Vista works fine on older Hardware, just Aero Glass is not avaiable. Aero Basic (comparable to Windows XP Style) and Windows Classic (like Windows 2000) are working.

I have a GeForce FX Go 5650 GPU and the test from Dell says no go on the Aero .

Graphics Experience NVIDIA GeForce FX Go 5650 The Assessment Tool indicates this computer's graphic solution meets Microsoft's minimum requirements for Vista but will not support the Windows Aero experience

Hmm?

I do believe your GPU is supported in the Dell OEM INFs that have been included with some Vista releases :)

Older being go5x00 ? as anything older just gives the Code 43 error

I have never seen this Code 43 Error.

Even on a laptop with GMA900 which is proven not supporting Aero.

I didn't get it on my i830 based laptop either.

But older NVIDIA based GPU's give the Code 43 after the install, this forum (NVDIA based) is full of people that have tried and failed.

I saw a P4 notebook with Geforce 4 Go running Vista RC2 out of the box (no need for a downloaded driver). Sure Aero Glass is not possible. But "unusable" OS is not true. It's a least as usable as XP.

Are you sure it was RC2, the older builds (before 5342) did install and have accelleration (not Aero only 2D)

Also did they install the Vista driver or just a XP driver ?

XP drivers work better with Vista and can work.

My statement still stands, your not going to get very far with vista and a GF2go or GF4go.

If there is a laptop that works with the Vista XDDM or even the WDDm drivers then all fine and dandy, but it will struggle to run even the desktop.

Guys, forgive me if I missed something but what's the meaning of those gpus on the list that appear on red? TY

They are laptop versions of the GPUs, which we mainly care about :)

But not all are marked red. Quadro NVS/FX M are also mobile gpus.

The title of the list says "gpus", so i assumed all of them were gpus... so, them question remais, why some are in red?

These are mobile GPUs and support WDDM 1.0 and like sn0wl said we mainly care about mobile NVIDIA GPUs.

As Rene has said we specialise in Mobile GPU's, when I got the list I just put the Mobile GPU's in red to highligh them (mainly for the front page)

There is nothing special about the red, except that they are Mobile GPU's for which the majority of people are here for (well the forums anyway, as the drivers are now used by all and sundry)

There are no mobile Quadro's in this list, but from the Quadro FX go700 and up they are supported in Vista as well.

Hope this clarifies things a little

As 7700 is a 7600 :)

I will add a link to a post a made earlier, which explains it (plus links to NVIDIA official VISTA site etc.): http://forums.laptopvideo2go.com/index....showtopic=11468

I have installed Vista Enterprise (RTM) on a Toshiba Portege S100. It worked poorly at first, but once I forced the drivers from this site to install it dramatically sped up. The S100 has an nVidia 6200TE. Aero works remarkably well. It's not supported with 512MB RAM, but there is a quick hack to get it working. Flip3D is smooth even with multiple applications open. Vista shows that it shares 64MB of the system RAM with the card, but it lists 511MB available to the system. It must be completely dynamically allocated. Also, the overall Experience rating of the machine is 2.1, which is pretty good, considering the laptop is 1.5 years old. A brand new Satellite U200 (1GB RAM, 100GB HD, Core Duo 1.6GHz CPU, but the Intel GMA950) gets a rating of 3.

It's really funny to see how people molest themselves over title bar transparency, glowing button and a lame 3D task switcher. In Linux with the proper X extensions you get a much more efficient 3D desktop. Plus it works on much older hardware.

There's no comparison. The Vista Aero interface is actually a composed interface where every program remains live. Even in the Flip-3D and in the taskbar thumbnails you can see that all programs continue to run and update their interface. Furthermore, you can't install Linux completely configured with all standard drivers in 30 minutes, while you can with Vista. Btw, I'm not a Linux hater or anything, in fact I have a warm hart for Linux...but these stupid claims everyone keeps posting...argh!

Just take any new machine, install Vista+Office2007+SQL2005+VS2005. In 2 hours it's all setup and you can start to develop. A good Linux setup takes hours and hours, and you'll never achieve the kind of integration that you have on a Windows box.

Sorry but you have absolutly no clue of what you are talking about...

I invite you to read my thread called "Better eye candy than Vista Aero Glass". Mandriva Live CD allows to fully try the compatibility without even installing anything on the hard disk drive. Then if you like it... the install takes less than 15 minutes. And a boatlod of apps are available such as OpenOffice, Firefox, GAIM or GIMP.

Using the 3D desktop on Ubuntu is just a tad longer... but using the latests 96.xx+ drivers extension makes the install pretty straight forward. Link to Beryl.

But I have to aggree with you if you HAVE to use the visual studio... you are doomed and must use Windows.

In the end you have to admit that the cr@p Microsoft added is 100% pure waste... while the Compiz/Beryl allows a couple of interesting features that are actually usefull. Mousewheel transparency and zoom.

I thought those gpus might had some different features from the rest relative to their performance with vista, thank you guys :)
