NERD - Nhanced Extraction of Relevant Details

Windows 2000, XP, 2003, VISTA

UPDATES

  • 2007-XX-XX / v1.100:
    - TODO add W2K devcon for 2K (as W2K has problems with readout using the 2K3 version of devcon??)
    - TODO one file executable (7-zip self extract)
  • 2007-08-21 / v1.086:
    - added VISTA Final support
    - updated PCIDEVS.TXT from 612 to 640 (2007-05-16)
    - updated CHKCPU to v1.14 (2007-08-08)
  • 2006-12-07 / v1.083
    - added VISTA 6.0.5384 (RC?) support
    - added information for all PNP and PCI drivers installed
  • 2006-06-17 / v1.080 (Maintenance Release)
    - added output of Audio Service Information for modded TOSHiBA Virtual Sound (TVS.ini)
    - enhanced general reg query compatibility for weird Registry values (including "&", "whitespaces" etc.)
    - removed WMI PowerManagement Readout as it causes an XML error during commandline processing
    - removed Hardware Database Rescan (XP is hiding Intel's SMBUS Controller driver for reason; but it's going to be installed during the scan causing problems with SpeedFan)
    - some comments, head and text changes
  • 2006-06-12 / v1.075:
    - Teraphy updated MXM Checker (v1.11 / 2006-06-11)
    - Teraphy updated EDID Retrieval now featuring ViewSonic layout (v1.10 / 2006-06-11)
    - updated pcidevs.txt
    - minor NERD layout changes
  • 2006-04-19 / v1.071:
    - added 2 more Memory details and put all Memory details in a separate section
    - added check if oemlogo.bmp exist before try to temporaely rename it as it causes a disturbing error message shown
    - added two WMI commands to re-initialize performance libraries to the WMI repository
    - updated pcidevs.txt
  • 2006-04-02 / v1.070:
    - splitted Logfile: now LaptopVideo2Go Forum Registration info is a seperate file found in the same directory
    - added: output of existing PHANTOM DEVICE :)
    - added: more detailed DEVCON output for GPU and LCD
    - added: your hardware database is getting scanned before the actual extraction of details
    - added: temporary renaming of oemlogo.bmp as it is causing WMI to dramatically slow down while reading out CS in MISC part
  • 2006-03-25 / v1.065:
    - added: battery details
    - added: PCI32 graphical overview of the BUS subsystem
    - fixed: DXDIAG log bug when running NERD from certain HD locations
  • 2006-03-22:
There's a bug in NERD versions lower than 1.052 when run NERD.cmd from root drive or first level directory. It affects output of DXDIAG and other stuff.
As a workaround put the extracted files on your Desktop and start NERD.cmd (make sure the "files" directory is present).
    2006-03-18 / v1.052:
    - added NV_MXM to determine if MXM upgradeability is available (coded by Teraphy :P )
    - removed WMI_CPU & upgraded to CHKCPU v1.11
    - added a load of PCI/AGP device information with help of PCI32 v1.4
    - fixed LCD Screen Size logging
  • 2006-02-22 / v1.044:
    - merged updated v1.044 .CMD file to v1.041 package (so only 1 download now)
  • 2005-08-31 / v1.044:
    - added hint that INFO for the Forum Registration Process can be found at the bottom of the Logfile (thanks vegamanx )
  • 2005-08-24 / v1.043:
    - removed dump of the VBIOS as it differs with what NVFLASH dumps (thanks MAVKE )
    - corrected a typo, which prevented the listing of your LCD screen model
  • 2005-08-21 / v1.041:
    - BEDUMP.exe replaces NVBIOS.exe & NVEDID.exe
    - summarized all the info you need when registering at our forum (except internal LCD name). Look at the bottom of the LogFile for this info.
    - BIOS dumps with version info as filename
  • 2005-08-16 / v1.035:
    - added section of Information you will appreciate for the LaptopVideo2Go Registration process (thanks to the suggestion from one of our new members)
    - enhanced output to Logfile (Time related)
  • 2005-07-09 / v1.027 /146DLs:
    - enhanced output to Logfile (DXDIAG related)
  • 2005-07-08 / v1.020:
    - added DXDIAG
  • 2005-05-31 / v1.015:
    - made a change to quit NERD immediately after EDID readout
    - corrected 2K behaviour
    - made a change when files subdir is not found (error handling)
  • 2005-05-19: i made some effort and updated that post. Now NERD is officially available for everyone. The tools developed by Teraphy's and the old specs.bat are now merged to an all-in-one package (NERD).

DOWNLOAD

  • [NERD v1.086] (378.440 bytes)
NERD.cmd uses the following tools (all included in the package):
    - LV2GO_DIRT.exe: Display Information Retrieval Tool. Coded by Teraphy.
    - LV2GO_EDID.exe: Reads out EDID. Coded by Teraphy.
    - LV2GO_MXM.exe: Checks for MXM compatibilty. Coded by Teraphy.
    - DEVCON.exe: A MS file for reading out Device specifics.
    - CHKCPU.exe: Reads out verbose CPU info
    - PCI32.exe: Reads out loads of PCI/AGP device info
    - reg.exe: only needed for Windows 2000.
  • In order for a succesfull run of NERD.cmd these must be placed in a subdirectory called 'files'. Which actually is being realized by the default ZIP extraction process.

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Extract the downloaded file anywhere. Start "NERD.cmd" and read the short text. Press any key and wait until it is finished and have a look at the "LaptopVideo2Go_LogFile.txt". Then (ZIP and) attach it in the appropiate topic of the VideoBIOS section or where it was requested.
  • Do _not_ copy, paste and post the complete output. Attachment is the way to go :)
  • For an example of the information output, pls. have a look at the attached logfile in the next post.
  • usable with Windows 2000, XP and 2003
  • NOTE: NVEDID _can_ create a weird looking fullscreen window. Don't abort the process, although it can take a while until it finishes EDID readout.
  • thanks to Bill, hazart, sn0wl for testing

Thanks. Now a VISTA log would be even more helpful (nobody ever tested NERD with VISTA :) )

It's not NERD.EXE, it's NERD.CMD.

I wasn't clear enough in my first post: I ran the .CMD file and the screen directed me to "re-extract the NERD.zip and copy all 4 .exe files to the subdirectory you see below: "

"C:\Users\Jack\AppData\Local\Temp\Temp2_nerd_v1.086.zip\files"

My problem is locating the 4 .exe files it's referring to. When I open the "files" folder in the .zip folder, I see seven .exe files. :)

So which files am I mistaking? :)

You are right there are more than 4 .EXE files existant (as i added more information readout over time, but forgot to change that number).

The thing is -as shown above in your reply- you didn't extract the .ZIP to any location, but just opened the .ZIP and doubleclicked the NERD.cmd... which will bring no results and that's where my check jumps in :)

So the quickest and easiest way is to download the NERD, save it to the harddrive, open you explorer, rightclick the .ZIP file and select 'extract'. Done.

Great news! I followed the instructions in your last post, and it ran the program without the previous request.

Bad news! After 7 or 8 "Cancel or Allow" requests (Vista), the black screen with the title NERD asked to proceed. I pressed any key and got the following message:

Title: 16 bit MS DOS Subsystem

"This system does not support full screen mode. Choose "Close" to terminate the application."

After choosing "Ignore," my CPU usage went from ~5% to ~50% and stayed that way (with nothing happening) for 6 minutes before I manually closed the program.

FUN :)

I give up. Thanks for the help anyway.

That's VISTA :)

Anyways and nevertheless you now got a logfile in the same location where the NERD.cmd resides... which you can open and read :)

This last is highly relevant and should be noted on the NERD main page. I assumed it crapped out and did nothing until I happened to spot this by accident.

:)

Thanks for that information, though.

My US$.02 < ---- and worth every pfennig.

i'm using Vista SP1 and NERD dosen't work

at the final line in the cmd it said:

Your Operating System is not supported by this script, yet.

It's intended to use only with Windows 2000, XP or Server 2003.

Press ANY key to quit now and try again.

of course i quit and tried again and same thing happened again.

Vista was released as 6.0.6000, Vista SP1 is 6.0.6001

Edit the script and find:

ver|find "6.0.6000">NUL

if "%errorlevel%"=="0" set V_OS=vista&goto :OSDETAILS

then add the following two lines

ver|find "6.0.6001">NUL

if "%errorlevel%"=="0" set V_OS=vista&goto :OSDETAILS

It does not appear to support 64-bit vista either

"The program or feature "\??\C:\Users\<username here>\Desktop\nerd_v1.086\files\LV2GO_MXM.exe" cannot start or run due to incompatibility with 64-bit versions of Windows. Please contact the software vendor to ask if a 64-bit Windows compatible version is available"
