ACER BIOS Update instructions

INSTRUCTIONS:

There are different ways how to update your BIOS. It dependes on what kind of BIOS file you get in the ZIP archive that you download.

1. WHP file

Winphlash is a Windows based utility for flashing the BIOS on majority of new ACER notebooks. Below are instructions to assist with installing the utility and how to use the utility to flash your BIOS, should that be necessary.

To install the Winphlash utility, please follow these instructions.

1. Download the Winphlash utility to your hard drive from HERE

2. Double-click on the file winphlash.exe to extract and install the application.

To use the utility to flash the BIOS, please follow these instructions.

1. You will need to ensure that you have the latest BIOS ROM file from our Drivers and Downloads section. It is suggested that you you save this file to the winphlash directory, as it is required to flash the BIOS.

2. Navigate to the winphlash directory:

C:\Program Files\Phoenix Technologies Ltd\WinPhlash\

3. Double-click on WinPhlash.exe to launch the program and view the box below.

winphlash.gif

4. It is recommended to leave the defaults and only change the second input box. Where it shows "Specify new BIOS file:" type in that line the name of the BIOS ROM file. If the file is in a directory other than the Winphlash directory, the full path to the file will be required. (C:\<directory name>\<filename.ROM>)

5. Press the Flash BIOS button to flash the BIOS.

6. Follow the instructions on screen. You should be prompted to reboot the system.

2. ROM file or any other type

With this file you need a bootable floppy disk with a command line file (p.bat, etc) which usually comes in the downloaded ZIP archive of your BIOS. All you have to do is run the command line file (usually is P.bat, or flash.exe, etc...) in clean DOS mode (not Windows DOS).

Here are all the other BIOS update programs/tools (command line files) in case the program for flashing your BIOS is not included in the ZIP arcive that you download.

Warning: By flashing your motherboard, you agree to accept the possibility of BIOS flash failure. If your System is stable and working we recommend that you DO NOT try to upgrade your BIOS.

Do not use a wrong utility to update a BIOS, this can damage your System !

If you need any assistance on updating your BIOS, don't hesitate to PM me.....

Hi,

I'm not far from flashing my graphic card bios using WinPlash.

On the other hand it is such a delicate operation that I'm hesitating a little bit.

I downloaded the package corresponding to my card in the list which appears in this post.

The package contains a WPH file so I guessed I should follow the first set of instructions 1. WHP file .

Is it WPH or WHP ? Or is there a difference between those two types ?

And then in the step 4 here is what is written:

Does that mean I need a ROM file after all, I think it is just a mistake, but I really need to make sure.

I don't want to have my graphic card going mental once I flashed it.

Hope you can help me. :)

Thanks very much.

I have an Acer Extensa 5420-5687.

The Europe Drivers & Utilities page ( http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/ex_5420.html ) contains the BIOS update, 1.16, which I intend to use.

The problem is, it contains no instructions for using said download, and inside the zip the readme is... well... kind of incomprehensible:

> 1.Update SLP2.0 code

> 2.Fix PMIO 0x68 bit1 set 1 when S3 resume

> 3.Update KBC firmware to 2.29

> I. Modify algorithm to support Annie Internal/external NumLock function.

The zip contains the following file structure:

[v1.16.zip] --->

ATI --->

ABVXD.VXD

flash.sys

POM116.EXE

POM116.wph

ACERACDC.EXE

PHLASH16.EXE

POM.bat

POM116.rom

readme.txt (contents listed above)

As you can see, it has both a wph file and a rom, and since I was taught from a young age to be paranoid about anything involving computers and the word "flash", especially when used as a verb, I'm not touching it with WinPhlash until I absolutely know there is a way to boot from a disc. And since I don't have a floppy drive, and don't likely intend on installing one, can you recommend a way to use an optical disc instead?

Hm. Well, I just wonder if I put that on any medium if it's going to just boot when I use the boot menu. Does it not need DOS runtime or anything?

Wonder,

Is it possible to flach if the bios is locked with a password.

I am thinking... insted of sending it to ACER with an RMA ticket and have the pw reset (huge cost).

I might as well update bios?

Many thanks if there is an answer!

Hello Everyone...

I need some help here..

I have a notebook that been 2 years use. Mine was Zepti Znote 6615WD, Denmark Assembly, bought in UK.

Now, i' having this weird condition that i cannot upgrade the memory upto 4GB or 3GB, i stuck at the max 2.5GB. The sound and modem wont start if i put 4GB or 3GB mem.

I'm thinking that this is the cause of a bug in BIOS.

My motherboard is ACER MPAD-MSAE Customer Reference Board, with the latest version BIOS from Zepto as the manufacture is version z1.09. ftp://ftp.zepto.dk/

Now, i want to ask you guys/girls...

Can i use an ACER BIOS Release for other motherboard and flash it to my notebook motherbord?

Which one is it?

My Notebook Specs:

T7600, Nvidia 7600 go, 2.5GB mem, 160GB HDD, 15.4".

BIOS: ftp://ftp.zepto.dk/Notebooks/Discontinued...BIOS/v1.09v.iso

Thank you for everyone that wlling to help.

You can mail me at: i.am.iyep@gmail.com

Thanks

BG,

iyep
