Alternative way to get rid of the W R O N G  M A C H I N E error message

thanks to Guest Christian

You do not need to download anything, instead do this:

  1. Insert your cd.
  2. Boot system using cd (here is where you will get the W R O N G M A C H I N E error).
  3. Change to the drive letter of the cd... mine was q: yours may be something else.
  4. Go to the 'base' folder by typing "cd base" and press enter.
  5. Type "os.bat" and this will start the ghosting process.

Your system should now be ghosting your computer to factory settings :)

The most recent build (v1.0 build 60303, dated 2006-03-03) can be downloaded HERE (it includes ALL updates for the models listed in the DESCRIPTION section of this post)

DESCRIPTION

This utility must be used whenever the system board is replaced on any of the applicable models listed below and should be used instead of the DMI Write tool that is contained in the Toshiba Test and Diagnostics for the specific model. It will eliminate the "Wrong machine" messages when you try to restore the factory software image from the Config Builder CD or PIRAD CD/DVD. This tool will restore the "Manufacturer" and "Model" DMI values (strings) on supported platforms. Restoring these DMI strings will eliminate the "Wrong machine" error when you try to restore your factory software from the restore CDs/DVD.

It applies to these models:

Libretto 100CT, 110CT, 50CT, 70CT

Portege 300CT, 3010CT, 3025CT, 3110CT, 3015CT, 320CT, 3480CT, 7010CT, 7140CT, M205-S809, M200, R100, 2010, 4010, 2000, 4005, 4000, 3490CT, 3020CT, M205-S810, 7220CTe, 7200CTe, 7200CT, 7020CT, 7000CT, 3440CT

If you want to apply the utility, I suggest you back up your original DMI settings first using DMICFG's Save DMI function. So if something goes wrong, you will be able to restore it.

DMICFG.exe can only be run in DOS real-mode.

This util is not able to handle the BIOS of the Toshiba 5205 series, but it ran on my Desktop with AWARD BIOS. Huge possibilities to alter the DMI information stored in the BIOS :) . It reminds me of the days when i modded ABIT KT7A BIOS mith 'modbin' & 'cbrom' and changed the EPA logo to a custom one :)

Btw i just used TOSHiBA DMI update utitility, but it shows only the 5200-Sxxx series for me, and choosing it results in still showing W R O N G M A C H I N E in big old DOS letters :P

Desktop Managment Interface. Applications can use DMI to identify/readout certain information of your PC or laptop. The description for what this update does you can find in the first post.

The important thing is that Toshiba recovery CDs/DVDs rely on certain DMI info, if they are incorrect you cannot use them.

I have a Toshiba Equium 8000M desktop. I am trying to use my restore CD's but I get the Wrong Machine error when I try to use them. Nothing has changed on this computer except that I had upgraded it to Windows XP from 2000 a few weeks ago. It now constantly reboots (must not like XP) so I wanted to go back to it's original state. I see there is a DMI utility for laptops but can't find anything for Desktops. Do you know where I can find one?

Hi, currently Toshiba doesn't provide a DMI Update tool for Equium series. So i suggested you get in contact with Toshiba Support and request it.

Here's the real deal:

You do not need to download anything, instead do this:

1. insert your cd

2. boot system using cd (here is where you will get the WRONG MACHINE ERROR)

3. change to the drive letter of the cd... mine was q: yours may be something else

4. go to the 'base' folder by typing "cd base" and press enter

5. type "os.bat" and this will start the ghosting process

6. your system should now be ghosting your computer to factory settings

:P :) :P

Thanks for sharing :) Can anybody affected from the WRONG MACHINE issue confirm or share his experience with this procedure? Nevertheless i think it's safe and can add this to the first post.

Hi,

One of my friends wants to sell his Toshiba Laptop 1110

He wanted to put it back to factory default using the 2 original Cd's but they seem badly scratched.

Is there an easy way to replace them ?

Is it downloadable?

Thank you in advance.

I know of no place where to download. Try calling Toshiba Support and let them send you a set of Disks.

Yes this does appear to work. I had to search through a few sites before I found this site.

I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro 6100 with XP and this is what I did:

1. Pop in the CD.

2. Press F12 immediately upon seeing the Toshiba logo.

3. Select the CD to boot to CD.

4. It will prompt you to continue or quit, press F1 to continue.

5. It will give you the "Wrong Machine" error.

6. Type Q: at the DOS prompt to change to the Q: drive (a RAM drive setup by batch file).

7. Type cd\base to change to the base directory.

8. Type os (or os.bat) and press Enter. This will start ghosting the image to the computer.

9. When it is done with disc 1 it will prompt for disc 2 and then disc 3.

10. When it is done, eject the disk and press the key it says to continue.

11. It should reboot into the setup for XP.

Unfortunatly I have been dealing with the same issue since about may 28th on a 5105-s701, and I have also found the following:

The final method discussed is for the following Toshiba models:

Satellite 5005-S504, 5005-S507, 5005-S508, 5105-S607, 5105-S608, 5105-S501, 5105-S701, 5105-S502, 5105-S702, 5105-S901, 5205-S503, 5205-S703, 5205-S504, and 5205-S704

These are "legacy-free" models, and they do not incorporate a BIOS Setup program in the motherboard ROM. The only way to run BIOS Setup is using a Windows-based BIOS Setup utility called HWSetup. The HWSetup utility comes preinstalled on these Toshiba models, and it is also contained in the Toshiba Utilities package for these models, which can be downloaded from the Toshiba support Web site. To run HWSetup, open the Control Panel and double-click the HWSetup program. HWSetup provides a graphical front end for modifying BIOS settings. Note that if you change any settings, you may be required to restart the system.

//??? this is already mentioned in the first post.

RE: The Toshiba Satellite 5105-S701

I couldn't figure out what to modify the BIOS settings to. Also I couldn't figure out how to start the ghosting. I am also having trouble connecting to the internet to download the Toshiba Utilities packages for this model. Originally, I solved the problem by purchasing a new computer -- it was time anyway, but I sure enough did not opt to purchase another Toshiba. Though still being hard headed, I am still wanting to fix this one.

Any help will be appreciated. Toshiba sure wasn't any. This is the first site where I have found any info.
