Hi everyone.

I recently bought a Dell Inspiron 1520 with the following configuration :

- Intel Core 2 Duo T7500

- 2GB DDR2 667 Mhz

- GeForce 8600M GT 256MB GDDR2 (163.69 driver)

- 160GB @ 7200RPM

- Windows Vista 32bit

I am having problems with my 8600M GT.

First of all, i am only getting 2944 marks in 3DMark 06.

I checked on the futuremark ORB and 80%-90% of people are getting over 3000.

I also feel like i am not getting good performance in games.

I'm not quite sure what could be wrong but i feel like my 8600M GT is underperforming.

If anyone has any advice, it would be great to hear it.

Thanks !

A classic mistake almost everybody does, is that you use a different resolution. Most people use 1024x768. Probably you used 1280x800. Check this out...

Ok, this is really odd.

I havn't mentioned this before, but i am using an external display (22" LCD @).

External and internal displays are always set at 1280 x 800 for benchmarks.

I'm always using one display at a time, never both.

I've managed to overclock the card to 660 / 470 with no crashes / artifacts (475 / 400 being the default clock speeds).

This gave a significant boost to my 3D Marks, up to 3554.

Still, i knew something wasn't right as most people got that score without an overclock.

The funny part ?

Just for fun, i disconnected my external display and tried a benchmark again.

4022 marks !

I don't really understand why this is happening, since i'm running my external / laptop displays at the same resolution.

This is really strange indeed, but i am somewhat happy that my card isn't deffective / problematic after all.

Once again, if anyone knows why this is happening, please enlighten me.

Your vid card still has to render your mainscreen. May not be much, but it may account for the difference. I also believe many of the DDR2's out there have 512MB, not 256.

When i connect my external display, i disable the notebook display completely.

I'm not quite sure why the notebook would have to render the 3D twice.
