!!Please Help!! Aperture size problem!!

Hello.

I´ve a little problem and unfortunetely no clue!

I´m using a presario b1011, P4, 2,8 MHz, SiS 648 Mainboard (!!!) and a GeForce 5200 Go 64MB and downloaded the latest AGP and modded detonaor together with the .inf.

Then I changed the "further video settings" up to max speed etc.

After I ran the 3D Mark 2001 SE benchmark.

The result: only 5912 points!! The game performance is quite bad as well.

If I look up the benchmark system info (Motherboard Info/AGP capabilities) it is written, that the notebook uses 0 MB Aperture Size!!

I thought the Aperture size is always half of the RAM memory?????

But why? And what exactly is the Aperture Size?

A friend of mine has a Gericom, P4, 2,6 MHz, Intel Mainboard (!!!) and a GeForce 5250Go 64MB.

His notebook uses the usual 252MB Aperture Size.

I didn´t find a way to change the Aperture size in BIOS, like you can easily do in desktop computers.

Markus,

The 56.5x drivers are the slowest for 3Dmark 2k1, these drivers are for DX9 so 3DMark 2k3 will do better.

If your comparing try a 4x.xx driver to get the best result in 3DMark 2k1.

You machine should get around 6900 points.

Aperture size is not adjustable on Laptops, it should default to 1/2 the system RAM upto a certain point.

Make sure that the Chipset drivers are installed properly and are the latest and are for the Mobile not desktop version.

doublecheck the aperture size with aida32 (motherboard|chipset|AGP Properties).

Aperture size is the size which can be given to GPU from MainMemory through AGP Bus when onboard GraphicsMemoory (in your case 64MB) is to less to render sth.

I also think that sth. is wrong with your AGP driver. Try uninstalling and installing again:

- AGP: removed due to wrong version

- IDE: removed due to wrong version

Also install DX 9.0b again.

btw the 648 chipset supports FastWrite, so if everything is o.k. with your stability, enable FastWrite for the GPU, too (in the ControlPanel).

First of all thank you very much for the promt reply. I was quite surprised!

I tried to check the Aperure size with the Aida32 tool, but I couldn´t find any explicit informations. Only about the AGP (8x) memory which is 64 MB, Fast Write and Side Band Addressing are enabled.

Then I downloaded the new IDE and AGP drivers, reinstalled the old AGP driver and tried to reinstall the new one which did not work at all. (Is this a modded driver especially for notebooks?)

The installation aborts with the prompt "UpdateDriverForPlugAndPlayDevices:Error" ???

So I still use the old version 7.2.0.1160.

Any suggestions?

The new IDE driver works properly!!! (I didn´t uninstalled the old 2001 one beforehand). But still 0 MB Aperture size listed in the benchmark sys.info.

I actually don´t care about benchmark results, what bothers me is the bad game performance.

I now use the 53.06 detonator. Does an 4x.xx one increase the performance or just the benchmark result?

If so, which one do you prefer or recommend?

hi,

guck bei AIDA unter "motherboard", dann "chipset" dann "AGP Properties". Da siehst Du die Aperture Size.

Egal war nen Versuch wert.

I reinstalled the old AGP driver and tried to reinstall the new one which did not work at all

Ich glaub Du hast mich missverstanden. Der alte Treiber muss sauber weginstalliert und NICHT danach gleich wieder rueberinstalliert werden. Da irgendwas eh mit Deiner Config nicht stimmt, wuerde ich das Deinstallieren des ALTEN AGP Treibers mit einem Neustart verbinden oder es sogar im abgesicherten Modus probieren, wenn er zu hartnaecknig ist. Nach dem Neustart, warte bis XP die neue Hardware gefunden hat, und wenn er nach nem Treiber fragt, dann drueck abbrechen (bei mehreren Nachfragen mehrmals "abbrechen" druecken).

Erst jetzt, nachdem XP sich mit der neuen Hardware beruhigt hat. und die HD nich mehr roedelt, kannst Du den neuen AGP teriber installieren. Danach auch wieder Neustart.

Und dann (nach dem Neustart) gleich DX9.0b hinterher. Und eventl., wenn verlangt, noch nen Neustart.

Ich denke dieser "UpdateDriverFor... bla" Fehler hat was mit der falschen Reihenfolge zu tun, die Du angewandt hast. Du kannst nicht Deinen alten urspruenglichen drueberinstallieren und danach ohne Neustart einen noch neueren Treiber rueberinstallieren. Diese Chipsatz Treiber sind sehr kritisch zu betrachten. Da muss alles sstimmen bei der Installation. bla. Sonst gibts Chaos, und da eh schon irgendwas nich stimmt bei Deiner Machine Gameperformance maessig, wollen wir dit Chaos nich noch vergroessern.

(einen weiteren Unterpunkt zu AGP Properties gibts nicht,...vielleicht liegts an der deutschen Variante??)

(ich suche mal nach ner englischen Version, vielleicht hab ich ja mehr Glück,.. ein größeres Problem ist immer noch der verflixte AGP treiber, der sich nicht so recht installieren lassen will..)

deshalb schreibe ich jetzt mal Schritt für Schritt auf, was ich gemacht hab,...wahrscheinlich stell ich mich auch einfach viel zu blöd an....

1. im Gerätemanager- Systemgeräte- SiS Accelerated Graphics Port : alten (7.2.0.1160) Treiber deinstalliert

2. Neustart

3. nach Neustart, Meldung: "Legen Sie CD..SiS Installation Disc (AGP) in Lauwerk...ein" ---- dann auf Abbrechen

4. Meldung "Legen Sie CD..NVIDIA Windows 2000/XP Driver Library Installation Disk 1 in Laufwerk ein" -----wieder auf Abbrechen, da ich die, wie auch die erste (AGP bla..) gar nicht hab

(Hier hat er also keine neue Hardware ekannt,...der Sack!!)

[im Gerätemanager (gelbes Ausrufezeichen bei Grafikkarte und bei Systemgeräte/PCI-PCI-Brücke (Treiber für dieses Gerät wurden nicht installiert Code 28);

außerdem fehlt unter Systemgeräte/ SiS AGP (hab ich ja auch deinstalliert);

als Grafikkarte wird Videokontroller (VGA-kompatibel) angezeigt (keine Treiberdetails o.ä.)]

nun gut, da er nun nix automatisch erkannt hat, habe ich jetzt versucht den neuen AGP 117 treiber manuell zu installieren

(gesaugtes agp117.rar file entpackt und setup launcher ausgeführt)

Ergebnis ist Abbruch der Installation mit der selben Fehlermeldung.

Nun, weil ich eigentlich auch nicht mehr so recht weiter wusste, habe ich den gemod 53.06 detonator samt .inf installiert.

Bei der Installation wurde ich dann darauf aufmerksam gemacht, dass doch bestimmte Dateien bereits vorhanden und neuer als die jetzt zu kopierenden seien.

Also habe ich gutgläubig auf alle beibehalten geklickt, was wohl sicher verkehrt war. Resigniert,.egal,...Neustart.

Nach Neustart, ohh welch Wunder, Meldung: "Legen Sie CD Installation Disk AGP ein". Also abermals Abbruch, mir bleibt ja gar nichts anderes übrig.

Im Gerätemanager wird nun zumindest die Grafikkarte wieder erkannt, das gelbe Ausrufezeichen unter Systemgeräte/PCI-PCI-Brücke allerdings, leuchtet mir noch signalisierend entgegen.

Ohne damit zu rechnen das es jetzt funktionieren könnte hab ich nun nochmals versucht den AGP117 Treiber zu installieren, was erwartungsgemäß mit derselben Fehlermeldung zum Ende kam.

Irgendwie habe ich kaum noch Hoffnung dieses vermurkste System wieder zum laufen zu bringen, weshalb ich wohl einer Formatierung entgegensehe.

Falls es doch noch Vorschläge gibt, wäre ich dankbar. Wenn nicht, schreib mir doch bitte ganz kurz, aber detailiert, was ich nach der "Endlösung" genau machen, bzw installieren und updaten soll.

den installations scheiss krieg ich in kurzfassung nicht mehr hin. Fakt ist: gibts kein AGP, gibt's auch keine AGP-Graka, deshalb gelbes "!"

Der AGP muss unbedingt erstmal entweder mit default XP Treiber oder mit Deiner alten SIS AGP Treiber version zxum Laufen gebracht werden, bevor DU die neue AGP117 .exe drueberinstallieren kannst. Vorher noch den NVDIA treiber deinstallieren ueber Systemst.|Software.

Select the size of the Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP) aperture. The aperture is a portion of the PCI memory address range dedicated for graphics memory address space. Host cycles that hit the aperture range are forwarded to the AGP without any translation.

Memory-mapped, graphics data structures can reside in a Graphics Aperture to main DRAM memory. This aperture is an address range defined by the APBASE and APSIZE configuration registers of the MCH-M device #0. The APBASE register follows the standard base address register template as defined by the PCI 2.1 specification. The size of the range claimed by the APBASE is programmed via ?backend? register APSIZE (programmed by the chip-set specific BIOS before plug-and-play session is performed). APSIZE allows the BIOS software to pre-configure the aperture size to be 4 MB, 8 MB, 16 MB, 32 MB, 64 MB, 128 MB or 256 MB. By programming APSIZE to specific size, the corresponding lower bits of APBASE are forced to ?0? (behave as hardwired). The default value of APSIZE forces an aperture size of 256 MB. The aperture address range is naturally aligned.

Accesses within the aperture range are forwarded to the main DRAM subsystem. The MCH-M will translate the originally issued addresses via a translation table maintained in main memory. The aperture range should be programmed as non-cacheable in the processor caches.

Note: Plug-and-play software configuration model does not allow overlap of different address ranges. Therefore, the AGP Graphics Aperture and AGP Memory Address Range are independent address ranges that may abut, but cannot overlap one another.

Just an idea: it "seems" that your BIOS is not properly programmed (APSIZE). Ask the support of HP for a proper BIOS and tell them i send you. Just joking.

hab die nötigen treiber in so ziemlich jeder reihenfolge de/installiert,- ohne änderung der aperture.., daafür rund 7200 benchmarkpunkte,...

s´läut nun alles n´bissel flüssiger, aber immer noch nicht befriediegend

wenn ich zeit hab, wende ich mich mal an den HP "Support".

falls die mir helfen können, was ich leicht anzweifle, wirds geposted.

neu installiert hab ich DX, IDE, GraKa (53.06)

aufs formatieren hab ich verzichtet, dafür npaar mal defragmentiert..

das mit dem agp 117 treiber hat auch nach mehrmaligen auspobieren nicht funktionieren wollen (hab mir den sogar von mehreren seiten runtergeladen,- installation bricht immer mit derselben, nichtssagenden meldung ab)

woher auf einmal all das? Werde das sofortigst ausprobieren, d.h. sobald ich wieder die Möglichkeit dazu hab (zZ leicht im Stress).

Frag mal COMPAQ! keine ahnung. Auf jeden erschienen die Treiber erst am 19. Maerz.

hat ne weile gedauert,...

also die treiber funktionieren tatsächlich, das mit der aperture size allerdings nicht wirklich (keine veränderung). immerhin läuft das ding insgesammt jetzt stabiler, d.h die game performance ist besser, ..ich würde fast sagen, dass da mehr jetzt eh nicht rauszuholen ist,..auch die ladezeiten haben sich nBissi verkürzt,..obwohl das, im zuge euphorischer begeisterung über das funktionieren der neuen treiber, auch nur subjektiv wahrgenommen wurde. den benchmarktest ließ die neuinstallation eher unbeindruckt.
