Dell XPS 1710 - 7950GTX - battery issues

Hi,

i recently bought a dell xps 1710 equipped with a 7950 gtx 512mb gfx card (windows vista 32bit). when i realized the installed driver was over two years old i decided to upgrade to a more recent version. so i got the 164.01 driver instead. i was quite happy to see that everything worked out fine.

usually I use my notebook as a desktop replacement and therefore use it only when it is plugged.

when unplugged there are some really wierd errors on the screen.

I took a photo with my digital camera in order to show you what it looks like.

you can see that parts of the picture seem to overlap and reoccur.

batteryproblem.jpg

these only occur when using windows and standard applications. in 3d games and in photoshop everything is fine. alt-tabbing out of the 3d-application works fine for some seconds and the screen is ok but still only for some seconds. switching to the 3d-app again removes the problem.

maybe you can help me? driver issue? thanks in advance!

I ran into similar issues on my Clevo 570 (7900 GTX) after playing with the power management settings - I have mine set to max performance for both AC and Bat for this reason (I barely ever use bat.) I'd suggest increasing some of the settings to higher performance and seeing if it makes any change,

Cheers

165.01? It's old; 163.14, 163.44 etc are months newer.

thanks for the replies.

going to try the other drivers you mentioned or riva tuner (saw that in another topic)

Hi

I have the same system as you and I've also encountered the same problem, but using the 163.44 drivers.

Did you find a solution?

cheers

Hey Guys,

I think I've found somewhat of a solution. Using the v156.55 driver does not result in this problem. I downloaded it from here ( http://forums.laptopvideo2go.com/index....showtopic=14837 )and used the original nv_dispd INF file.

However, a drawback that I've just noticed is the apparent loss of 1440X900 and 1680X1050 resolutions! These are not listed as supported under Display Properties in System/Control Panel and, more annoyingly, do not appear as options in games such as Bioshock and MOH Airbourne! Grrrr!

I am having exactly these problems. I have tried to change the battery power settings, to the same as the mains power settings, but the problem still occurs. (interestingly it does not happen until login, the Vista splash screen is perfect).

I think I read that the DELL under-clocks the video card on battery no matter what, maybe that is the problem.

I will try the 156.55 driver. I don't think I will miss those resolutions.

Thanks, before I read this thread I thought maybe it was a memory problem.

Hang on... 156.55 is listed with the INF not ready yet and is not listed in the main driver list.

I found a reference to 158.45 drivers fixing this issue as well. I will try both and report back.

That's correct, there isn't a modified INF for this driver. Instead, you should use the original INF named "nv_dispd.inf" and found in the zip file "original_inf(s).zip" - which comes with the 156.55 driver.

I've gotten round the resolution problem too by editing the nv_dispd.inf file in the following way before installing the driver:

I replaced this section of text:

HKR,, NV_Modes, %REG_MULTI_SZ%, "{*}S 1920x1200x64 1920x1440x64 2048x1536x64=1F;640x400 640x480x64 800x600x64 1024x768x64 1152x864x64 1280x800x64 1280x960x64 1280x1024x64=7F;320x200 320x240 400x300 480x360 512x384=F;SHV 1400x1050x32 1600x1024x32 1600x1200x32 1920x1200 1920x1440 2048x1536=1F;1400x1050x8,16 1600x1024x8,16 1600x1200x8,16=3F;640x480 800x600 1024x768 1152x864 1280x800 1280x960 1280x1024=7F;"

with this:

HKR,, NV_Modes, %REG_MULTI_SZ%, "{*}S 320x200 320x240 400x300 480x360 512x384 640x350 640x400=1FFF;SHV 640x480 720x400 720x480 768x576 800x600 852x480 853x480 854x480 864x480 1024x640 1024x768 1152x864 1280x720 1280x768 1280x800 1280x854 1280x960 1280x1024 1360x768 1365x768 1366x768 1400x1050 1440x900 1600x900 1600x1000 1600x1024 1600x1200 1680x1050 1800x1440 1920x1080 1920x1200 1920x1440 2048x1280 2048x1536 2560x1600 3840x2400x8,16,32,64=1F;"

Hope that helps.

Great! Those drivers seem to work.

Thanks. Only one thing, the original nv_modes line in the copy I downloaded was:

HKR,, NV_Modes, %REG_MULTI_SZ%, "{*}S 640x480 1280x768 1280x800x32 1280x960 1360x768x32 1920x1200=1;800x600 848x480 1024x768 1152x864 1280x1024 1600x1200 1920x1440 2048x1536=3B;{407-42D}S 640x480x64 1280x768x64 1280x800x64 1280x960x64 1360x768x64 1920x1200x64=1;800x600x64 848x480x64 1024x768x64 1152x864x64 1280x1024x64 1600x1200x64 1920x1440x64 2048x1536x64=3B;{407-408,40B-42D}S 1280x960x64=3A;{409}S 960x600x64=3B;{98-408,40B-53F}S 1280x960=3A;{98-39B,409,530-53F}S 1280x800x8,16 1360x768x8,16=1;"

Your update worked fine and adds more modes. Thanks

Jon

I have the same laptop and have the same problem, I find if I turn the screen to medium (16 bit) all is OK

This deactivates the vista aero desktop, which seems to cause driverconflict.

Hi

Is there any driver newer than 158.45, that works without this screen corruption?

Hi

Is there any driver newer than 158.45, that works without this screen corruption?

Anyone have an answer to this? I just tried 163.69 and I get the same corruption like in the screenshot above. I will try 156.65 and see how it goes. If not, then 156.55. :)

UPDATE: I just tried 156.65 and I still had the same issue. Giving 156.55 a try

UPDATE2: Just installed 156.55 and it works, but are there any better/newer ones that work properly?

Just installed 156.55 and it works

Yes, it works without corruption - but PowerMizer is disabled (doesn't change core/memory frequency in 2D).

Therefore, 158.45 still the latest good driver with full mobile support.

UPDATE: After ~4 hours on 156.55 corruption occured...

Thanks, but if i don't want to flash unlocked video BIOS and change the clocks, there is no way out than stay on 158.45.

Even disabling PowerMizer in INF doesn't save from corruption - tried on 163.75.

In 163.75 the problem is fixed just the older series drivers 156.xx where the only known fix for now is the BIOS Memory clock to 120Mhz+

The 163.xx fixes in other link work, even tried on a M1710 (debaucher)

Not at all - i tried yesterday evening.

Your problem is then not the same as the M1710's go7950 problem.

But probably similar.

Powermizer will probably be to blame here as well, and the battery memory speeds will be too low.

The disable powermizer, I mentioned in another thread does this work (even though battery power will be used faster) ?

I think my problem is the same - corruption happens very often (~ every 2-3 minutes) on desktop when the clocks are reducing.

However...

The disable powermizer, I mentioned in another thread does this work (even though battery power will be used faster) ?

... disabling PowerMizer in INF make life little bit easier - corruption happens after 1 hour or more. Strange situation - the clocks shouldn't be changed.

It could be combined with the OS's power saving features.

So I should use 163.75 and it'll work ok?

Side note: When I use powerdvd 7.3 to play HD DVD movies on my laptop, powerdvd closes after a few seconds of play or so (after the movie/main title starts) without any errors. I think it might be all the VC1 encoded movies. When I play blu-ray movies, it works perfectly fine. Any idea what's going on there?
