The french nerd news Clubic posted a review of Vista. They benchmarked the gaming between XP and Vista.

Using this hardware:

  • Motherboard Asus P5W-DH Deluxe - BIOS 1707,
  • CPU Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800,
  • Memory 2x1 GB DDR2 Corsair Twin2X 6400C3,
  • Graphic card NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GTX,
  • Hard disk Western Digital Raptor 36 GB Serial-ATA 150

And drivers:

  • XP: 93.71
  • Vista: 97.34

The performance difference between XP and Vista is as follows:

  • 3DMark 2006 v1.1.0: -3%
  • FEAR 1.08: -7%
  • Doom 3 1.3: -16%
  • Far Cry 1.4: -95%

The Far Cry huge performance drop comes from a D3D 100fps limit. So it has no impact of gaming per se. A little reminder the gaming performance drop is bigger because Vista dropped audio acceleration. The advanced sound effects are ran thru the CPU.
