johnequickiii
I have just recently installed a Geforce FX Go5200 64MB card in my Inspiron 5150 in place of a Geforce FX Go5200 32MB card. For some reason, no matter what driver I install for it, it seems to cut about 2-3 inches off of the right side of my screen and stretch the bottom of the screen about the same distance past the bottom. No matter what I do, or what settings I tried to change, I couldn't fix this. I also couldn't move the mouse past the black bar on the right side of the screen. After I'd install the drivers, all I had to do is go to the Display Settings and change anything, and that would happen to the screen, but it always fixed right after I uninstalled them. Please tell me that someone has either encountered this problem or atleast heard of it, and can help me fix it. I went to Dell and downloaded the drivers from there, (although they were the ones for the 32MB card), went to Nvidia and tried a few of their drivers, and even got the specialized drivers from 2 different sites, with no luck at all. ®®®
specialized drivers from 2 different sites :) :) The only site which offers a specialized INF for Laptops is us :P All others use our INF (officially or unofficially) as basis for their modding skills as seen at Guru3D, TweaksRUs, OMEGA, NGO etc. etc. What is the name of your LCD? Fabrice Roux
What is the name of your LCD? You have to be a uber geek to give a name to your LCD... *runs home laughing*
johnequickiii
Not quite sure what you mean by the name of my LCD. It's just the LCD on my laptop. I know that you can use the 64MB Geforce FX Go5200, but it just refuses to present itself properly on my screen. ; ;
Fabrice Roux
Run the NERD tool (look in René aka ®®® signature) and post the large resulting file. This will give René all the information about your screen "name" (manufacturer and ID).

johnequickiii
Is this normal that you use 1024x768 as working resolution? Or is it just a side effect of switching graphic cards? Normal. It's the max resolution I can get with the 32MB card, and seems to actually more closely match my displays size. (Whatever the LCD size is on an Inspiron 5150.) What's strange is... During the test, when it switched to fullscreen, it displayed on the ENTIRE screen, not just the portion that shows in Windows. It's really wierd. If this display was actually a monitor, I could fix the problem with the controls on the monitor.
Fabrice Roux
*clearing voice* I'm not a 5150 expert but I believed that it came with a 15" LCD screen available in 2 flavors.... 1400x1050 and 1600x1200. Given the NERD report: LCD Resolution : 1600 x 1200 pixels (native) Even the driver is reporting it: - Optimal : 1600 x 1200 x 60 Hz - Largest : 1600 x 1200 x 60 Hz So start by using the LCD native resolution... then come back for more information. ps: you can fit a 1600x1200 image on a 32Mb since the image would weight in the 6Mb. johnequickiii
Well... I have done that. I have actually tried every resolution setting from highest to lowest, including that one. I've played with every setting I could possible find, to no avail. I know. This is a stumper, huh? The guy I bought this card off of has already sent me another of the same, in hopes that it is just that the card is bad and not something else. ®®®
Before the change of the card you had 1024x768 as native resolution...after change of your graphic card (!)it rises to 1600x1200... using the same LCD :) Do you have by chance accidentically activated the secondary output (and made it primary)? Try entering the NVIDIA COntrol Panel and set it to "Single Display" only. Then try changing the resolution to 1600x1200.
johnequickiii
I think I figured it out. I feel stupid too. lol The Inspiron 5150 shipped with different screen sizes, and different native resolutions. This card must be from one of the ones with the slightly different screen size. What do you think?
johnequickiii
I have the same exact settings that I have with the 32MB card. I even went so far as to not uninstall the drivers from the 32MB card when I installed the 64MB card and nothing changed. Dammit... I just want to get this to work. o,O; Watch, it'll be something trivial and stupid that's doing it too. Usually is though, but still. lol You think doing a Remote Assistance request with one of you may help if I install the 64MB card before I do it? And do you think that someone on a remote connection to me would see the problem I'm having with my display?
Fabrice Roux
The Inspiron 5150 shipped with different screen sizes, and different native resolutions. This card must be from one of the ones with the slightly different screen size. What do you think? The max resolution is not hardwired in the graphic card... the screen and the graphic card communicate. Most of the issues that you encounter are either at driver or screen level. (assuming the 2 elements are correctly connected)
johnequickiii
Here's some more info that may help out in figuring this out. I am looking around in the NVIDIA GeForce Go5200 menu, and I'm in the Digital Flat Panel settings area. Now when I modify the settings in this section on the 64MB card, (between Display Adapter Scaling, Centered Output, and Fixed Aspect Ratio Scaling), it actually makes changes on my screen. I changed between those three settings on the 32MB card, and it doesn't do anything on my screen at all, not even a hint of attempting to make a change. Does that maybe have something to do with it? Maybe the 64MB card is attempting to see my display as a Digital Flat Panel?
Fabrice Roux
I want to say that it seems that your 32Mb card behaves strangely. I'm trying to find more information on your laptop... especially the screen native resolution.

I have successfully changed the driver to 77.77 using this incredibly helpful site (seriously) but when I did the screen did this exact same thing. I notice that one of the tweaks offered here is to control a toshiba "black bar" problem. Have you thought of using that tweak? Assuming you already have the driver installed on your unit, you could download the driver again and update it with the tweak. Then update the driver with the altered driver (same ##.##) and see if it will do the trick. I'm monkeying around with this now and I'll check in with you later. This marks the twelfth hour I have put into the project of updating my driver and I'm now on a mission from God.

No word of any other laptop manufacturer. In other words: this will NEVER work.
LSudlow
Everyone, this looks to me like an EDID problem, where either the screen isn't reporting resolutions correctly, or the card/driver isn't reading them correctly. If you aren't already using my custom inf for the 5150/5160, you can find it at: http://forums.laptopvideo2go.com/index.php?showtopic=7755 It works for most 5150/5160 users, but if it the problem persists you can look for the following three lines, toggle the values, and reinstall. HKR,, EnableDynamicEdidMode, %REG_DWORD%, 1 HKR,, nvEDIDPruning, %REG_DWORD%, 1 HKR,, SoftEDIDs, %REG_DWORD%, 1 One of them may do the trick. The resolution 1280 x 854 creates an issue, I think. My other reference on search threads is for this driver with 52.16 and 53.13 possible. 77.77 can work but creates impossible black bar. I'll let you know if I have success.
johnequickiii
OMG!!! Well... I couldn't find the 77.77 driver, but I got the modded .inf for it and the Toshiba Black Bar fix, and installed 84.21 and used the .inf. HOLY CRAP!!! (I found 77.77... DUH!!! Was right there... LOL) It fixed one of the issues. The bottom of the screen no longer stretches past the bottom of the viewable area. ^^ But, the bar on the right side of the screen is still there, with a new addition. lol There is an extra black bar, about 1/4 inch, and between that and the main black bar, is a part, looking like a cloned part, of my desktop. But WOW!!! I think now it has to be a driver issue after all now. Now all I have to figure out is either if the 77.77 driver will completely fix the issue, or how to mod the .inf to fix it. Or..., find a modded .inf that is for the Black Bar thing, but for the Inspiron 5150. Thank you so much for your input. It has turned out very valuable indeed. ^^ Edited October 15, 2006 by johnequickiii
johnequickiii
Also just found out that there are atleast 3 different Dell part numbers for the Nvidia GeForce FX Go5200 64MB card. Could they make it ANY more confusing? lol o,O;
