Cyberlink probably is giving you a red light on your driver because it's not WHQL. If that's the problem, 171.12 is WHQL, and you can use Anchel's install method from a few posts above yours: Then use the HAVE DISK method of installing drivers (Go to PC -> Properties -> Device Manager -> Graphics Adaptor -> Properties -> Update controller software ----> from there just choose that you will specify where the drivers are in and then select "Choose from a list of drivers" and finally USE DISK). Remember I built up to this and its not that straight forward. I went from 100s (official) to 156s to 167s. Then I started with the desktop drivers from 169s to 171. If I have a Go 7800 GTX I should only attempt to install drivers that have a desktop counterpart listed when using the disk method or can I use the latest 171.xx drivers even though my model isn't even close to list to choose from? cdx47 Posted February 18, 2008 Report Share Posted February 18, 2008 I personally use the desktop 8400 GS driver for my 8400m GS laptop. Im not sure its that straight forward though. When using the Have Disk method, I notice that the 8400 GS is mentioned 4 times with no details. When you actually look in the .inf file you will noticed that each one has a different dev and subys id. For me personally I have to use the one which is closest to my dev/subsys number. I suppose this makes sense. So in my case I always have to choose the 3rd 8400 GS down when using the Have Disk method. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

With so many Forceware versions raining in from all sides, one way to go is to check what NVidia says. I've just notice their "beta" driver page has just become "Advanced Driver Search" : it actually lists all drivers for a given series / card, giving the "NVidia recommended" "WHQL" "Beta" status for each. http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx?lang=en-us For 7 and 8 series on both XP and Vista, they still list 169.2x as reference, 163.75 as previous. No trace of any 17x forceware in the "beta" sections. That's telling. Jokes apart, every time I installed a beta forceware - and I have - I got consistently worse performance. I noticed you had tried a 167 notebook driver back in January ? what made you dump it ? I've been suffering so bad with the old 156.55s because of the dang WHQL issue just so I could continue to watch Blu-Ray, and they would not only constantly freeze up Vista, but the framerate was almost 30% lower than it is now in some games! I made a hopeless plea to Acer a couple of weeks ago, but this is WAY better. Thank you again so very much. Tried different playback software, drivers, prayer, begging, banging my head against a wall.... I've also got an Acer, the 5920G with an 8600m GS, which driver did you use to get it working with Bluray/HD-DVD playback? Also, what bluray drive did you get? Thank you very much :) Also tested with Crysis and the performance seems OK but not much improvement over 169.09 on my Toshiba X205-SLI4. I was trying everything on Vista64 to get HD playback working but nothing has helped. But the "have disk" method is simply PERFECT!!!!! Everything works now... The One Posted May 15, 2008 Report Share Posted May 15, 2008 HELLO ALL! After having a list of issues and troubles myself, I finally locked down the BEST driver for this card (INCLUDING SLI SUPPORT). Also, for some of you, if you experienced problems, this driver and method of installation also bypasses the BLU-RAY error that you get when you try and install a custom driver (instead of your original manufacture one), and you can't play BLU-RAY DVD'S. Here goes: Restart your laptop, keep pressing F8, until you come to the boot screen. Through the list of options, look for something like "DISABLE DRIVER CHECK PROTECTION." It will be something along those lines, you can't MISS IT, trust me. After pressing enter on that, Vista will boot up as usual. Download the "167.43 DRIVER FROM HTTP://WWW.LAPTOPVIDEO2GO.COM." (Click on any driver, scroll right to the bottom, and open the quick menu to go to "167 drivers....." Download the CORRECT one for your operating system. I use VISTA 64, so I downloaded that one. ALSO, download the "Modified INF" which is linked NEXT TO the download link for the driver itself. UNINSTALL YOUR CURRENT DRIVER, RESTART AND RUN "DRIVER CLEANER PRO" (DOWNLOAD if you do not have it, its FREE). After running it, it will clean any remaining files of your previous driver. NOW YOU ARE CLEAN AND READY TO INSTALL. NOW. After EXTRACTING THE DRIVER in your directory/folder, COPY AND PASTE the "modified INF" into that folder. RUN SETUP and install the NEW 167.43 driver. After finishing, it will restart. When you are back in windows. TRICKY PART: Once in windows with the NEW DRIVER, RIGHT-CLICK on my computer, go to properties, go to DEVICE MANAGER. Double click on DISPLAY ADAPTERS, and RIGHT-CLICK on your Graphics Card GPU. Choose UPDATE DRIVER SOFTWARE. Choose "BROWSE MY COMPUTER FOR DRIVER SOFTWARE." Choose "LET ME PICK FROM A LIST OF DEVICES." Choose "HAVE DISK." NOW EXTRACT THE 167.43 DRIVER INTO THE EXACT FOLDER YOU DID FIRST (This will extract the ORIGINAL INF which is needed). After doing this, CONTINUE WITH THE "HAVE DISK" stage above. Now in HAVE DISK, browse to where the ORIGINAL INF has been extracted (it's size should be 40-50kb). Choose it and click OPEN. NOTICE THAT THIS INF IS "DIGITALLY SIGNED." Now CHOOSE your graphics card in the list, and click on NEXT and FINISH the installation. WHEN FINISHED, GO INTO THE NVIDIA CONTROL PANEL, ENABLE SLI (IF YOU HAVE IT). FINISHED!! BLU-RAY DVD'S WORK!!! (I USE CYBERLINK POWER DVD 8), AND GUESS WHAT: I JUST GOT 11,000 POINTS IN 3D MARK 06 AT...... 1920 X 1200 (MAX RESOLUTION)!!!!!!! IN SLI MODE.......... WITH NO OVERCLOCKING! LET ME REPEAT: WITH NO OVERCLOCKING!!! THAT'S WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT! HOPE IT ALL WORKS FOR YOU GUYS! Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

The One Posted May 16, 2008 Report Share Posted May 16, 2008 They were at least a few hundred lower, for example, at DEFAULT in SLI MODE this is what I got: 175.63: 11,300 Marks 175.12: 11,400 Marks 169.28: 11,600 Marks 167.43: 12,100 Marks and over!! These are all STOCK CLOCKS scores, NO OVERCLOCKING DONE to the GPU! If you want the BEST graphics driver for your 8800M GTX (Single or SLI) and you want BLU-RAY DVD playback on your laptop (no incomptible driver errors, etc), TRUST ME, the method I explained above will help you achieve this! I understand that downloading signed drivers from nvidia and using the have disk method of installing should get them working again, but my videocard (9500m gs) is not listed.
