Cannot find a fix to this problem

inspiron 8100 with geforce2go mobile 16mb. All of a sudden many, but not all - jpg images corrupt, gif seem to be fine. cannot find any info for others having this problem or any fixes. Updated bios and video driver from Dell site. Thought a Windows IE problem? thought a virus? thought anti-virus? have totally wiped the hard drive, uninstalled WinMe and installed 2000 pro - did not reinstall any other software. crushed to find no improvement. Not my expertise to deal with hardware, but hate to toss this machine. Willing to try new driver, but suspect the problem may lie elsewhere. Ideas? Thanks in advance, this seemed to be the most likely bb I've found for helping solve this.

I don't think video drivers have anything to do with JPGs... I doubt updating drivers will do any good.

that's what i thought, but was hoping someone else had met this problem before or had other ideas that relate to corrupted images. the problem also manifests, although not as significantly in video playback or download - scratchy green vertical lines. most higher res jpg are completely unrecognizable
