Guest Ibby
OK, so this is the problem card out of all of them. I've tried all of the drivers available so far, be it modded or official. the latest drivers cause the Wireless to turn off in Windows 7 x64 and when I boot in 'ignore driver signing' mode it works fine. I'm using a Dell Studio XPS 13 and I really need to fix this problem! When some of the drivers work (notably the older ones for Windows Vista), the signal quality is really bad and I literally have to be right next to the router to get a signal. That said, it frequently drops the connection too. It might be due to using an a/b/g router on WPA-PSK, but I'm not sure where to go from here. Any help would be welcome and I'm ready to try any suggestions that may fix the problem.

I have been struggling with this for months now. I have tried about a dozen of your drivers with no help. The most stable one seems to be an older one you reposted for someone asking for it (7.6.1.204 is the driver version in my driver properties tab, if it helps). But it still drops like a buttered egg at an egg toss. I'm using Win7 x64 (RC, but hopefully the real deal soon). Also, the laptop is a Dell Studio 14z. Guest rabidkangaroo
Do you guys also notice that the fan is always running with the wireless on? I wonder if the card keeps resetting due to heat. Maybe it's a bad placement design. I've tried running the card on half power, but that didn't seem to help. Guest rabidkangaroo
Dell has finally released a new version of the driver! It is much more stable than any I have tried up to now. It still drops a little. The released version is:8.0.0.144. Which I tried from your site, but wasn't stable. I would like to have the more powerful controls with the modified inf file though. Thank you for going to all the trouble of figuring out what is wrong. Atheros should be ashamed and pay you for doing their tech work. mobilenvidia
My card is taking for ever to get here. Try driver 8.0.0.239 this is Dell's driver for the 1515 to fix connection issues.
mobilenvidia
Just installed Dell WLAN 1515 and installed 8.0.0.239 and it works just fine. Driver is WHQL and I get 'Excellent' signal strength from router. I'll have to do a speed test now, seeing it's in the machine.
Guest dragoster
I have the Dell Studio 14z with the 5009 Atheros chipset, or Dell 1515 as they call it, on a Win 7 64bit system. The problem is that it only connects when I am a few feet from the wireless router. As soon as I am more than 10-15 yards away the connection is either intermittently dropped or it cannot connect at all. As soon as I reinstall the driver (device manager, uninstall device, install device) the wireless card connects at full speed, but this only lasts less than a minute. I had send me a new Dell 1515 card that I replaced without much success. The connection is slightly more stable but still drops after 1 or 2 minutes of being connected. After the connection is dropped when I am 10 yards away trying to use the Windows repair utility does not work. I have tried a lot of the drivers on this website, and of course the latest Dell drivers and the ones from Windows Update, but all display a similar behavior. The latest Win 7 non-modded driver 8.0.0.239 is slightly most stable, but still not useable. Based on the Dell tech support advice I have reinstalled Win 7 fresh with no luck. Since I've replaced the card itself and I would say it's highly unlikely that I received 2 bad cards in a row there could only a few things causing the dropped connection: 1. Conflict with another hardware on this machine. (I should mention that all the drivers for the other components in the system are up to date) 2. A wireless connection setting that makes the card not work well with a wireless g router. 3. A defective antenna assembly. When I reinstalled the replacement card I made sure that the two antenna wires were connected well to the card. My next troubleshooting steps will be to a) try the Intel 5100 card :) replace the antenna assembly c) try a wireless-g card, like the dell 1397. I would appreciate if anyone had any ideas on this or had experienced something similar. I have until next 12/16/09 to return the machine if I can't figure this out. Millions thanks, -D
mobilenvidia
You are using driver 8.0.0.239 ?
Guest dragoster
I figured out the cause of the problem. One of the antenna wires was not connecting well to the connector on the card. I had to reroute the cable a little differently, hold it in place with same mask tape and bend the antenna connector ever so slightly with some small pliers. After all this the card performs flawlessly with the 8.0.0.239 driver. However, Dell is sending me a new replacement laptop anyway, because I complained so much. Thanks again for your help, -D
Guest rabid kangaroo
dragoster: I have taken my computer apart and disconnected/reconnected the antenna wires. I still experience dropped connections. I notice it most when I am doing heavy internet use (Hulu, other video), and when I am on a network with other users. I use this computer both at home and school and experience the same problems. When doing normal internet browsing, I don't notice that it drops signal. Guest rabidkangaroo
I was getting disconnects as well 8.0.0.239 fixed this issue. Which card did you choose? I have chosen AR9002WB-1NG #1, AR5008x, AR5008WB-EG#1. The first and third still drop signal, and the second didn't work at all? These are from the 8.0.0.279 driver, netathr.inf file. Guest rabidkangaroo
Hey mobilenvidia, I don't know how you got your card to work, but mine still drops all the time. I can't go more than 10 minutes without it dropping. Using AR928X from the netathrx.inf file of 8.0.0.279 driver is more stable so far, but still drops the signal all the freaking time. Hardware IDs: PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_002A&SUBSYS_0200168C&REV_01 PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_002A&SUBSYS_0200168C PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_002A&CC_028000 PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_002A&CC_0280 System: Dell Studio14z Windows 7 (RC1) 64bit. Is there a different (maybe intel) card that I can swap into this thing? I hate Atheros with a passion now.
Guest rabidkangaroo
Mobilenvidia: Thank you soooooo much for modding the 279 driver! I finally have a stable driver! No drops in more than 2 hours! (the 279 version I was using was unmodded.) Why can't atheros create stable drivers?!
