cpax didn't work because the old cpad apps wouldn't launch. I got the display allowing me to select the old cpad apps when I hit the center button, but nothing happened when I hit the buttons. I went through each one in the configuration and made sure that they were pointing to the correct folder and app, but still nothing. I chose the hybrid drivers option and was using 8.06.

I emailed the cpad drivers and the registry patch to Bill who posted his email address above.

You are probably doing something wrong. Make sure you restarted after installation and make make sure correct SynTPEnh.exe is running in background. If you are unsure just kill SynTpEnh.exe and the one with similiar name next to it, restart cPax and try again.

This is important for us because if there is some kind of incompatibility we should fix it.

Thanks for the file.

Well, I haven't been on the forum in a long time because my laptop stopped functioning correctly. After a few minutes of running the machine, the pixels started freaking out. I got a lot of distortion and artifacts on the screen. Eventually, the resolution would drop to 640x480 and 4bit color. I got an error that said something like my Nvidia graphics adapter has ceased to function properly.

I thought perhaps it was heat but running Speedfan and keeping the blower on had little effect and even showed that the problem occured even when the temperatures were well within limits, even cool. It would be fine if I shut down (or crashed) and restarted after a few minutes. But of course a few minutes later the problem came back.

I've got a Toshiba Satellite 5105-S701 with a nVidia Geforce4 440 Go with 64MB. I've never experienced a problem like this in all the years I've had the machine. I did have the card overclocked but not by a crazy amount. I reset the clock frequencies to their default values and the problem persisted.

Is it fried? Can it be fixed? Dust? I have no idea. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I don't think you can replace the card without replacing the whole motherboard. Anyway, I couldn't find info on a problem like this anywhere else in the forum, perhaps I just didn't look hard enough. Thanks everyone!

Sorry for you - and we were just waiting for your animations :)

Anyway, I assume you tried a fresh install, right?

Yes I have. Sorry about those animations. I just got a piece of hardware that will let me access my files on my Toshiba so maybe I can get them out of there.

Ok, i have had my s703 for like 3 years now and is still kinda awesome, i got 768 ram, in it now, but recently its been on a fritz. When i play DVDs they play for like 5 mins they get extremely choppy, when i look at the task manager, as soon as it gets choppy the cpu is at 100%. Also some games that i play, i am well beyond the minimum requirements, and it most times i am at the recomended, but games run like total shyte. I use the 7760 drivers, and i ran XPTUNE. This is very fustrating since i am stranded in Iraq for the army and i DEPEND on my laptop. What can i do ? BTW i am also unning the latest bios from Tosh

Hi I have the Canadian version of almost that same laptop (same graphics card anyway). I recently tried out the 77.xx series of drivers, comparing them to the earlier 71.89 (which I had been using for many months) and even older 67.66 driver.

I used 3dmark2001 to compare results, and tested it also with various games etc. 77.xx driver was 4x-5x slower than the 67.66 driver, and the 71.89 was slower by 10 or 20% than the 67.66 driver. So, I have at least temporarily gone back to 67.66. Even though that driver corrupts graphics at 1600x1200 in GTA San Andreas (whereas 71.89 did not), performance is much better and graphic quality okay at lower resultion anyway.

Another thing to do is when you change drivers (especially downwards), make sure you check whether ghost/non-present MONITOR drivers remain in the device manager, and if so, delete them. oTHERWISE, they create annoying conflicts that cause crashes etc. For details see here:

http://www.tech-recipes.com/windows_instal...on_tips504.html.

but warning! I only recently discovered this fix and don't know what side effects it might have!

Another thing is if you are using WinDVD 4 which came pre-.installed on the system, i recommend turning off hardware acceleration in WinDVD 4. quality of playback in that programme is much better using software rathe than hardware support.

With 67.66, on 1024x768, fx quality low, 6 bars draw distance, no anti-aliasing, it stays at 25 fps most of time, dropping from time to time. Turning up the effects a notch drops about 5 fps.

if heatwaves or rain starts, things can really slow down. So, to play this game on our hardware, I had to lower my expectations of quality a lot...

i don't think going to Pro will help. It only adds more stuff running on your system, which would likely just slow it down more.

Options are to wipe the thing clean and use the restore disks from toshiba. but then you have to reinstall everything, backup all docs and saved games etc. first and then put them back on later. a real hassle.

If that is too much hassle or you dont have the restore CD with you, try this:

completely get rid of all existing drivers on your system with this:

>(follow instructions closely but you probably dont need to run the cab cleaner)

http://www.drivercleaner.net/

I wonder whether you are running at the right resolution, for your model number it should be 1600x1200, right?

install the 67.66 driver with the modified .inf. (open the .inf file and change maposd3 to 2 instead of 3 first)

check for spyware and other crap with adaware and spybot, plus run a full virus scan. get rid of any of that crap.

good luck!

I am getting some serius heat issues with my laptop, its hot as hell when on my laptop and when on something. I noticed that when i left my laptop running during the day, it would have awful playback at night when i try to watch dvds, but when i freshly turned it on and it was cool it would play awesome. I am assuming that there is positive correlation between s***ty playback and high heat. I was thinking if investing in one of those cooling pads that targus makes or even cleaning my fans and air ducts, since i am in iraq there is tons of dust.

You can use any driver in combination with Pieter's mobile INF. (see FAQs for installation description.)

OffTopic:

I'm using a new version of Toshiba PowerSaver (v7.05.07PR), but the brightness bug is still existant. They added a few new files for CD/DVD Powersaving and updated the ControlPanel a bit (at least it looks a bit different than what i remember from the old version).

Hi guys, here's the story...

About 2 months ago I decided to take my 5205-s505 to the Toshiba Service Center because it had the following problem: the cooling ven was running almost all the time and the hot air flow was weak and very very hot. The guy there told me that the radiator needs to be cleaned. He cleaned it, but now the cooling vent is running almost all the time and the air flow is slow again (right after cleaning the air flow increased its velocity noticeably). What the *** is the problem? The ambient temp in the room is not high, the laptop is on flat surface... I was using it for 2 years before that without any problems and now that.... I don't want to give money for cleaning the radiator every 2 months....

Any suggestions and comments?

Thanks

v7.05.07PR didn't work here (maybe I should uninstall previous one first then install new one?). Do you think those new powersaving things affect our models?

i installed it right over my old PowerSaver.

The new files i refered to is a ODD=Optical Disk Drive .REG file. Also another one which i forgot and which gets copied to system32.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Toshiba\ODD Power Saver]

"ODDPowerState"=dword:00000001

"ODDAutoOffTime"=dword:00000000

"ODDAutoOffControl"=dword:000000FF
