You may have noticed that the forums were down over the last 36 hours or so. :P

This was caused by our Hosts upgrading to PHP 4.3.10 (tech talk) this had a disasterous effect with our database.

Not our hosts fault they thought they were being good by updating so quickly.

After numerous attempts to restore an older backup and other tricks, Teraphy found the bug was with the PHP prog and the Linux server.

Our hosts have gone back to v4.3.9 and all is well again. :)

A big thanks to those involved in helping to get this sorted. :)

And apologies for any inconveniance caused.

I did make a new page for the website, I'll update when I get a chance.

Seeing I couldn't answer any questions on the forums except a tonne of PM's, I had spare time on my hands.

Enjoy

Actually, I think they should have notified you in advance of the PHP upgrade. Otherwise, the host would be getting calls every 10 seconds...

I agree. Some warning like an info page on when updates will occur would even be helpful. Then there is time to alert of any potential problems. This wasn't bad.

The error appears due to using an old Zend Optimizer. From what people on the Invision Boards are saying.

The server hosts are updating Zend Optimizer to v2.5.7.

This will then allow them to update PHP to 4.3.10.

Zend had to be upgraded to v2.5.7 as the older version had big issues with PHP 4.3.10

This problem wasn't known at the time and was only discovered after the new version of PHP was released.

The new version of PHP has a whole heap of bug fixes including some security.

So the Web hosts are quite keen to upgrade (for good reasons).

Hopefully this will all go smoothly.

Hope this explains what happened over the last few days.

Sorry Pieter and Teraphy, haven't ran forum software under Unix yet, only BBS software and mailing lists but what is Zend Optimizer actually used for? Is it actually needed for things like IPB and PHPBB or is it optional? It's my turn in this 6 hour cycle to post.. :)

From what i *read* 3 days ago, it optimizes the php database and compresses it to a smaller size. There is a webpage zend.com ?

Yeah, Pieter posted about it in our *other* forum...

Anyways, PhpBB seems to have a virus which was the cause of the upgrades but notification should still be given first as a courtesy...
