure why yours doesn't do it ?? Strange.

Anyway I'm going to try this tweak guide and see how I get with Crysis :)

Are you using any tools, or fan control, or anything that could help the 3D Card ? Are you also using Vista or XP ? Anything that could allow those frequencies ? I really don't understand... Any BIOS things modded ?

Did you desactiv shared memory ?

Did you modify voltage ?

I can never get to overclock my card, no matter what drivers I test with... Any reason for that happening?

Hi there i have a major problem and im counting on your support. Few days ago i bought a new laptop in order to play new games including CRYSIS ofcourse. His spec: inter core 2 duo 2,0 Ghz 4mb cache, 2DRR 667 Kingston, and ofcourse 8600M GT 512. I can play it for about 1min and then it frezzes. But not computer, just Crysis. I can easily go back to WIN. I tried to install many drivers but that did't help. When im playing bechmarks from crysis everything is smooth and nice. Other games work fine such as Cod 2 or Cod MW. Im working on Vista 32 bit Ultimate. The laptop is Compal FL90.

Ps. Im playing on DooM version(RIP 1,8 GB), i will install demo and see how it work.

Thanks for help :)

Im also using vista and my graphics card is 8600m gt 512 mb.

So... I don't know... Strange, but don't worry FAN will automaticly change his speed if you playing, or if you 3D Card is Sought.

So, I did everything you said for my 1720, same specs. When I try to launch the Crysis application it tells me it doesn't work because MS1110011 or something isn't there.

EDIT - Double post.

The command was MSDTTD.dll. or something actually.

I also have the 8600M GT 512 Mb DDR2. Rivatuner doesn't show me any Fan Speed, too. I am wondering if my card has a fan at all. If i listen closely when playing i only hear the system Fan. I Think this might be the difference between those who can play overclocked at 60 degrees and those who get up to 80 degrees stock under stress. The GPU should be cooled by the heatpipes which also cool the CPU, als as i have seen by opening my laptop it seems like the GPU comes after the CPU, so the cooling fluid is preheated when it reaches the GPU. Therefore, GPU temp also depends on how hot you CPU gets.

My nTune sais me that my GPU goes up to 70 degrees when running 3d Mark 06. that would be in the middle of all posted temps.

I myself am still looking doubtfully at all the stuff concerning overclocking. The last card i overclocked was a Riva TNT with 16 MB SD Ram ;-) and therefor i put an Active fan on it and heat sinks on the memory^^
