Overclocking causes screen to turn off/on, slows down until reboot

Hi all,

I have a problem with overclocking my GTS250M. I'm using the nVidia Inspector software, and my overclock doesn't hit temps past 80 Celsius.

However, sometimes while playing games my screen will turn off and then on again. From that point onwards, speeds won't exceed 20fps when previously the game was running at 45fps. It doesn't help if I exit the game, I have to restart my whole computer.

What could be going on?

For reference, I turn GPU clock from 450MHz to 540MHz, and Memory Clock from 790 to 880MHz.

The driver is crashing because of too fast clock - or overheating component even if the temp seems to be OK. Have had the same happening in the past. Another driver may behave better - some trial and error needed.
