Toshiba owners look within

Hello guys,

As you may be aware there are quite a few Toshibas with display problems, ie black borders around the edge of the screen.

Now I'm trying to find out if there is a relationship between Compal produced laptops vs Toshiba made ones.

Toshiba uses Compal to make certain models in their line up.

The only way of knowing which is which (that I know of) is the power supply (adaptor).

15v Toshiba

19v Compal

Could you guys look at the power adaptor and have a look at the voltage output.

Then reply back here with:

Model number

Sub model number

Voltage output of power adaptor

and whether your laptop works with my or Teraphy's INFs.

If you have problems write down wether it's black border syndrome or the white screen @ logon, or any other probs.

Hopefully I can get a better idea of how to maybe fix problems or if my special Toshiba sections in my INFs are of any use at all.

Get to it,

Pieter.

Subsequently, the more detailed information the better.

A good slew of information can be gathered from the DirectX Diagnostic tool.

START -> RUN -> DXDIAG
Next "Save All Information".  Then either attach the text to your post or post the relevant information which is found under:

Hi Pieter!

Here's my laptop info:

Model number: Toshiba Satellite 2415

Sub model number: S205

Voltage output of power adaptor: DC15V---5A

I get the "black bar" syndrome on the right 1/2" side of my screen.

Let me know if you need any other info!

Thanks,

Tenstrum

Forgot to mention that I have the black bar with either yours or Teraphy's driver.

Cheers Tenstrum,

Have you tried my plain jane no frills (except all pages) v13-53.04 yet ?

See how you guys do with a Default setting INF.

Might just work (fingers crossed)

Keep those adaptors coming,

Pieter.

I don't have my laptop handy with me ATM, but just here to report about problems i am having with my new driver.

its a Toshiba 2430 p4 2.4 Geforce4 420GO 32mb. Now you can read about my dvd problem in the dvd topic.

The other probem is that when i logged into XP, screen goes blank for half a sec then it comes back.

I'll Check the AC input as soon as i get home.

The screen flashing when first booting is normal this is just the GPU scanning whats on the TV/Monitor out ports.

Guys, i've checked my lappy and its a 19v adapter.

It also seems that the MSCE 53.04 v13 drivers are running fune and dandy. I think.

DVD works perfect,

No black bars.

Only little irritation i get is when every startup i get a flash on the lcd. Just irritating... is there any way in which i can make it stop doing that?

So thus far,

Toshiba (15v) assembled machines :

2415-s205 with problems.

5205-s705 with NO problems.

Compal (19v) assembled machines :

2430-s??? with NO problems

Keep those results coming, if anything, anybody buying a Toshiba laptop will be able to have a look for models that actually work with drivers other than their original. My condolances to those with non cooperative laptops.

Pieter.

Tenstrum,

How about shearing your Make/Model/Submodel number etc, for reference.

Pieter,

53.04 w/13.01 INF. Still have the black bar issue.

My 420 GO BIOS ver. is 4.17.00.41.C7. Any issues with that?

I've "rolled back" to the 43.xx driver for now.

Thanks,

Tenstrum

note that ive just tried the winxpsp2 beta and the default microsoft drivers even do this. this is wild. in the past, the softedid (or whatever that was called) did the trick. i havent tried that yet this time around but i have a good feeling about it. just been lazy

thanks so much

im posting this on many threads so that it spreads easily. sorry if this is bad :)

with my tosh 1415-s105 (gf4go420 16mb) 15v, i used to be able to do the softedid mod and have a perfect screen. however, i tried the 20.xx series inf and it no longer works. im using 53.04mce with softedid mod (and tried without) and it is a nogo. damned blackbar

oh well. im telling everyone whos asking why i have a dead area that "im trying to save battery life" :)

Toshiba 6100, 420Go, 15v P/S, 1G memory.

Tried 53.04 MCE with 20.02 INF. Screen max is 1588x1200 instead of 1600x1200 (right 12 pixels are black). Appears that all of the 5x.xx drivers are still pulling the wrong display type for the Toshiba 1600x1200 LCD. Maybe 53.64 will be better?

I've got a Toshiba 2435-S255 (came with WinXP Home I've upgraded it to WinXP Pro so in a sense, it's a 2435-S256)

2.4GHz P4

512MB DDR RAM

40GB HD

Geforce 4 420Go

19V Power Supply

I first started using both your guys drivers back around the 40.XX series.

The only problem's I ever suffered where the resume from Standby issue where my LCD screen remains blank.

I haven't ever seen any black or white bars across my screen.

The best driver to date for me have been the 52.16.

The only issue I had with them was that games would start to load then I would see my desktop again. But the game didn't crash, it was stuck in the taskbar. This was only after a fresh boot up too. Sending my laptop into Standby or HIbernate and resuming would fix this problem, till my next reboot of-course. :)

You guys are doing an awsome job considering what you have to work with.

I'm going to try the latest drivers 56.55 and if I don't like how those work, I may go and to try the 44.68 for maximum speed, but I like the newer NView. So I may ultimatly go back to the 52.16.

Hmmm... choices choices. 8) :)

Using Alt-TAB 1 time should resolve this "issue", i think or leftclick on the element in the taskbar may bring up the fullscreen game.

Thanks for the suggestion dontknow, but believe me, I tried everything when this problem first reared it's head.

The only solution that I found, at-least for me, was to put the system into Standby (since it's quicker than Hibernate) and resume then things work fine.

Since I use Standby and even Hibernate more often than I "Turn Off" my laptop, it works out pretty good for me.

This morning, I've gone back to 52.16, 56.55 are, in my opinion not ready for prime time, at-least not on my laptop.

Games were having even more trouble staying in focus, and the System Tray NVidia icon lost all functions except "About" and the "Nview Properties".

The unistall didn't even remove all the files.

I had tried 53.04, but those would not resume properly, blank screen.

Personally, I believe that it has come to the point that anyone with a pre Geforce FX type GPU should probably stay with what ever driver is working best for them. It will probably be that any new drivers will only benifit users of DX9 compliant GPU's. And possibly even hamper those without.

This is my opinion and only speculation. I may very easily be proven' wrong. :)

BTW, on the whole power supply thing. Are you guys sure it's as simple as what voltage was used to determine the actuall manufacturer?

Mine has the 19V PSU and I could understand a different manufacturer since mine is kinda a budget machine. But my dad has one of the new fancy P25-S607's, you know, P4 2.8GHz HT, 512 DDR, 60GB, 17" wide aspect ratio LCD, Geforce FX 5200Go, built in WiFi, 19V power supply.

You would think that Toshiba would be making that one, but who nows.

Same laptop with same black bar with 53 and 56 series drivers. Works fine on older drivers though.

Very much the same situation as PeteSL (except he owns the top SP6100).

Toshiba SP6100

Model No. PS610E-00R6M-IT

15V power supply

P4M 1.6GHz

512Mb

NVIDIA GeForce4 420Go 32Mb 1024x768 (Bios 4.17.00.41.C7)

W2000SP4 (5.00.2195)

If my memory serves me, last year I tried all 5x.xx, in particular 53.03 with the latest inf for that driver both from Pieter and Teraphy. All had the " black bar on right side" problem.

Finally, on December 18th 2003 I went back to detonator 45.33 + INF 45.24 by Teraphy: nView working, TV out not working. No further tests from that date; I have not tried 53.04.

Toshiba satellite 1415-s173 here with a 15V power supply, and geforce4 420 go.

I've had a black bar on the right side of the screen with every 5x.xx series driver that I've tried. I've tried almost every version that I could find, but I know for a fact that I installed and had no luck with: 52.16, 53.03, and 56.67

I normally use 45.23. The only problem I have with that version is my mouse cursor and occasionally the LCD not reappearing after an LCD power down. When this happens, the TV output still works and I have to reboot.

Videomad,

Have you tried 47.12, what could possibly be the last 4x.xx driver ?

Pieter.

Hi,

I'm french user thus sorry for my english :)

I have a Toshiba Satellite 2410-303 with GeForce4 420Go 32M. My power supply is a 15V.

I tested some version of nvidia drivers with modified .inf . Only version 43.03 does not reveal to me the screen with the black band on the right.

I don't want to install unofficial version of nvidia drivers.

I hope it's help you to find the problem.

Thanks for your works.
