I can't dial back the powermizer setting past balanced

Hi.

I have an MSI 16332 (ibuypower 15.4" glossy 1280x800) laptop.

When I change the powermizer settings for the nvidia 7600 card from balanced

performance to max power savings the display gets some vertical line bands in it; and then goes black.

The only way to get the screen to come on again is to restart windows (xp pro) with the last known working configuration.

1. Why is this occurring?

2. Can I fix it?

-appreciate the help I'm stumped.
