Failure to resume from suspend on Dell Vostro 1500 with 8600m GT and Windows 7

I am having a problem with my laptop where if I put it into suspend mode while it is on battery power and resume it on AC power, or vice-versa, the resume fails. The screen displays low-res, flashing, corrupted graphics, but nothing else happens. Suspend and resume work fine as long as I resume the laptop in the same power mode it was suspended in. I am currently on nvidia driver version 196.86, but I have tried several versions including 197.xx. Does anyone have any idea how I might fix this?

Turned out it was being caused by the BIOS password. That tried to change the video mode on resume, which seemed to screw up the Windows 7 resume process.
