hello

thanks pieter for all your works

wanted to try your modded driver since a long time !

have done some test this week

have try 61.77 first : installation run good , cant run 3DMARK2003 , it crash

( lock-up , have to hold power button to re-boot ! )

next 56.72 : installation went good , 3DMARK2003 get 2589 , but DOOM3 run

really bad ( off focus disturb image ? )

also , the 56.72 driver offer many option ( with abreviation wich tell nothing about the specifiq file ? ) when un-compress , wich one is wich ?

i have run all those test with bios A02 . after reading some advice , i have loaded

the A09 , and will try other driver , but not sure if it will make any difference ?

so i had to go back to DELL original 45.81 ! with a poor 2155 3DMARK03

anybody have suggestion ?

thanks

About the different versions in that driver you should install the one in the folder that has no letters on the end, just plain 56.72, the other ones are Starstorm drivers, you should make sure everything like your BIOS is up to date.

Also you should try some other 50s drivers, like 53.03 maybe? Or some 56.xx ones, if you see a driver that has a NVDM INF, that is a Dell INF, you should try those.

The ones that say they have OEM infs have that.

If you have any questions just ask.

Also, Welcome to the forums! :)

Unless I am sleeping I should be able to answer your questions pretty quickly, I have a habit of talking to much lol.

I try not to spam though.

^^^the above is an exapmle of talking to much.. :)

I m sorry my first reply was a bit short .. it doesnt explain much .. plus I m a quest.

the problem with Dell 8600 and the FX5650 is that all the BIOS after A04 have a different CPU fan regulation.

So you will notice a slow down of everything .. even the GPU .. after the fan for the processor kicks in.

This is because the fan for the CPU is triggered by a higher tempertature than in the A04 BIOS. This is pretty bad for gaming since its triggered too late .. but u wont notice this in undemanding games like Half life :)

After I also expierinced problems with Doom3 and this setup:

A09 BIOS

53.03 drivers ... which are the fastes drivers for the inspiron 8600

I decided to update the gfx drivers .. (knowing that they re usually slower for this gfx card) I installed the 62.20 .. with a little increase in performance .. but the fan was still a problem. So I got a software to control my fan and always have it on high blast .. http://www.diefer.de/i8kfan/index.html .. this helped but the processor fan problem still accured

I found out that the BIOS settings for the fans were changed after A04 .. so I reverted back to A04... which solved the fan problem .. note that it is advisable to run the fan control app that I mentioned for games.

the FPSs in DOOM3 increased again .. but since the 62.20 are Directx9.c drivers I downloaded the new direct X ... and there I had it :) .. a much faster doom

40 FPS on average with action on screen ... and around 60 in other areas .. note that it still can drop to 20 on HUGE demanding scenes.

The speed step technology on the 8600 is also a little problem sometimes since the speed of the laptop changes .. there is a program on the diefer web page which is called SpeedswitchXP .. this also helps the performance.

.. overall it fixes the doom issue.

I posted this in technical, but now I see that I should've posted it here. Do i get this crash because of the A09 bios? So if i downgrade to A03 it should solve the problem with the 61.77 driver as well and the crash?

Btw, 3dmark worked fine.. got a bit above 2500 if i remember correctly.

Yea.. The 61.77 crashes the comp.. The watchdog file is below.

This is with pieters inf 30.23

oh and what are your settings on the speedwitchXP? :P

Hmm I usually have the Speedswitch configuered so the CPU uses its max speed at all the times ... but I just noticed I had the CPU speed lowered

my setting were

fan throttle : 85

forced throttle : 90

(I did this because I thouht it would solve the Fan issue with the A09 BIOS)

I m going to revert it back to max performance and see what its like in DOOM3 now .. should be even better since I m not using the A09 BIOS anymore

so no crashes on the 62.20 with A03 bios is the best?

oh and what are your settings on the speedwitchXP?

Yes I would definetly say so .. I never had problems with these mod drivers but 53.03 always was the fastes for Directx but it isnt as good for OpenGL as I found out.

thanks to all

GUEST : can you run the timedo1 ( use the console )

how to use console and tweak DOOM3

i run this demo just after the doom3 finish to load , so GPU heat/BIOS should not

be related

and show us your result ( also watch my doom3 benchmark in the bench section )

DOOM3 bench tread

i only get between 12 and 16 with that demo... really bad

i also have find your directX9C files , but i dont know if i should load them ?

about 3dmark03 crashing , i was using BIOS A02 anyway and it did crash well

i thing thats what could get me a big improvement is to go back to initial VIDEO BIOS driver ? because before i change it ( video driver too ) i use to get 2700 with

3dmark03 ! ( not sure if its because of revision 340 of 3dmark03 ? )

anybody have the dell original video bios Ao1 for dell inspiron around

( not available on dell previous driver )

as seen in the DOOM3 thread

i have nice result ( 3dmark03 2655 and doom3 27 FPS ) with both 6171 and 6220

-XPhome SP1 original from DELL ( why use XPpro anyway ????? )

with all update since august04 from microsoft.

-latest video bios from DELL

-i have BIOS A09

-have load directX9C

-almost no permanent apps runnig in the task bar, wich use CPU...

-also update chipset ( directly from intel ) , new from july04, but i think this

has reduced my performance ?

i'm still pretty sure that system bios not supposed to affect short term

GPU performance , and the NVIDIA tab mention there is no warnig before

134 deg celcius on the GPU !
