Latest Drivers for 8700 on Dell XPS M1730

I just got a Dell XPS M1730 with Nvidia 8700 GT dual cards.

I got about 5400 when I first ran 3DMark06. I used RivaTuner to OC the 8700 and got 6016.

I believe I'm having a problem with SLI and being enabled properly. I found another post

that mentioned turning off the Aegis card, which I will try.

What is the latest, stable driver I can use?

One the Dell Support Web Site, they have 174.13, which is a performance fix???, for the M1730.

I noticed a couple of posts that say 169.28 is the version to use for the 8700.

What problems would I run into trying to use a more current version?

I'll give that a try and see how I make out.

Out of curiosity, any reason why I wouldn't want to go to 174.93?

What is the difference between the various 17x ( 173, 174 and 175 ) drivers?

as far as i know 174.93 was a leaked beta with no release notes/logs.

just because it has a higher build number by 0.03 doesnt its a mobile sli driver :)

174.83 was the beta 8800MGTX Sli driver

then 174.90 was released and was made WHQL for sager laptops with 8800MGTX but it also supports your card and should come with sli profiles.

BTW a driver with a higher number doesnt mean its a better/ newer driver.

for example 175.16 is newer than 175.63.

thank nvidia for there version system

I just tried to install 174.90, but I got the following:

The NVIDIA setup

I tried to install the 174.90 driver, but I got the following notice:

The NVIDIA Setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will not exit.

Is there another way to install the updated driver instead of using setup.exe

in the same thread where you downloaded your driver, there should be a icon saying 'modded inf'

download that

and after you extracted your driver, put the modded inf into that folder and overwrite the oriignal.

read the quick start guide found on my sig.

I went to the download page for the 174.90 drivers, there there wasn't a download available for the modded inf.

There are a couple references further down the page, but non for the m1730.

I was able to manually update the driver for both 8700, but since I didn't use the installer, I lost the nvidia control panel icon on the taskbar.

But I can still access it from the desktop though.

I tried running 3DMark06 with different drivers and different OC settings for the 8700.

Thanfully I was finally able to get the cards to run in SLI after disabling the Ageia PhysX card first.

I tried different drivers and RivaTuner OC settings for the 8700, and here is what I got, running Windows XP ( it seems that running

Vista gets a higher score )

M1730 OC to 3.4GHz, Nvidia ( 625/1250/800 ) 174.31 Driver without SLI - 5461 3DMarks

M1730 OC to 3.4GHz, Nvidia ( 700/1400/900 ) 174.31 Driver without SLI - 6016 3DMarks

M1730 OC to 3.4GHz, Nvidia ( 725/1450/900 ) 174.31 Driver - 7901 3DMarks

M1730 OC to 3.4GHz, Nvidia ( 750/1500/800 ) 174.31 Driver - 7996 3DMarks

M1730 OC to 3.4GHz, Nvidia ( 750/1500/900 ) 174.90 Driver - 7883 3DMarks

I don't know if the last one was a fluke or if the card doesn't do well at those settings.

I will do a couple of tests with the Ageia PhysX card enabled to see if that helps or hinders any.

There is no modded info avail yet for these drivers. Might be good to actually check the page before you give advice. Just a thought.

Hi,

I'm running nvidia drivers v175.16 (using modded inf) on my DELL M1730 with dual N8700Ms

Every time I install the newest driver it retests the SLI settings.

I set them back (through NVIDIA Control Panel) - and it works.

At the moment I have 7800 at 3DMakk06.

I´M going to test the new 175.90 now.

Ive run 3Dmark06 on new drivers and get 8196 points!!!! before i have only +/- 4800 :) )))) so its nearly double .Great

hello, this is my first post here. It seems to be a great forum!

I also had problems with my SLi and the drivers until I installed the 175.16 driver.

I have a question for you. My 3Dmark06 score now is: 9186 this is the overall score (3video tests plus the CPU tests).

the test configuration was:

Benchmark
Version	1.1.0
Width	1280
Height	1024
Anti-Aliasing	None
Anti-Aliasing Quality	0
Texture Filtering	Optimal
Anisotropic Level	1
VS Profile	3_0
PS Profile	3_0
Force full precision	No
Disable HW shadow mapping	No
Disable post-processing	No
Force software vertex shader	No
Color mipmaps	No
Force software FP filtering	No
Repeat tests	Off
Fixed framerate	Off

So, is this a good result or should I try again with different benchmark configuration in order the get an appropriate score.

Thanks in advance

is depend what graphic cards you got.

for example i got Dell XPS M1730 with Nvidia Geforce 8700m GT 256Mb x2 sli and on 3Dmark06 (default settings) with 175.80 i make 8247 points. i have tried 177.39 drivers and they not work for me at all - comp coolers running high all time + i couldne enable my sli.

I have the same exact machine and I can't get those drivers to install correctly. I have followed the guides and every time I reboot after the install I have problems.

1.) My Control Panel is Gone.

2.) When I go to Device Manager its only showing one of my cards and it has a warning message.

Can you give me some advice on how you installed this on your M1730?

Thanks.

167.45 are the forceware drivers I'm using, I didn't try the higher 1 but these drivers seem fine, I get nearly 10000 3dmark with overclocking graphics only, 756 cpu and 1000 memory, I was surprised the memory runs that high but it does. The sli will crash running the graphics cpus at over 756. I love this laptop but with the 8700s I feel we are underpowered. I have to play crysis on medium because later levels are entense even with nearly 10000 3dmark06. I pray they release the next 8800 with physics biult in at a reasonable price for upgrade. :)

I never knew my laptop's card was supposed to be so good, thought it was always this bad but think I just need help on it.

Did a benchmark after installing 175.80 and it was 2106 which seems far too low (this is the 8700GT SLI).

One thing it might be could be my memory allocation? At the moment it looks like this but I have no idea how to change it:

Total available graphics memory 1631 MB

Dedicated graphics memory 256 MB

Dedicated system memory 0 MB

Shared system memory 1375 MB

Any suggestions would be great :) ty
