Guest EW
I already did what wook did. But after playing the game for a good 5 or 6 hours, the downclocking comes back to haunt me. Damn. == My 5920g with 8600mgt runs hot as usual (90c to me is usual), but the downclocking happens 6 hours after it was stable? here i want to ask wook how i can apply the thermal paste on a laptop because i have never done it before and where exactly do i apply the paste?? Guest wook
Did a clean install last night. Forgot my fricken password. Why do you want that screen shot? doesnt say anything interesting. Plus.... My GPU is downclocking again.. Really getting confused... it was running fine yesterday. Its was time for a clean install, and now running 174.74 again its downclockin again. arhhaaa!!!! Mark my words... I will solve this issue!

Guest Guest
Very Good drivers! Although i've only tested them a couple of minutes with Assassins Creed, I must say, The game runs noticeably smoother and faster by, in my opinion, quite a large margin. :) . It also appears that Powermizer is working correctly because GPU-Z informs me that the clocks in Windows (wit Aero on) are: 169.00 for the core and 100.00 for the memory. The only downside i've noticed, and is als reported by a couple of other users are the increase in temperatures. My GPU (8600M GT) used to run at an idle temperature of 55C. Now it runs idle at about 60C. Fortunately the GPU doesn't get really hot during gaming. During AC I saw a temperature of around 80-85C, which is pretty decent. I've upgraded from 174.74 and I am using the latest GPU-Z (just released) for montoring purposes. :)
wook
Maybe I should start a new post about this issue, but seems that a lot of people are looking here for the same problem. It seems that whenever my system hits 91 Oc it down clocks the card. Obviously a safety feature of the card, but it has never done this before. I can no longer over clock as high as I used to I am going to pull apart my system, put it back together. Vacuum all parts, and take every scrap of dust out of it. (laptop is 6 months old) Give me a few hours, and will let you know if this solves the issue. {I don't think its driver related, as I only have one driver installed on my system after a format and a clean install. 174.74 has always been fantastic} Edited June 17, 2008 by wook
Guest EW
Negatory, wook my acer 5920g is boils water and the downclocking did happen until i installed the 175.70 driver and any driver after that just has the same problem. It feels like the driver physically manipulated my laptop. I used to play gears of war at blazing 95 degrees and not to mention bioshock. Those were no problem, so why do i get downclocks when i just hit 90 in mass effect? Yup, doesn't make sense to me either!~
wook
yeah mine didnt start happening until installation of 177.26 Well, it is possible that upon restart it flashed the BIOS without us knowing, maybe adding this 'heat safety' feature? Update: Have removed fan, S bend heat sink, chip and ram. Cleaned all. Just installing them again. Was a bit of dust, not heaps though. After i finish will play company of heroes and get it above 91 Oc.. don't tell the boss.. haha! Guest EW
I have posted this on another forum and some say it has to do with speed step. wook you know anything about it and how to disable speed step? if you do give that a try while you are at it
wook
Finished putting it back together. got to 92 Oc then it down clocked.. I had to crank the clock speed up, as removing the dust slowed down the heat up of the GPU. hmmmm anyone got deas? No idea what that is. EDIT: idiot! Sorry I read that as speed setup... Bit dyslexic maybe?!? Ha-ha.. It usually applies to laptops. A setting in the BIOS to stop chips running at full speed, powersaving i guess. Don’t think I have it in my BIOS.. I’ll take a look. EDIT: I do have it.. disabled it. will test shortly Edited June 18, 2008 by wook
wook
OK... 1) After disabling speed step - I noticed that my fan was going all the time, and as a result the temperature of the GPU and CPU dropped. : So even though this is not what caused the issue in the first place, it has made the whole systm a lot cooler Speed step reduces the voltage to your CPU. So disabling this will make your enable full power mode for your CPU. This heats up the CPU more, making the fan go more often, cooling the system down. Funny how that works eh.. Ok... had a GPU stress test running for almost 2 hours and max tem was 76 Oc Lower than I have ever seen = Even though that is not the solution i was looking for... I would recommend doing entering the BIOS and disabling SPEED STEP (would use a lot more battery though) Edited June 18, 2008 by wook
Guest EW
this is EW again .... ummm i go into the BIOS right? but i cant find SPEED STEP ANYWHERE can you take a picture of your screen in the BIOS or something to help me find it?? Guest EW
i have a very limited BIOS so how do i access the other options in BIOS?
wook
In mine its under 'performance' other subcats are hard drive caching, GPU memory allocation. Or you could try power management? Umm.. i only have about 10 options in total i can change. have a through a sift through all settings. should be there. Original version of speed step was on the 'm' processors from intel. or if you havean AMD it will be called 'cool n quiet'
Guest EW
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread...d=1#post3503177 this guide shows how to disable powermizer please read and test it out remember to back up your registry before doing this
wook
looked into it... i dont have any settings like he suggests in my registry. Im happy with what i have done already... not getting any more underclocks. still want to know why it suddently did it. but, i guess now i have one solution i'll move my intentions elsewhere

Zoleegee
Yo! I have an ASUS G1s w 8600gt I'm now using the recommended 174.74 driver. My story started last week. I first used 167.43 driver, then last week I've Installed 177.39, 177. 41. Now, I'm using the mentioned driver, after completing the steps above. I've only noticed that 'stuttering' effect in GRID, after a few minutes. It all started when I installed 177.39, and still remains. I'm running riva tuner for monitoring purposes (no OC) only, and fraps to check the FPS. When the stuttering starts in GRID, there's no FPS dropping (by FRAPS), and the GPU is just above 90degrees and later hits 96Cels. Ambient temp is 27 now... Idle GPU temp is 68-69... So what is clocking down? What's going on? thnx Zoleegee I' just ran 3dmark06, and the results are (fw 174.74): score: 4075 SM2.0: 1660 HDR/SM3.0: 1514 CPU sc.: 1926 Are they OK?
