How to use the modded INF

Recommended Posts

Here is a quick guide to how to install a driver with the modded INF.

We here at LV2go have both the driver and the INF as seperate downloads.

This is done on purpose for various reasons (some legal) but for nearly all Laptop users the modded INFs needs to be downloaded as well as the driver.

Here is a suggested way to grab the driver and the modded INF:

Find the the driver you would like to install, for beginners it's probably best to grab one with lots of feedback and read the posts to get an idea of what your up against.

Make sure you have the right driver for your Operating System and the right version ie 32bit or 64bit.

Download the driver from this site NVIDIA Video Drivers and Tools or straight from Nvidia Nvidia drivers.

Once downloaded extract the files to a directory where you'll find them again later.

NOW download the modded INF and put it in the same directory as you have just extracted the driver, if you are not overwriting the original INF then something is wrong.

It is VITAL you over write the original INF, this is where the most of you'se go wrong (I think) and the driver won't install.

It should now be quite safe to use setup.exe to install the driver or probably a better way is to use the "have disk method' in device properties.

Both these intall methods are explained further in the FAQ

Now go and have a play with the drivers

where the post says...

"NOW download the modded INF and put it in the same directory as you have just extracted the driver, if you are not overwriting the original INF then something is wrong."

..most if not all readers might well be told that the "NOW" part is particularly important as the inf file will be in the extracted .exe file's contents (and it won't be the modified .inf file) and if the actual modified .inf file is (at the time it is extracted) in the same folder as where the extracted .exe contents go, then the extraction process will overwrite the modified .inf file. No or am I presuming too much?

where the post says...

'extract the file' (presumably that means the downloaded driver's .exe file), but it's unclear why the FAQ refers to extraction when my downloaded driver's .exe file doesn't appear to be either compacted or zipped, plus right clicking doesn't list any means to extract the /exe file (and I believe my my Windows 7 Pro OS has an extractor for unzipping and/or extracting such files).

So I'm a little at a loss as to why the initial FAQ instructions aren't just a little bit more clear and/or complete (ie; place more emphasis and/or explanation about the "NOW download the modified .inf file" and also the part about extracting the downloaded driver's .exe). Either I'm missing something here or perhaps the driver's .exe downloads on Firefox without needing extraction and/or some downloaded driver /exe's don't need extraction.

No flames intended. First time visiting the site. Much appreciate the effort and server time afforded the masses.

Lastly, some mention might well address that the driver file and modified inf file properties indicate these file may be blocked to protect your computer. Appreciate an educated reply to what if anything needs be done at that point, ie; go ahead and select the un-block button or not?

Hi guys,

is it only for me or are more or less all of the modded infs for xp64 down right now?

Either I get

Error: The request for '/infs/270series/27051_winxp64/nv4_disp.inf' was not found on this server.

or

simply

This INF file is currently not available for download.

cheers

Blues

This may be a dumb question but the only info i can find seems to be about the modded inf's thats it,

with the INF ENHANCER(not the modded inf's) what do I do with the file it gives me, I tried replacing it like I would with the modded inf but then Nvidia wouldn't install the driver, and I can't seem to find an nv4_disp.inf to over write, I figured this is either so blatantly obvious that the webmasters decided it need NO instruction either on that page or in the Frequently answered questions.

Can someone tell me what I'm supposed to do with it?

Thanks

For people who can't the location of the .inf file which is to be replaced: It's in the /Display.Driver directory where the installer .exe can be found. Thanks, by the way ;)

i got tired of waiting for the modded infs so i made my own for the 290.53 (Skyrim edition) by changing the line relevant to my card to not check for a vendor-specific id. its working fine so far, and Skyrim seems to working slightly better than before. are there other modifications done to the modded infs other than allowing them to be used across all devices?

I couldn't post my own threat so I add a reply here. The info for my VGA is in my profile: http://forums.laptopvideo2go.com/user/46729-alirezanoori/ Today I downloaded and installed the Windows 8 Consumer Preview. I searched and the Geforce website returns the 295.73 version for the Windows 8 so I downloaded the driver and then I downloaded the modded inf file from http://laptopvideo2go.com/infs/295series/29573_win7x64/nvwi.inf and put it in the Display.Driver folder. I tried both the setup.exe and the Have-disk method. None of them worked. I tried to edit the nvwi.inf file but I couldn't get it to work either. What am I missing? The closest I got to the setup was in the Have-Disk method when Windows returned an error saying: "The hash for the file is not present in the specified catalog file. The file is likely corrupt or the victim of tampering." Thanks.

You need convert the txt file that you copyied or downloaded to a true system setup file to to do that in notepad or wordpad open the text file and in the save as dialog box type "nvwi.inf". Then overwrite the orginal file in the driver directory.

Maybe this will help if people are still confused

1. Download a driver from the driver forum. It will be a .exe file

2. Double click that file and it will extract to a folder in the same root directory you are in. The folder will be named for whichever driver version you just downloaded.

3. Download the modified INF file. It will be a file called "nvwi". You don't need to modify or do anything to this file. Right click and check it's properties and you will see that it is an .inf file. A setup information file.

4. Open the folder that was created in step 2. Inside this folder will be a folder called "Display.Driver"

5. Open "Display.Driver" and you will find it contains a file with a same name as the modified INF you just downloaded. NVWI.

6. Either delete the NVWI.INF from "Display.Driver" and move the modified NVWI.INF to that folder. Or just copy the modified NVWI.INF to that folder which will overwrite the original file. The point is to replace the original NVWI.INF file with the modified version you downloaded.

That is pretty much it. Hopefully that helps anyone that was having issues.

Hi guys. I'm hoping someone can help me. I recently bought this Toshiba laptop http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/product/Satellite-P850-31L/1138457/toshibaShop/false/

Now the latest OEM driver available for it on the Toshiba website is 305.46.  i'm running 310.70 on my PC and wanted the same on my laptop, so I though I could use your service with the modified .INF  files to install the latest GT640M drivers.

I downloaded the latest driver and the modified .INF, I copied the modified nvwi.INF to display driver folder and overwrote the original. I ran the driver and this time it passed the compatibility check. So I though great. But no matter how many times I try, a few minutes after the driver starts installing it says that it has failed to install the display driver.

I've tried with my OEM driver installed, I've tried after uninstalling the driver and running a driver sweeper, I've tried running it as admin but always the same error. Does anyone have any ideas?

What should I do if the modified inf isn't available. By example, when I try to download the modified inf for version 302.92 for Windows 7, I get the Error: The requested address '/infs/300series/30292_win7x32/NVCV.INF' was not found on this server. What should I do?

Quick question, couldn't find the answer in the FAQ:

When I click on, "Click here to download the modified INF file" it displays the file in a webpage instead of letting me download it.

I tried to right click and, "Save target as," but it wants to save it as an HTM file called, "nv_dispi.htm".

My browser is IE and my OS is Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit. What do I need to do/change/correct/fix to download the file?

Thanks in advance!

I doubt the driver makes any difference - with my FX 1600M it was 0 to 1 %. Get the latest that works - meaning 341.05 probably. Either with the original inf or lv2go modified inf.
