Just wanted to let everyone know that the Dell version of the Alps drivers 'Charlie T' posted above also work just fine in my old Dell Latitude [which is NOT on their list of affected models]. The touchpad has a separate configuration GUI, but still calls the mouse configuration GUI as well. It would seem to me that the core resident processes are a bit smaller and less CPU hungry than the old 5.xxx version I was running. Nice to have! Also included them in the thread title for all to read.

By the way, the drivers appear to be generic, as I can't recall seeing any DEV_IDs in the INF at all.

Thanks Charlie T!!

The problem with the newest dell touchpad drivers is that they've incorporated their god-awful GUI and seem to have eliminated tap zones. I recently had to replace my HD in my Latitude D820 and I can no longer use the Dell driver to tap the top corner of my touchpad to emulate a middle mouse click, I'm hoping the older versions of the driver will revert back to before they used Dell's GUI.

If this link doesn't work for you, look under downloads for the HP Mini 311. This version seemed to be 7.5.xx; although the driver itself looked more like 7.105. I'm not quite sure how this works yet.

Two new notes:

There is now a Windows 7 version of the ALPS driver that installs only on Windows 7. 7.2.302.106 It is available here:

http://cdgenp01.csd.toshiba.com/content/support/downloads/driver_touchpad_alps_TC40050800A.exe

The new version on the HP website recognizes the track-stick and touchpad, but as soon as a setting is changed, the stick and pad are both disabled on a Dell Precision M4400. Will test and report on a Toshiba Tecra M7.

Windows 7 Update:

Toshiba

The latest drivers I've found are available on Toshiba's website. Go to support.toshiba.com and select "Latest Drivers..." and then "Touchpad" from the drop-down menu. This will provide you with the following version:

7.102.302.203

10/1/2009

I am successfully using this version on a Dell Precision M4400 (3-button pointing stick plus 3-button trackpad) and a Toshiba Tecra M7. (two-button trackpad) This is practically a pure ALPS installer, since I think it was rushed out the door to fix a lack-of-responsivity bug in Windows 7 for Toshiba laptops. Tosh outfits an especially high proportion of its laptops with ALPS trackpads, I'd imagine, because both companies are Japanese.

Please note that this version does not have frozen cursor animations. Unfortunately, while maintaining the same installer mechanism as Synaptics trackpads, ALPS trackpads do not support multi-touch, and generally have fewer features than Synaptics trackpads.

That said, to optimize my experience, I set the middle button on the pointing-stick to Auto-scroll, meaning that tapping it once puts it in scrolling mode, which is nice for Firefox, which otherwise requires you to hold down the middle button to scroll.

I also increased the sensitivity, (there are no sliders for reducing palm-checking sensitivity) and increased the speed relative to the Windows default, which I keep at 50%. This seems to be ideal for external mice, although for my Logitech mice, I do use SetPoint and don't have SetPoint set to override the Windows Mouse settings.

Dell

That said, if you want an official Dell driver, which might be ideal since the ALPS driver described above sometimes renders the trackpad unresponsive after resuming from Standby, you'll have to deal with their pretty, but rather more limited (in some senses) GUI. The latest version is A11, available on the Precision M4400 Windows 7 64-bit download page:

7.102.101.223

7/29/2009

The Dell GUI supports zoom along the left side of the trackpad and circular scrolling. I don't know if these features can be enabled in the ALPS GUI via the registry. I do know that I was unable to disable the Dell GUI via the registry, despite being apple to change the "UseCustomGUI" settings. I also know that both these drivers support Firefox out of the box, which did not use to be the case: such support used to require changing the application name from "Firefox" to "Netscape". The Dell driver set allows setting "acceleration" for the pointing stick and "speed" for the trackpad. I don't know what exactly these names correspond to. Do note that Dell still has not fixed the animated cursor bug. (ugh...)

Also, Acer has the following driver available for the AOD-150 netbook:

8/7/2009

7.105.2002.1107

Frozen cursors. Who knows what these numbers really mean? Furthermore, this driver comes with an ALPS control panel, not as attractive as the Toshiba/ALPS one, allows for circular scrolling, and also doesn't suck like the Dell GUI does. This appears to be the GUI they show on their website.

Dell's posted a new version of the Windows 7 ALPS driver for the Latitude E6400. It seems to fix the issue of the touchpad locking up after a wake from sleep. It still kills the animated cursors.

7.102.101.228 dated 20 Nov 2009.

Where can I find original alps driver? I dont want to use Dell's one, I am woring on E6500

Try Toshiba's website, latest drivers, select trackpad from the dropdown menu. It's for XP through Win7, and I'm using it on a Dell Precision M4400 which has the same trackpad/most of the same hardware as the E6500. I personally do have the locking-up issue, but I hate Dell's version, so I just deal with it and go back into standby, resume again, and I have a trackpad again. This isn't so bad since Windows 7 sleeps and resumes so quickly.

Does anyone know how the HP Mini 311 has an ALPS trackpad and multitouch support? I imagine it's a hardware thing as well as a software one...any details?

For both XP and Windows 7 the driver versions are:

08/18/2009 7.105.1711.118 {cannot change sensitivity, however! this driver set seems to have limited configuration options...annoying.}

Best Solution for Dell Laptops

I think it's pretty clear that Dell's ALPS drivers for Windows 7 suck.

True there's a new GUI.

True the resume-from-standby bug is fixed.

However, there is no way to disable the touchpad while typing!

If you want better drivers than Dell has to offer and you want full functionality, go to the following website:

support.acer.com

Then choose the Windows 7 ALPS driver for the Aspire 5741G.

This was released on 3/9/2010 and has drivers dating from January 8, 2010. They are more recent and more fully-functional than any Toshiba or Dell drivers I have found so far. Sony also uses ALPS trackpads, but drivers are harder to find on their website, and the only recent ALPS drivers seem to be multi-touch-exclusive. Also, there is a system-verification-check on all of Sony's driver packages.

This driver is unbranded, which is nice.

You should uninstall your previous ALPS driver, reboot, then install this one with administrator privileges, then reboot.

If you are asked whether you want to run the driver files (such as apoint.exe, etc.) just uncheck "Always ask" and hit run for the 2 or 3 executables that require permissions. Note that you will never have to do this again after reboot!

This driver works well with all NON-multitouch ALPS trackpads, regardless of age. Note that the "disable trackpad while typing" option is not user-accessible in this driver, but it is permanently on, which I think is ideal. If you don't like this default, switch back to the Dell drivers. I also like that you can disable tapping on the TouchStick while typing. (this option is visible to the user if you have a TouchStick)

I guess it is also obvious that this driver works equally well with TouchStick and non-TouchStick touchpads. I have not yet tested it with multitouch pads, so I don't know if it will work, although the "Gestures" tab is there.

Note that if you try installing more recent ALPS drivers intended for multitouch pads, you will likely get a BSoD (blue-screen) and be forced to boot with "last known good configuration" then uninstall the drivers, then install these.
