Overclocking nVidia 8400M G

Recommended Posts

Hey,

I´ve clocked mine 8400M G to 530/520 - with avg temp. 48/49ºc, full load 63/64ºc.

For this im using 158.45 driver but i think if the newest drivers (163.71) let me overclock i would get a better result @ 3dMark06

3DMark06 - I got 1239 Marks.

I think its a good result for this GFX!

What u guys think?

WARNING TO ALL XP USERS:

You Cannot overclock if you upgrade to any of the 15xx or 16xx series drivers without flashing Bios. In my opinion it is better to stick with the stock 10xx drivers and overclock, than it is to upgrade to newer drivers without overclocking:

3DMark05 Scores:

158.22 - 2576

156.66 - 2587

163.16 - 2579

163.76 - 2642

101.28 (stock) overclocked from 400/400 to 425/460 (barely any overclocking) - 2722

I'm not sure if the overclocking problem applies to everyone on XP, but I know it applies to most people based on extensive forum research on my part.

If anyone has found a newer driver thats overclockable please let me know.

Don't think you want to overclock the 8400m-g at all heat issues in 13.3 laptop will casue problems with your mobo and other components. keep the 8400g-m cool, that's what it has been engineered for...

I've just installed v169.21 drivers and overclocked my 8400M G to 466/586MHz... 78'C on load... For comparison: 69'C on load at 400/400MHz...

Video begins to fail on memory clock higher than 590MHz...

Core still works on 500+MHz, but it overheats too much...

I have ASUS F3Sc (aka Z53s)... It has common heatpipe on chipset, CPU and GPU, and only one fan... So, additional heat from GPU makes worse effectiveness of the whole cooling system...

3DMark'06 v1.1.0 Score changed from 1096 to 1342... (1280x800, NoAA)

And now I can play Oblivion with HDR rendering without neurosis... ;-)

well i have mine overclocked at core 650mhz ,mem 1030mhz , shaders 1600mhz stable enough at 75 c,169.28 drivers ,winxp sp2 32bit, 2 gig 667mhz ddr2 ram, t7300 core2duo 2.00GHhz.i hit 4200+ points in 3dmark05!amazing if you consider that i started from 2100 points with no overclock(core 400mhz/mem600mhz/shaders800mhz) :) .i'm also looking to overvoltage it to squeeze more out of it,but i don't think it's possible.

You´re not talking about the 8400M G rigth? U must talking about a 8400M GS or GT!!

@reiluke, do you also get better "in-game" performance with those better 3DMark scores? I think we have the same kind of laptop though I having performance issues whenever I try and upgrade my driver to newer versions, as explained in my other post which I quoted below.

I hope you could help me on this one, thanks a lot.

Hey guys, I would just like to ask, especially for those who have low end cards (ie. 8400M G's/7300's), if you update your drivers with the newer ones, do you get ACTUAL IN-GAME perfomance increases? Yes, 3dmark scores are higher, but how about actual in-game performance?

I'm asking this because I'm also using an 8400M 'G'- based laptop and every driver that I have tried on it just makes in-game performance worse. yes, the 3dmark scores are higher, BUT in-game performance is SLOW. So far, after trying the 154.xx and the 169.xx and even the 171.xx drivers, I'm still better of with my old 101.26 STOCK driver...

Some examples are:

Company of Heroes w/o OF Expansion (w/OF, -5 to 10 FPS) ::

Stock driver= 35-55 FPS avg. @1024x640, Shaders LOW, Textures & Effects HIGH

ANY of the Newer Drivers = 15-35 FPS avg. with same settings.

C&C Generals

Stock Driver (101.26) = 30FPS avg. @ 1024x640 with all settings high except particle effects

ANY of the Newer Drivers = 15-25 FPS avg. with same settings.

Is it just me, or do any of you guys also have the same problem? Hope you guys could enlighten me on this one. Thanks a lot.

Btw, if you would ask, my system is an Acer Aspire 4520G, specs are found below:

GeForce 8400M 'G' 128MB Integrated RAM (384MB shared)

1.8GHZ Turionx2 Processor (TL-56)

1GB RAM (DDR2-333, runs at 300 for some reason...)

160GB HD (5400 RPM)

NForce 610 Mobo

Those are the important stuff I think...Again, thank you to anyone who could help me on this one.

Also, I'm re-posting my query here since more 8400M G users might also be looking at this thread. Hope you guys could help...thanks.

I see. What games have you tried playing? and have you tried using the stock drivers (ie. 101.26) and tested their in-game performance as well?

Also, what video and system bios versions do you have? And do you have the 4520G 1GB model, or the 2GB one? Sorry for having many questions, I'm just trying to find out any other possible reasons as to why I am not getting any better in-game performance with the newer drivers. (The stock driver 101.26 + overclocked @ 500/500 gives me the best performance so far.)

Finally i tried overclocking.

Here are my results:

Laptop: LG E500 S.AP21P - Nvidia 8400M G

OS: Windows XP Pro SP2

Driver : 169.04

Rivatuner at : 500/500, it doesn´t get to 70º, max 69º

3dmark06 : 1300 and something

Driver : 169.09

Rivatuner at : 500/500, it doesn´t get to 70º, max 69º

3dmark06 : 1422

I´m not using anything to cool or lift the laptop to help air get cleared, don´t know if I need it with these temps..

I tried increasing the clocks but either increasing the core or the memory clock above 500, during games the system always became unstable!! I don´t know why cos everyone has achieved it. Anyway I´m happy with this results and I´ll stick with this numbers as I´m afraid of trashing the gfx. I have Supreme Commander getting more than 40fps at times and always above 30 (details all low and off)!! I can even play with some settings on high that I still have 20+ fps :)

Still I wish I had a better GFX :) but I need the laptop for work, so someday I´ll buy a really good desktop to play games (cheaper).

Keep posting your results and ideas, cheers.

I'm looking into overclocking my Geforce 8400M GS using Rivatuner2.06 and forceware driver 169.04 - (can't seem to o/c with 169.09 - ??)

Before any clocking at all i'm getting over 1500 in 3Dmark06 which i think is pretty respectable - (probably my dual core helping boost my scores) - but have seen people claiming well into 1600's.

My only concern is gpu temp. With no o/clocking its happily below 70 at all times (average at around 66) - i'm planning to experiment and keep my temp below 85.

Would this be too high?? - I know many people say not to o/clock these mobile cards at all for risk of gpu or other component damage - Or could i even push more??

Any advice would be really helpful. Also if any other drivers may be better? Thanks.

I'm the same guy,running the same pc now with vista home premium x86.performance is notably decreased than that of XP(about 20% which is a lot).anyway,using 171.xx and 173.xx drivers core650mhz/shaders 1500/memory 1024mhz i've hit 2000 points in 3dmark 06! :)

Hello,

I just bought the Packard Bell easynote MB65-P-042 with the NVIDIA GF 8400M G videocard. I have done the 'can you run it' check to play FIFA 2006 World Cup (I want to play FIFA soccer 2006 but it wasn'tn listed) and I passed it gloriously. The problem is though that I can't play FIFA soccer 2006.

Could 'overclock' help me? Can anybody explain me what that means or give me a good link?

Already many thanks.

Grts from Belgium

Hi! I've just upgraded my driver to 174.31. I think there must be some problem of the old version drivers coz while I played CZ 1.6 I found that it will keep lagging if I threw a smoke grenade. It won't lag when I play CZ on my old PC with GFX 5600...... 8400m G lags even when I play chess built in the vista. That is why I'm really disappointed with this card...... After upgraded the driver I feel it is "a little" better than before, but I'm still not satisfied. Could anyone teach me what is the best overclocking condition without burning my notebook? In turns, what temperature is acceptable for my graphic card if I want to play a game smoothly and the system won't crash? Thx.

I have that card too. Try to do a clean install of the drivers first. Clean your system and defrag your disk.

Respecting to the OC, mine is at 500/500 and I have a good improvement of almost 10fps in some games. My max temp is 78º OC´ed with heavier games. Without OC I get 71º.

Cheers
