dabomy
Hi I have my 8600m overclocked at 595/495, and I'm using i8kfangui to make sure that the fan is on high. During gameplay, my CPU peaked at 98C! Is that way too high? Should I turn my overclock down or invest in some better cooling?
Claw
Are you sure that was CPU? Most of GPU's can withstand 120-130 degrees while CPU's about 90... guess you were lucky you didn't burn it. Yeah for sure you need to do something with this. Try cooling pads if you want to keep it O/C. You could also put in some new thermal paste and clean the cooler out of dust.
Au_Xtr3me
Whoa 98C!!! I don't think that's possible for an Inspiron 1520 because the system will automatically shut down to protect components. It may be a miss reading from the thermometer. Also you probably don't need to use fan control software as the motherboard switches fan speed according to temperature. Try using Nvidia system monitor for your temperatures. Change your clock rates to the default and see if you are getting the same temperature. It may also be that the temperature monitoring software is reading in Fahrenheit not Celsius. If it doesn't change get your Dell fixer-man to check it.
wook
The temp. may have been 98, but i think what you ment to say was GPU not CPU. eitherway the heatsink is the same for both CPU and GPU, which cant be good for the components. A laptop cooler will only bring it down 2-3 Oc at most. this is a good investment for keeping the whole system cool. (especially hard drives) But as Claw said, open up the back clean the dust out. if necessary remove the heat sink and apply new thermal paste or pad. but if its under warantee then just get dell to do all that. good luck
dabomy
There's a screenshot. I think that my computer has to be reading it wrong or something. I don't see how its getting that hot. I'll try to play without the overclock and see what I get.
coolcop06
damn both of those temps are HOTT! haha my cpu peaks at 66c and my gpu peaks at 85c. i think processors can reach 100c, and gpus 120c. so thats really too hot, call your laptop manufacturer and tell them exactly whats going on, and the temps that you have (except that you overclock, haha). you should get a motherboard/cpu replacement. i dont think turning off overclocking will totally solve your heat problem... dabomy
So i've come to the conclusion that i8kfangui is somehow reporting back the wrong temperatures. According to NVIDIA Monitor View, with overclocks off the temps hit about 79 celcius, while i8kfan says it hit 98. I guess that I won't use i8kfangui to manage my fans anymore, I'll just turn the fans on high when playing games

Hmm, i'll try to figure it out edit: so, im not quite sure what to do since my GPU temp according to Nvidia Monitor is 65 right now and on i8kfan gui im getting a GPU of 58. Yet when the im playing games nvidia says im at around 79, while i8kfan says im over 90. Are there any other good programs for monitoring GPU and CPU temp? dabomy
I used HWmonitor, overclocked at 595/495 with my fans on high, my cpu hit a high of 91/98 c! My gpu hit 93C! My laptops running way too hot. Tomorrow I'm going to try playing without the clock and see what readings i get. if its still hot i'll give dell a call. thanks for the help guys. dabomy
It appears I have a cooling issue for sure. Ran at stock settings, still got a core temp of 98 and a gpu temp of 91. I'll give dell a call in the morning UPDATE: Dell's sending me a new heatsink and thermal pad, hope that works Edited October 31, 2008 by dabomy
dabomy
All fixed, there was a HUGE piece of dust in my laptop. The dell guy also put in the new heatsink and thermal pad
