9300M G, resolutions, insanity

Hello all,

To say things bluntly, I am totally at loss at what to do.

Basically I have a secondary monitor, that I can turn on, and I want it to be set at 848x480 or 852x480.

I've tried almost every single version(from the laptop's builder, from the forums here, with the modded inf)

yet it always only proposes me the same set of resolutions, that starts at 800x600...

Moreover I can not select 50Hz on the secondary monitor even though it supports it, and things only start

up at 60Hz in the options. I have of course ticked on the "list incompatible modes" but it didnt help.

I tried creating a custom monitor profile with rivatuner, but that did not help either, even when I set all

resolutions inside, with 48-78Hz as vertical freq.

I tried using the nvidia custom resolutions, but 1.half of the time they dont change a thing on the secondary monitor 2.the other half of the time things work in the custom resolution adding test, but then it switches back to the crude 800x600, and while there's an entry added in the custom resolutions associated to the monitor, I cant select it anywhere.

Any help will be appreciated, as well as an explanation as to how windows+nvidia decide of what resolutions are available.(I know of modes.txt in the nvidia driver, of the resolutions inside of the nvidia inf, and of infs for monitors... what else there is and how things intereact is a mystery)

Thanks for any help,

Paul

Just out of curiosity, why do you want to run the monitor in a resolution this low?

480p plasma tv.

Also I am pretty much sure it is possible... because I actually did it in my old win install(my disk crashed since then so I had to reinstall, and I cant get it to work anymore now)

Do you remember which driver version you were using before? Also, have you tried just running it at the next highest resolution, and letting the graphics card down-scale it?

Yes, and tried it without success, even had a copy of the same package.

That obviously works but looks ugly. 1:1 pixel mapping is a must for any display:/

To add something I just noticed after installing brand new drivers... it does seem like I have most of the infs resolutions... but not all.

After unticking "hide modes that this monitor can not display", I get a larger panel of resolutions... but all between 800x600 and 3840x2400

On a side note, I even went as far as changing the nv_modes to be ultra lenient:

HKR,, NV_Modes, %REG_MULTI_SZ%, "{*}S 320x200 320x240 400x300 480x360 512x384 640x350 640x400 640x480 720x400 720x480 720x576 768x576 848x480 852x480 853x480 854x480 864x480 800x600 1024x640 1024x768 1152x864 1176x664 1280x720 1280x768 1280x800 1280x854 1280x960 1280x1024 1360x768 1365x768 1366x768 1400x1050 1440x900 1600x900 1600x1000 1600x1024 1600x1200 1680x1050 1768x992 1800x1440 1920x1080 1920x1200 1920x1440 2048x1280 2048x1536 2560x1600 3840x2400x8,16,32,64=1FFF;"

{*}S should mean all cards, and 8,16,32,64=1FFF all color depth at any frequency(for the 1FFF bit)

However, I obviously do not get all of these, and only get those above 800x600... Which does not make much sense.

As a new hint to the problem... if I click on "list all modes" in the adapter properties in display properties... it complains of "bad color depth - driver returning bad data"

EDIT: ... Managed to fix that, and 848x480@32bit 60Hz now is in thelist... but will not appear in the choices windows gives me...

EDIT2: I have found a way to do it though, using powerstrip. But it's a bit ugly to configure. I wish it'd work by default.
