Asus G1, or Asus in general

Hi all, i'm a total newbie with regard to laptops, MXM, and such so please go easy! :)

I'm looking at buying an Asus G1, as it is smaller/more portable than normal gaming laptops, but one thing that would swing it is the chance to upgrade.

it has a Core2 Duo 2Ghz, (definatly upgradable), and Geforce Go7700 as standard, fairly funkly i'm sure you'll agree, but i'm not sure of the following...

Anyone know if there is a fair chance that this will be MXM?

If it is, would it be in the same class as a 7900GS?

However, I'm a bit clueless as to the classes and types.

On notebookcheck.com they have the more heavy weight cards as class1 (7900/7800/X1900/X1800 etc.), the top of the class2 card pile is the 7700, with the 7600/6600/X1600 etc. this would seem to indicate that i can't put anything more powerfull in to replace the 7700.

In yet, the 7700 on MXM-upgrade.com seems to be a typeIII card. the same as a 7900, which would indicate a possible upgrade...

I don't understand... is it or isn't it? :)

but then, as i'd have a 7700 to begin with, is there any point upgrading to a 7900?

really i'm after something that would be able to beat an AthlonXP3200 with a 6800GT GFX card, as that played (past tense) all my games rather well.

Plus it really needs to be portable these days so a 17" or bigger lappie is not really a consideration, unless it has a lot going for it. :P

any answers or suggestions will be most welcome.

no worries people, i've ordered this laptop anyway, as i cannot find anything else of equivilent spec for the same or less money.

my MXM investigation will continue if it arrives without warrenty stickers over the case screws! :)

Hi there,

Asus does some stuff with MXM (or soemthing like it), check this. Not always standard MXM. I don`t know about the G1, but I`m dying to know :)

Regarding your upgrade options: depends. Fujitsu`s notebook feature the same basic design for 15" or 17" notebooks and hence they can pretty much both handle the biggest, Type III cards. The Z84 also seems to have it`s 7700 on a Type III card. To make things even more complex, the cards I can get are often on the slightly different Arima format. Meaning you need less height but more width.

Basically, if you have the nuts to open her up, I`d be very happy to comment on it :)

Cool, when this thing lands, (was supposed to be today, but now it looks like a 2 day lead time minimum), i'll clear the bench, crack the lid and take some photos.

they might not be that prompt, as i bought this thing to 'get my game on' afterall :)

eek! yeah true. had a cold shiver when i read that! i've cracked open Dell latitudes to replace mainboards, and built one out of spare parts. but its different when its your own money on the line. anyway my G1 has arrived. it has vista home premium installed. so i've been playing about with "will it work / won't it work" with my games for the time being.

from what i've seen, non of the case screws are covered with a sticker, so i think i can get away with it.

i've been reading up on the 79xx mxm modules to get me over the worry of breaking something, and actually going ahead and doing this.

what with everything going on, i may get a chance to do this tomorrow night, otherwise it'll be about a week before i can do anything, but i'll post in here when i have something... quick question, how can i paste pictures into this thread?

Oh wow... I just found this thread... but it looks like you didnt go ahead with the disassembling?

I am very tempted to go ahead with the disassembling myself, since the standard covers will uncover everything including the CPU, but I have not gone any further. There is a sticker with warranty void when removed over the one of the screw for the CPU heatsink... altho that sticker is not very well stuck on and it literally fell out with no damage when I opened it... so I have put the sticker somewhere safe so I can put it back on if I ever need to go back to warranty. Also used plastic screwdrivers and gloves to avoid leaving marks. =P

I may go ahead and disassemble further, as I have also disasemmbled many laptops before. If this Asus G1 is really upgradable, it may just be the cheapest and fastest gaming laptop out.

The refreshed version of the Asus G1 aka G1s has a different graphics card, maybe this means upgradable?

I never got to know whether it has MXM, so your guess is as good as mine :)

I have taken a further look into the laptop...

The graphics card is not accessible after taking off all the panels.

Only visible parts are HDD, RAM, WIFI, and CPU.

Altho I can see another heat pipe going a different direction next to the CPU,

I believe the graphics card could be there, so I will open up and take another look tonight.

I have also emailed Asus regarding if I can take my laptop in for an upgrade.

The response I got was......

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for contacting ASUS Customer Service.

My name is XXXX and it's my pleasure to help you with your problem.

For the moment, laptops' graphic cards have been designed to be modules (able to improve the produce efficiency. ) Though they have the same port, but we can only support the special graphic card, so I'm afraid that you can not upgrade it for the moment. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Not everything modular is upgradeable, there's probably more proprietary modules out there than MXM modules.

The G1 probably isn't MXM, and most certainly wouldn't be type III, or it would have a beefier card from stock :)

Not realy.. The Z84 is Type III but still only has a 7600/7700 :)

I do not have a lot of faith in the quality of response I get from Tech support; especially ones that require the tech to actually know something or be able to think or decide on their own.

Hi,

Just found this and since this topic concerns all asus laptops i'd like to know if it's possible to upgrade or not the Asus G2P? I have an ati x1700 512mb which isn't good at all for gaming in high resolutions. I was thinking upgrading it with a geforce go 7900 gs but i have no idea if the g2 is mxm upgradable. If anyone knows something about it, any information would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

Well the C90S is MXM 2.0 (or Type II?!?) and is advertised as upgradeable, was hoping to change at the 8600M GT that comes with it for a 8800M some time in the future, but my hopes were dashed in an article that reports that the 8800M is going to be Type IV...Well there is always the 8700M which is suppose to be a follow up to the Go 7700 and better then the Go 7900GS. I should get my C90S in about 2 weeks and I'll crack it and take a look inside to see how its set up, no voiding warranties, Barebone Kit!

Type IV is marketing ploy by Clevo, it has nothing to do with actual MXM cards. To the best of my knowledge, Type III 8800 cards will come out. Not sure if it will be available in the C90 or Z84 or whatever, especially given that they are in a different thermal class.

Well I was hoping I could upgrade my ATI X1700 to a Geforce Go 8 series. As I said before, I have a G2P and the G2S is not far from being released and it comes with a GeForce Go 8600M. So, maybe there is a possibility of upgrading my actual card then? What do you think?

I've been looking inside my G2P to check if the graphic card is MXM based but I just can't get it out....

At top center is the CPU and I think the GPU is on top right but it's seems impossible to get it out without unmounting the entire laptop.

bump :o

so,Im one owner of the first version aka G1 (Go7700) > GeForce 8600M. Side note uor display resoulution must be match the G1s spec; 15,4" WSXGA+ (1680x1050).

so wait, does that mean you upgraded the 7700 to an 8600 in your G1 successfully??
