Dell Vostro BIOS access

F2 on boot I think (says on screen during boot). Discovered F12 opens up some nice diagnostic tools too. Can't say I notice the noise from the HD on my 1500.

Does anybody know how to access the BIOS on a Dell vostro 1500 - I understand that it is possible to set the hard drive mode to 'quiet' ?

During the boot up phase where the white bar goes across the screen, press F2.

There is a message in the upper right of the screen, it goes pretty quick, timing is crucial.

There are a lot of performance settings here that can/should be changed.

I have mine set to "bypass" (not sure if it does a lot) and also have it running in AHCI mode. (dont know if the Vostro has this... Cant see why not...)

There is an option in the bios that gives you the oprion to set to AHCI ... apparently its a different way to increase performance of the drive.

Here is a quote from Intel

"Native Command Queuing (NCQ) is a feature supported by Advanced Host Controller Interface (AHCI). It allows ATA drives to accept more than one command at a time and dynamically reorder the commands for maximum efficiency. NCQ, when used in conjunction with a hard drive that supports NCQ, can increase storage performance on random workloads."
