Is it a dream for this card to reach 4000 mark? :)

Sorry but I'm a little lazy! :)

I don't want to try every driver since 169.04. Below is what I have try so far but still can't get over 32xx mark on default clock.

3dmark06 - driver @1280x1024

3165 - 169.04

3135 - 169.28

3215 - 174.74

3090 - 175.12

3134 - 178.24

3149 - 179.13

3148 - 180.70

3227 - 182.05 dox

----UPDATE---------

3421 - dox's 182.05 oc 510X425

Clean-up system

3384 - dox's 182.05 - w/o OC

nnnn - dox's 181.20 - 3dmark06 reported a "Display Changed" error during the run and exit out.

3147 - dox's 185.20 - sleep/wakeup problem

------------------------

If you have 8600m GT w/ DDR2 than Can you tell me what driver are you currently using and your 3dmark06 score, max temp?

Any help/hint would be greatly appreciated.

PS. always reverse to vista driver before new driver were installed

I use the official nvidia 179.48 driver (can download from here or nvidia). Games play well (no blue screen) has physx and normal temps (max 75C) idle 55C. Dell Inspiron 1520 user here.

I use Dox 181.22 quality preset and quite happy with them :)

Just installed RivaTune 2.24 and set the clock to 510/425.

Happy to report my new 3dmark06 score is 3421 :) :)

gpu temp max at 72

cpu temp max at 78

Could this be the best this system can do since the cpu is only 1.5 ghz?

What driver did you use? What is your CPU score in 3D Mark 06?

I's using dox 182.05 driver and cpu score was 1244. This is with 1280x1024 res.

I bump up the clock to 520 but the 3dmark06 crash due to step down.

again .... can this system do better?

changed 182.06 to 182.05

Don't get hung up on 3DMark scores.

If the temp suits you alright, then the best driver currently is Dox's most recent one, for how your games look and perform.

Optimize your system in other ways if you want to see further improvements.

Are your sure that your getting 5011 3Dmarks?

Are you overclocking or using a lower resolution?

I find it incredibly hard to believe that an 8600m GT w 512 ddr2 will get over 4000 3DMarks (06) at stock clocks and at 1280x1024

5000+ is the kind of score that an 8700m GT or a 9600m GT with ddr3 gets

Hey!

I' have the very same card (8600mGT 512MB DDR2) clocked 625/1600/460 and in 3DMark06 i get between 5000 and 5050 depending on drivers at standard resolution - 1280x800. So it is rather matter of overclocking than resolution ;-)

Good luck with yours!

So far dox's 182.05 works best for me, clocks and everything related on the pic:

Max temps are around ~72 C.

You are right, I use lower resolution @ 1280x800, which is most common for laptop tests, and OC.

My 8600m gt is softmodded to 8700m gt, but it didn`t make any difference comparing to my previous 3D mark 06 tests.

Galdere:

I only play RTS games. Mostly EE with large units count, so the FPS go down below teen during battle. Can you give me some pointer on other way to increase the FPS? thks

sssniper

I will try 181.22 driver and increase the clocking. Also I will download the latest Dox's driver and do the same.

H3r3tic

What driver are you using?

Kiisu

What is you 3Dmark06 score? and what is the res.?

Thank you all for you input.

Actually that result of 5011 was achieved with Dox 181.20 performance preset, as you may see from the screenshot, but i use 181.20 quality preset for gaming at the moment.

nvHaku,

RTS are heavier on the CPU than most other games, that sounds like what you are describing, and so improving your graphical performance will only help a little. It is possible to up the FSB to OC your CPU, but I don't recommend it. I'd suggest Dox's 182.05/185.20 with a software or bios OC of about 10%. Don't forget to use driver sweeper in safe mode when you change driver. Then you'll want to try and make your OS as slick as possible. Get hold of trial version of Yamicsoft's Vista Manager and run the optimization wizard. Sort out those startup progs, background services, scheduled tasks etc. Clean the registry and defrag it. Have look at the other options it allows you to change, and when you've tried them out you can uninstall the trial program, it will keep the changes. Get hold of CCleaner and Defraggler free from Piriform to clean up and get your hard disk in order.

I could go on forever about how you can alter your system, to make it perform better for certain tasks, but I wouldn't want to be responsible for causing problems if you didn't know how to reverse those changes should the need arise. However, it is worth reading up on how to do some tweaking if it interests you:

sssniper,

If you don't use the default resolution for 3dmark you should say so really, otherwise comparisons don't mean anything. Your screen allows it, so I don't know why you lower it to acheive a 'false' higher score. I'd say it's only worth doing it lower than default if the native resolution doesn't allow for it, and then state as much.

Thanks Galdere,

I have been using Revo Uninstaller to remove the driver before each new installation. Cleaning up the OS sound like a good Idea. I will give that a try.

Thanks for the verification, I was concerned that people were giving out the wrong messages.

Seeing as you said both 1280x800 and OC that makes much more sense now :)

EDIT: @ H3r3tic going from 1280x1024 to 1280x800 gains about 600 3Dmarks (~25%)

I go from 4500 to 5100 (stock) just from changing resolution

As it is shown on the screenshot, it is 5361 and resolution is 1280x800. My native is 1440x900, but i always game on 1280x800 anyway.

update ....

I clean up the system and try the following:

- installed dox's 185.20 driver, the 3dmarl06 score was only 3147 @ 1280x1024. However, the system was having sleep/wake-up problem.

- installed dox's 181.20 driver, the 3dmark06 fail to run due to "Display Changed" error.

- reinstall dox's 182.05, the 3dmark06 now score 3384 @ 1280x1024 stock. Woot!!! :)

This could be the best that this system can do. For now, I will reduce the in-game native res from 1600x1050 to 1280x1024 during LAN party. :)

again, thank you all for your input.

offtop:

look, Galdere, as you may see in this and other threads, many people use 1280@800 in their tests and during gaming. I never meant to cheat or state some false scores - I don`t have any reasons to do it. I always post a screenshot or give a link to it. BTW, on russian acer forums we use 1280@800 much more often, than 1280@1024, because a lot of guys have 15.4 inch screens with lower native resolution.

I'm not saying you're cheating sssniper, I'm just saying if you can use the default you should use it.

If you are comparing with someone who can only manage 1280x800 then fair enough, but then you both say what was used.

Saying your 3dmark as what it is at 1280x800 and not explaining as such is just confusing though.

You didn't provide a screenshot when you stated over 5k in this thread.

This isn't an Acer forum, and most people can run the test at default as they do on many other sites, and so should be able to assume that people have done the same unless they state otherwise.

nvHaku,

1680x1050 is a 16:10 resolution. It would be better if you can downscale to a lower res that is preferably the same ratio.
