Windows 7 Beta Goes Public

If you're interested, aren't one of the few MS TechNet subscribers already involved, or haven't just torrented it or something, then...

Microsoft has now released Windows 7 Beta 1 to the general public.

Both 32-bit and 64-bit versions are available.

However it's only available to the first 2.5 million people who download it.

Note that the beta 1 expires on 1 August 2009.

To learn more about the beta see this Windows 7 Beta FAQ:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7....aspx

You'll probably want this as well:

"Microsoft has released an update for Windows 7 Beta 1, resolving several issues with media playback, including potential MP3 corruption"

64 bit:

Should be available, but the server was overloaded. Will re-appear there soon apparently.

EDIT:

I see the message has changed again to:

"Thanks for your interest in the Windows 7 Beta. The volume has been phenomenal -- we’re in the process of adding more servers to handle the demand. We’re sorry for the delay and we’ll re-post the Beta as soon as we can ensure a quality download experience."

I've read that it's likely they will still make the download available until near the end of the trial, and those who get it after the 2.5 million who have a license for the whole trial, will still be able to run it under the operating system's 30-day trial.

No proper license if doing it that way though?

The intended distribution method gives an icon on the desktop to resume the download if stopped.

If you use those direct links you will still have to obtain a beta key through the main beta site once it becomes available again.

More from Microsoft on the distribution problems:

"Due to very heavy traffic we?re seeing as a result of interest in the Windows 7 Beta, we are adding some additional infrastructure support to the Microsoft.com properties before we post the public beta. We want to ensure customers have the best possible experience when downloading the beta, and I?ll be posting here again soon once the beta goes live. Stay tuned! We are excited that you are excited!"

Using it at the moment. There was a NVIDIA driver update for my video card. It seems to be 179.29.

I reccomend using a download manager like Internet Download Manager(use google for a free trial) because the connection with microsoft servers is verry poor. At the middle before using a download manager I lost connection and I had to start over.

I have it installed on the laptop atm. Seems to be running fine. Technically it should since its just a basic Vista revamp to the way it shoulda been released to begin with. The only issue Ive had with it so far is the new desktop background slide show. If I select all images it just goes black and doesnt work. So far so good though with a boot up ram usage of 600ish

There IS an option in Windows 7 where you can change back the taskbar to Vista style... but I haven't cared to look.

That could've saved you a lot of trouble reinstalling Vista.

  • 3 weeks later...
  • 2 months later...

Public release candidate is coming May 5th and the beta keys should still work fine on it.
