Here are the scores I got on 3d Mark '01 SE and 03 using the StarStorm e(X)treme speed extra (Q)uality modded INF on my Toshiba Satellite M30 model M30-UU9.

'01 SE: 6701

'03: 1279

Ok after a bit of tinkering and tweaking (mainly turning off v-sync, AA and Anistropic filtering) I've gotten some new scores to post.

Same Driver/INF as the last.

2001 SE: 6824

2003: 1327

gonna try tweaking it some more, maybe overclock a bit just to see what I can see.

Alright I figure I have it running pretty slick now, with a very minimal temperature increase. I'm using the StarStorm e(X)treme speed extra (Q)uality modded INF and I have the 5200 overclocked to 230/470 with the v-sync, anistropic filtering and Anti Aliasing turned off.

Voila:

2001 SE(230/470):7633

2003(230/470): 1510

Here is the score of the default set up (right out of the box) for a M30-UU9.

2001 SE: 6606

2003: 1264

(I hear you can clock it much higher and it will remain stable with the default INF/Driver. Not sure about the temperature though)

This is a fairly nice increase in performance.

:)

Nice research and progress there! Do you know what version number those drivers are?

Thanks!

I suggest trying a driver other than Starstorm's. With FX cards, the SS drivers tend to reduce performance a bit. Nvidia 53.03 drivers are very fast and stable. I also like 53.81 and 56.72. As regards temperature, the 5200 has no problem there, assuming Toshiba didn't skimp on cooling. With my Dell Inspiron, my 5200 would overclock at 248/499 with zero problems and peak temps of 80ish. I used those clocks for months. (I recently changed out the card for an FX Go5650!) I doubt all 5200s will clock that high reliably, but IMO, temperature is not a problem. With 53.0x drivers, I reached just past 8000 3D2001se marks.

I decided to mess around with my direct 3d settings some more and increased the maximum system memory for PCI mode textures to 255MB. I'm still using the same drivers as before with the 5200 overclocked to 230/470.

2001 SE: 7683

2003: 1515

I'm not sure if this tweak would translate well when running a game, but it increased the benchmark scores by a little.

You have my Go5200 beat by quite a bit, so those are nice numbers!

Guest, he's using an 8600 which offered both models of GPU. (Unless you're asking about the actual switching procedure, which isn't difficult.)

well yeah actually how can i switch my 5200 with a 5650? i guess ebay has the fx go cards or will nvidia mail order them? can i take open my laptop withotu voiding the warranty? even then is the process that simple?

I just benchmarked

3DMARK2001 SE Pro 1600x1200X32, 32bit textures, NoAA.

45.86 Dell INF - 2935

53.90 Larry's INF - 3036

56.54 Larry's INF - 3048

61.12 Larry's INF - 3056

Note you should test at the same settings if you want to compare. You can get larry's inf from the utilities page. I did 1600x1200 because that is what I play my games at and I wanted to see the real FPS.

Of course I wouldnt be suprised if the 3Dmark 03 scores go down instead of up, but it means that DX8 performance is better. I think I'll stick with the 61.12 and its cool "NVIDIA Laptop Display" on my right click menu!

Citrixcl, nobody makes an FX 5650 that fits into our 5150s. Our only hope is that a third party manufaturer will start offering them (or even something faster) for the 5150 and other laptops that don't have a soldered-in GPU.

61.12 Pieter - 3056

The scores of Larry and Pieter look the same, which is not surprising. It seems to be very difficult to get more frames through tweaking the inf.

nevertheless bigup to Larry of course who has a working alternative for 5150

i dont understand how you make those scores.

i have a i5150 3.0ghz with a 32mb GO5200 and making 4450 points in 3dmark2001se with a 6.1.1.2 driver

what im missing here, the 32mb memory? sounds weird to me though.

anway, would you know how much more power ill get by upgrading to 64mb or maybe ATI9000 64mb (which ever is fastest) ?

thx in advance

Yes, Guest, it's your card. I started with the same 32MB card and had scores very similar to yours.

I upgraded to the 64MB card and immediately jumped to scores in the upper 6K range. The price at the time was only US $84, so the upgrade was well worth it.

From what I've seen, the benchmark scores are pretty similar between the ATI and nVidia cards. However, the FX Go5200 is fully DX9 compliant while the ATI isn't, which should delay it's becoming obsolete a little longer.

well we both know those 2 card suck so im not sure ill put another cent into this notebook after all, im pretty pissed about not being able to really upgrade this s***. and dell is like "uh oh just buy our new inspiron xps it comes with upgradeable gfx and a ati 9700" god knows ill never buy a pc from dell...

do you know about the issues when upgrading a i5150 with a ati9700?

dosent it fit on the board?

maybe there is no room for it or you cant close the pc again

maybe a heat problem?

any idea ?

thx in advance

Two things... It's the wrong shape, and it requires a fan that the 5150 doesn't have space or a connector for.

Hind site can be a cruel thing, if only we knew then what we know now.

Unless your a gaming freak, the 32MB g5200 will do just fine.

You won't surf or type any faster with 64MB, spreadsheets, powerpoint presentations will still work just as fast.

If you play games alot then by all means upgrade, as it will make a difference getting the extra 32MB, but only modern games, anything older than DX7 games won't benefit from the extra memory.

Enjoy,

Pieter.
