:: OPEN ISSUES

As with every released driver, version 66.77 of the Release 65 driver has open issues and enhancement requests associated with it. What follows is a list of issues that are either not fixed or not implemented in this version. Some problems listed may not have been thoroughly investigated and, in fact, may not be NVIDIA issues. Others will have workaround solutions. (copy&pasted from the official release notes)

  • Windows XP: DualView Performance mode doesn't work. A fix for this issue will be included in the next driver release.
  • GeForce FX 5200/5700/5750 Ultra, Windows XP: Shadow effects in Splinter Cell do not display properly. This is not an NVIDIA bug.
  • Windows XP/2000: Clone mode may be set for the GeForce FX 5600. This setting causes a drop in the performance of 3D applications. The workaround is to use the NVIDIA control panel to reset the system to standard mode from clone mode.
  • Windows XP, GeForce FX 5950 Ultra: Homeworld2 antialiased performance is slow. This is not an NVIDIA bug, but is a known issue with the application. A game
patch 1.1 is available at ftp://ftp.sierra.com/pub/sierra/homeworld2/
    updates/homeworld2_update_en_10_11.exe .
  • Windows XP, GeForce FX 5600: Enter key does not perform the intended actions in the NVIDIA control panel. A fix for this issue will be included in the next driver release.
  • Quadro FX 1100, Windows XP: Mouse pointer is blurry when moved to the right side of the LCD. A fix for this issue will be included in the next driver release.
  • Windows XP, Quadro FX 3000, T221 Display: Windows MediaPlayer becomes pink/green with two T221 monitors rotated. A fix for this issue will be included in a future driver release.
  • Windows XP: Double-clicked Outlook messages sometimes end up underneath other windows. A fix for this issue will be included in a future driver release.
  • Quadro4 980XGL/Quadro FX1000, Windows 2000: Altair Engineering HyperMesh6.0 has problems with model contour color and rubber band operation. A fix for this issue will be included in a future driver release.
  • GeForce FX, Windows ME/Windows XP: With 4x (or greater) antialiasing enabled, the Options menu text in the game Spellforce appears only when the mouse cursor hovers over it. A fix for this issue will be included in the next driver release.
  • Windows ME: CodeCult benchmark does not run properly. This is not an NVIDIA bug.
  • GeForce FX, Windows ME: Gunmetal Demo intro movie does not display properly. This is not an NVIDIA bug.

  • SYMPTOMS
If you log off a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer or a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer, you experience the following symptoms:? Roaming profiles are not saved to the profile server.
? Event entries are not added to the Application log.
? If you are using the Microsoft User Profile Hive Cleanup Service tool, the tool does not log the log-off process.
? The following messages are listed in the Userenv.log file:
USERENV(1b0.7f0) 16:37:20:209 UnloadUserProfileP: Wait succeeded. In critical section.
USERENV(1b0.7f0) 16:37:20:360 UnloadUserProfileP: Didn't unload user profile, Ref Count is 2
  • CAUSE
This problem occurs if you installed the Winxp_2k_56.72 NVIDIA driver that was released on April 1, 2004. This version of the NVIDIA driver loads the profile two times. When the user logs off, the first profile is unloaded. However, the other copy of the profile is still loaded.

:: ISSUES RESOLVED

Significant issues resolved in driver version 56.72 (copy&pasted from the official release notes)

  • GeForce FX 5200/FX5900/FX5950 Ultra, Windows XP: Far Cry (Patch 3) water is rendered incorrectly.
  • GeForce FX 5200/FX 5600, Windows XP: Star Wars Galaxies performance is poor.
  • Windows XP: Presentation Director eight-bit test screen is not displayed correctly.
  • GeForce FX 5200/FX 5900/FX 5950 Ultra, Windows XP: "Play On My TV" option within the NVIDIA panel is not available when playing a media file.
  • Windows XP: OpenGL viewperf crashes or is extremely slow if the Physical Address Extension boot option is enabled.
  • Gameprofiles: Name of the .exe for Return to Castle Wolfenstein profile is wrong.
  • Apocalyptica crashes when 3D stereo is activated and then deactivated.
  • GeForce FX 5950 Ultra, Windows XP: In the game Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow, white flashes occur on a character with antialiasing enabled.
  • GeForce FX 5950 Ultra,Windows XP: Fogging effect is not applied to distant trees in the game Far Cry.

Explanation of StarStorm driver set from Xaero001 (creator)

Currently there are 3 versions of Starstorm drivers, they are:

XQ ? Xtream Quality : The drivers have been tweaked to provide the Maximum Quality available and at the cost of a small Performance hit but owners of the high-end cards shouldn?t notice much loss. (These are recommended if you want the eye candy to look as clear and in high detail as possible while still maintaining optimal FPS) Once known as the Q driver.

X ? Xtream Quality / Performance: The drivers have been tweaked to provide a performance increase and a Quality increase but not a big one. These will provide the best of both world?s but the increase in the IQ and Performance in a minimal one. These though are still slightly faster 0and have a higher IQ that the original Nvidia drivers.

(These are recommended for the new to StarStorm user or average user who wants some game fix?s and wants a small increase in IQ / Performance without getting a Hit in either) Once known as the P driver.

B ? Benchmarking / Pure Performance: The drivers have been tweaked to provide a big boost in Performance with a big hit in IQ. (These are intended for increasing Benchmark scores and to provide some performance for the low-end cards which need it when it comes to graphics intence games)(If you use these drivers expect games to look desolated and sometimes crappy looking but run smooth)(Highly recommended for non-gamers who just want overall better system performance)

v.A03 Dell Video Driver 56.72 WHQL & Quadro Certified for Quadro FXGo700 here (Nov 04, 2004) -

ftp://ftp.dell.com/video/R82002.EXE

The inf has a couple lines for the Quadro FXGo1000 as well; not being an INF expert, I have no idea if this'll work on a Quadro FXGo1000 or not as far as Workstation apps, TV-Out, Standby/Resume/Hibernate etc.

I downloaded the DELL release and repacked the driver, so it now includes the DELL .INF, .CAT and localisation files in the normal driver. WEill upload later.

UPDATE - Just installed this on the Quadro FXGo1000; it has all the NV36GL settings, everything works well, and the temperature of the GPU dropped 5-7 degrees.

Great news! :)

:)

Will you or your boys stay with that driver (if no problems arise)? The last you had if i remember right was the official 53.xx something for from DELL for Precision Laptop, right?

Yup...this seems to be as stable as Dell 53.82, but the temperature drop & finally, support for the NV36 is nice...

Is anyone still using these drivers?

With Halflife 2 I get strange white objects. It seems that objects below a certain darkness, like some walls in CS Source, and some objects like the health chargers etc in HL2 turn a strange white, along with weapons and ammo clips etc.

Is someone else getting this? Its sad becuase these drivers are virtually the only ones which even run on my ###### laptop, the others make everything so painfully slow!

Folks, is there any meaningful tweaks/improvements in the Dell released 56.72 (R82002)? I noticed the option for 'monitor scaling' is not available for this driver with the QFXGo1000 like other Dell drivers have.

I wonder why Dell only released this excellent driver for the QFXGo700 :)

Thanks.

don'tknow...I know you MUST know whether the Dell 56.72 is any different than the NV 56.72 or the laptopvideo2go 56.72... :)

Is it closer to the 'performance' or the 'quality' 56.72?

Thx; based on all of your suggestions, I think I'll stick with the highest 5x.xx series drivers...

By the way, what causes the startup flicker with 56.72?

Thx.

Could it be the overclocking page?

If you have already turned it off or set it to a clockspeed, I would say it is the driver, and trying newer or different drivers should fix it.

Why you want to use a driver this old I am not sure, as the newer drivers are all good performers mostly, they are fast, stable, and have more features than previous drivers, and they have less bugs, like the flickering/green screen stuff at startup...

We have discussed this stuff before too, it is caused by something like the driver referencing something about the graphics card and/or monitor.

Some drivers do this differently than others, so you get a flicker or a green screen.

Anyway I am off to bed now.

Hope you have fun testing "almost 1 year old drivers." :)

Us modern folk will stick with 66.xx+....

Knew you'd have a reply Bill... :)

I don't have CoolBits installed/enabled, so the OC doesn't seem to be an issue.

The reason I stick with 5 series "year old drivers" is because no 6 series or 7 series drivers work for me in clone mode/video mirroring with a connected TV (massive lag & stutter issues).

Plus, I'm an old feller not concerned with using the highest numbering scheme :)

AND, I don't worry about getting higher performance with the "latest & greatest" drivers, as i'll get all that with the QFXGo1400 in a couple weeks or so :P

If you are not concerned with all of that other stuff, why are you concerned about a harmless flashing screen at startup?

Also, does anybody know why there is no "fast reply" button?

Was it removed to combat the spam?
