Graphics card not detected after reboot

Hi,

I haven't posted in a while since the black bar fixer came out and I figured out that my Direct 3D apps crashing to the taskbar was do to a startup program called 00THotKey - the Toshiba utility that enables the media player controls on the front of the computer.

In any case, I have a new problem and am stumped. For some reason all of the newer drivers (beyond the 5x.xx series) work perfect after clean install and initial reboot. However, after the second and subsequent reboots, the computer seems to be using a standard VGA driver. That is to say:

1. It is slow as heck

2. It won't let me change into 32 bit colors at the highest resolution

3. If I go to Diplay Prop./ Settings / Advanced, the GeForce tab is no longer there

4. If I check Diplay Prop. / Settings / Adapter / Driver / Details it only lists question marks for the driver and says it is an unknown driver. However, if I go to Device Manager, Display adapters it is listed correctly (GeForce4 440GO) and the properties there say the driver is working properly and detects the correct files and versions.

I have tried adding in "HKR,, DevicesConnected, %REG_DWORD%, 257" which is in the inf of the original driver that came with the computer to try to force detection of the displays without success.

Earlier drivers do not have this problem. Upgrading the original driver with a new one without uninstalling first didn't make a difference either.

I'm not sure where to go from here - any other bright ideas? I'm trying to get 71.84 to work with Theraphy's black bar fixer inf.

Thanks Craig Corp for this hint i tried to remember the reason for the minimize to Taskbar problem and what is responsible for it, i think it was 2 weeks ago, but i could not find for the heck of it the correct thread.

Concerning your problem iw ould suggest the following procedure as the described problem sounds for me liek a messed up NV driver installation:

1. apply this enhancement for viewing pahontom devices: http://forums.laptopvideo2go.com/index.php?showtopic=646

2. Uninstall the current NVIDIA driver

3. Before the Reboot make sure you only have one Hardware Profile active

4. Reboot in Safe Boot

5. Open up the deviceManager and remove all "phantom devices"

(6. Also in Safe Mode remove all remnants of NV*.dll/help files and stuff or use a driver cleaner)

-> then reboot again to normal XP mode and install 71.84 with the BlackBar fix

Hope for the best

Perfect!

You gave the perfect advice. It turns out I had seven phantom copies of NVidia MultiView installed as display drivers. I removed them, reinstalled and now everything appears to be working great with 71.84, even after several reboots :)

Also, as to the the crash to taskbar issue, the original thread was about needing to block a Toshiba program called EZ button that controlled the internet and toshiba property buttons near the screen. I did not have that program on my model, but the 00THotKey utility was the culprit as mentioned above.

My great thanks once again to every one at LaptopVideo2Go. Everyone here has been quick, dedicated and wonderful at helping with these strange nVidia / Toshiba laptop quirks. You guys are awesome :)
