Drivers affecting GPU Temp Monitor

Hi, I just installed Windows 7 on my Dell Inspiron 1420 (8400M GS), and after messing around with a couple of Forceware drivers I've noticed that some seem to interpret the GPU temp monitor differently:

I haven't done extensive testing but:

169.04 shows my temps around 53 on idle

179.48 and 186.03 shows them around 64 on idle

My suspicions were raised that the temp differences were caused by interpretation (and not background processes, etc.) by switching from 169.04 to 186.03 and back. From 169.04 to 186.03, my temp rose instantaneously from 53 C to 62 C as measured by RivaTuner, and on the reverse switch it dropped from 65 C to 57 C.

So my question is, is 169.04 (and perhaps other old drivers) doing something more efficient with the GPU fan? If not, which one is the accurate one?
