8600GT M Drivers = I'm confused

Hello guys, I just got a new laptop for christmas, and I'm having a bit of trouble with the video card I think.

The laptop is a Vostro 1500, and It's got a GT 8600M with 256mb, and I'm trying to play some games and getting a decent framerate, but some are crashing/locking up. In the quest to fix this, I ran across the idea of updating my drivers.

I see that the latest drivers are the 169.25 Forceware drivers.

But when I go to dell's page for my drivers http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/...p;fileid=213638

It says the latest version is 101.43.

But on my computer, the best I could find was in the device manager which said my drivers were version 7.15.11.5655.

The question is, do I need to update? If my drivers are old that could be the problem with the games. Now reading over this site, I see that in order to install the latest drivers I would have to use the modded .inf, and the drivers you provide. Now when I do this, do I need to uninstall the old ones? How would I go about doing this. Just go to "uninstall" in the device manager?

Thanks for any help.

Hi,

I´ve got an Asus G1S with the same graphics card - GF 8600M GT.

If I were you I would just try to get the latest Update with the modded inf.

On the Dell website there are only the original GF 8600M GT drivers displayed.

Just install the newest driver and then you´ll see if your graphics card, your notebook or your system is the reason for your framerate...

Regards

156.55 is from 2007-08-23, that's 4 months "old". But you can try something newer, if it's better.

Oh I see, I didn't realize that my drivers were only 4 months old. In that case I don't feel it's worth upgrading, as I don't think that much difference would be made.

Thanks for the help anyway though, I'll bookmark this site in case I need to update in the future.
