Can someone please help me out? I have a Dell Inspiron 1440 laptop running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. There is no entry for "Sound, Video and Game Controllers" in Device Manager. There is a "High Definition Audio Controller" entry under System Devices. It is using the Windows 7 default drivers. The System Bios reports an IDT 92HD81 Audio Controller. The Hardware Ids and Compatible Ids listed in Details for the High Definition Audio Controller are as follows:

Hardware Ids

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_293E&SUBSYS_02CF1028&REV_03

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_293E&SUBSYS_02CF1028

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_293E&CC_040300

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_293E&CC_0403

The Compatible Id's are:

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_293E&REV_03

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_293E

PCI\VEN_8086&CC_040300

PCI\VEN_8086&CC_0403

PCI\VEN_8086

PCI\CC_040300

I cannot find any driver anywhere that will install on this machine. The Dell driver R264250 which is supposed to be for this machine returns the message:

"The hardware detected is not supported by this IDT software package. The install will be aborted."

Please help if you can. Thanks.

check if the "High Definition Audio Controller" entry has a yellow exclamation mark on it. that's a telltale sign that there's a problem.

try removing the "High Definition Audio Controller" entry from Device Manager by clicking Uninstall and then click Action > Scan for hardware changes.

that should make Windows 7 redetect the high definition audio controller and install the required hdaudbus.sys file into the Windows\system32\drivers folder. when high definition audio controller file is installed and configured properly, you should be able to install the needed IDT HD Audio driver.
