Geforce go7900GS to go7900GTX BIOS mod

Now that the overclocking of the i9400 and go7900GS has been sorted, it was time to try other things.

Some guys over at NotebookForums then BIOS flashed the go7900GTX BIOS into their go7900GS video cards.

This actually made for a fully working machine.

Once done it was noted that the memory speeds were able to be increased over what the maximum the go7900GS allowed in it's BIOS.

My go7900GS has a 600Mhz (1200Mhz DDR) limit before artifacting would be seen.

After the go7900GTX BIOS flash mod, the memory is now clockable to 1750Mhz, this is a HUGE increase and with only a BIOS mod.

So the stock i9400 go7900GS comes with 507Mhz RAM and now I can run without artifacting 875Mhz.

Thats close to 75% increase in speed.

It does how ever look like the GTX BIOS mod means the memory has more latency but the overall higher speed means faster benchmarks.

Some have broken 10k in 3DMark 2k5, this is giving the actual go7900GTX a run for it's money.

Before you ask, NO the go7950GTX BIOS does not work on the go7900GS, it turns the screen off upon reboot and the BIOS will need to be reflashed blindly (highly risky)

So you have been warned

Below I'll do some comparisons of the scores from previous test with the GTX BIOS mod scores.

The BIOS flash will not enable the 4 pipes that are disabled in the GS

Results

System as tested:

Dell Inspiron 9400/E1705

2Ghz Core 2 Duo (T7200)

2GB 667Mhz RAM

17" WUXGA screen

100GB 5400RPM HD

9Cell battery.

PA-15 150w AC-Adaptor (not standard but makes no difference unless you have a go7900 GTX or M1710)

System BIOS A04

Forceware 95.97

Default go7900GS speeds 375/507Mhz Core/Memory

Default go7900GTX speeds 500/600Mhz Core/Memory

System was rebooted after each test.

3DMark 2k1

27455 Go7900GS BIOS (375/507Mhz clocks)

30188 Go7900GS BIOS (650/600Mhz clocks)

28415 Go7900GTX BIOS (500/600Mhz clocks)

20897 Go7900GTX BIOS (500/600Mhz clocks) with Vista x64

28661 Go7900GTX BIOS (650/875Mhz clocks)

This is odd, the score is not much more than a 500 Core GTX BIOS mod.

Wonder what is causing this to happen ?

Vista also takes a very large hit here

3DMark 2k3

15264 Go7900GS BIOS (375/507Mhz clocks )

20295 Go7900GS BIOS (650/600Mhz clocks)

15494 Go7900GTX BIOS (500/600Mhz clocks) with Vista x64

17820 Go7900GTX BIOS (500/600Mhz clocks)

22201 Go7900GTX BIOS (650/875Mhz clocks)

A healthy 10% performance gain here, the extra memory speed makes a difference in DX8.

Vista takes a 10% hit in this test.

3Dmark 2k5

6501 Go7900GS BIOS (375/507Mhz clocks)

9334 Go7900GS BIOS (650/600Mhz clocks)

7813 Go7900GTX BIOS (500/600Mhz clocks)

7061 Go7900GTX BIOS (500/600Mhz clocks) with Vista x64

9852 Go7900GTX BIOS (650/875Mhz clocks)

The extra 275Mhz clock speed give about a 5% increase in overall performance.

Vista again takes about a 10% hit here as well.

3DMark 2k6

3592 Go7900GS BIOS (375/507Mhz clocks)

5320 Go7900GS BIOS (650/600Mhz clocks)

4419 Go7900GTX BIOS (500/600Mhz clocks)

3969 Go7900GTX BIOS (500/600Mhz clocks) with Vista x64

5483 Go7900GTX BIOS (650/875Mhz clocks)

Here the performance is less only a 3% gain with the extra 275Mhz

We can now assume that Vista x64 is about 10% slower than Win XP x32 at the same clock speeds.

Conclusion

The extra RAM speed yields a small % increease, great for the Overclocker wanting every ounce of speed.

But for Joe Average probably not worth the effort, as battery and probably video card life will be shortened.

But as I say so often, once again you have a choice.

Still odd on the 2K1 score being lower will need some more inverstigation.

For more information and other GTX BIOS mod score have a look here

The original go7900GS overclock thread that started all this can be found here

Keep an eye on this thread as I'll update it as new things are found, that is if you read down this far without falling asleep, in that case go to bed and read a book:)

Disclaimer

Should you fry your Graphics card with trying the above, I know nothing about posting the above :)

You do so at YOUR own risk, the rewards are very good especially with DX9c games.

KEEP AN EYE ON THE GPU TEMPURATURE if this goes beyond 75 in testing with an ambient room temp of about 22degC I would lower the clocks

The GPU will throttle at 102degC but you can boil water with this and it may be too late by then.

I was probably really wasted yesterday because I was sure you posted this on the Frontpage yesterday.

No no monsieur, I had to do major editing and was still testing the benchies etc

You were watching the Icebergs not the post :)

Are you able to provide the GeForce Go 7900 GS and GTX BIOS(s)? I would like to get these so we can add extra support in NiBiTor (NVIDIA BIOS Editor)...

now its two persones who have destroyed there go7900-cards after bad ISO-flashing.

you should be carefully when doing this thing.

just let you know.

You should still be able to reflash the BIOS as long as the Laptop boots.

I thought I had ruined mine until I made a bootable USB Flash ram drive.

Put the ISO's on here, booted to this then flashed the BIOS.

And here I am again to tell the story :)

Have they made a bootable USB flash drive ?

Have they copied the original 7900GS ROM on here ? with the NVflash files ?

Have they typed in nvflash -4 -5 -6 xxxxyyyy.rom (name of original ROM) ?

As long as the machine boots this should be doable, unless the go7900 has overheated or something.

i've done this gtx mod and it works perfect, ive been watching my temps and they're fine, just be careful and watch temps and change back if necessary

my question, is would this work on other 7900gs bases laptops, the MXM site said that it is unconfirmed MXM upgradable id like to upgrade the card if possible with this bios, and eventually the card (if its really found to be upgradable)

"

Use nvidia flash command like this when switching between Bioses to bypass the CARD ID error:

Quote:

nvflash -4 -5 -6 {romname}.rom"

Even though I used -4 -5 -6.. I still got EEPROM error, are these Bios only for Dell laptops..??

It didn't work with my Go 7900 GS on my Toshiba P105 laptop..

If anyone can help me please do so.. I was just trying to flash it with the 430/1200 rom..

Thanks :)

Personally, I just couldn't break my graphics card no matter how much I "tried". I got close but never quite there...Sure you could break it after a while with high voltage settings but yeah...this is just my experience however...

Anyway, I thought you surely had all those bios files by now mavke...I've got the 7900go gtx and 7950go gtx if you need em...I'll email em later today just in case

@ ripper- Of course you want to use a stock (or at least confirmed to work) copy of your bios to try to flash back, not a dell gpu bios...You probly want to contact someone else with a toshiba with the same gpu as yours and ask them to send you a bios...then you can just use -4 -5 -6 --auto -y (infinite loop if used in autoexec and boot device remains inserted)

  • 3 weeks later...

The original.rom bios has worked wonders for my video card's performance. This rom modifies the 7900gs to use the 7900gtx bios at core speed of 500mhz and memory speed of 1200mhz. I then installed the standard dell video drivers for the 7900gs. It shows up as the 7900gtx. If you use coolbits you can verify the clock speeds. I haven't noticed any increase in temperature. It still runs much cooler than my inspiron 5160 with geforce go 5200.

With my system's original configuration Dark Messiah Might and Magic would stutter and crash constantly.

Flashing to the GTX bios has eliminated 99% of my crashes. I can now max out all settings except textures (have to run on medium textures). My computer cranks out better framerates with no artifacting and better stability

Thanks to everyone who has brought this mod to our attention (especially mobilenvidia for answering my PMs!).

I don't do benchmarking, but the in-game improvements speak for themselves. I definitely recommend every user with a e1705/9400&7900gs should flash to the 7900gtx.

Hi, I'm waiting my new laptop nw9440 (HP workstation) for next week; the video card of this notebook is a Quadro FX 1500M, as you know. My question is: is the mod possible also for this card using the fx 2500M BIOS? :)

Thankyou in advance.

PS: I'm marcoland, I've waited to buy laptop to register in your site, but I've written many times... do you remember me? :)
