Thanks for the links, but the patches don't seem to work for me.
I have a Windows XP SP3 system (genuine). I didn't install SP3 myself. It came with the CD.
Still, after the installation and the reboot, no audio device is there, neither can I listen to any sound.
Could you please tell me if there's a solution for that?

I don't think these will work with your SoundMAX device.
Try the drivers from here.
