Well, maybe I can contribute in this thread. As a tinkerer and proud owner of several Laptos of Toshiba 5200er series, I've nearly made everything with them. I have tons of pics from disassembling (I can show you what ever part you want) to static pictures. Of course I have many, many expierence in repairing them. When I visited your website for the first time, searching for a new video driver, I found this wonderful thread! :) My goal is creating a stand-alone website containing all information to this type of Toshiba Satellite Laptops. Unfortunately I am a busy student and don't really have time, starting a complete new project. However, I think many of you are very expierenced with this device, so maybe we can work together. I will give you a further explaination of things, what I plan and a structure of my content I want to cover later on. I am going to find the optimal video driver for the Toshiba Laptop 5200er series using a GeForce FX 5600 Go. In his table about his recommendation about the optimal driver for each nVidia family, he uses for measurement FMS ((full mobile support), which consists of: - energy saving (PowerMizer and suspend modes) - multiple Outputs: dual screen and TV-out - custom resolution and aspect ratios MCE - Microsoft Windows Media Center Edition (???) Stereo - what ever this means WHQL My goals for the display driver are: - speedy video driver with (as possible) no issues in video rendering - concurrent ability to use TV-Out/external VGA(CRT) and Laptop Display (does this work for you via F5 hotkey?) with different! resolutions in general (has FX5600 a second RAM-DAC for doing this?) - driver integrated PowerMizer function - suspend(hibernation) and standby support - DirectX 9.0c capability - MCE and WHQL is less important On my personal hardware-tuned Toshiba Satellite 5200-903 (rare Intel Pentium 4M 2.6GHz) I ran MadOnion 3DMark 2003 (last edition) with different nVidia driver version noticing only minimal varieties in benchmark results (about 1425 points with drivers greater than v60) On testing Earth 2160 I noticed severe problems on video rendering during the complete game play (not playable, full of unwanted pixels) with drivers greater than v67, although I believed, this should be a good compatible driver. Sorry, I can't give you precise information, because I tested this a while ago. What I know, is driver lower than 67 worked (clear video rendering). Later on, I will add detailed information. Maybe someone else recognized the type of problem, too. Questions: 1. What does nVidia Stereo support exactly mean? 2. Reading the initial recommendation for the video driver, I can't agree using v84.25, because it didn't work flawlessly, i.e. with game Earth 2160. Which drivers do you use? 3. Has ever someone tested the gain in using PowerMizer in battery mode? Because you can only set this option to enabled or disabled? I just bought a parts 5205-S705 off of eBay for the screen (mine was bad) and as a bonus it had a P4M 2.4 processor (mine was only a 2.0 so I upgraded) and a style bay TV tuner (part No. PA3289U-1ETC) I cannot find any documentation for the TV tuner. There are only two inputs, one with what looks like two upside down capitol L's back to back, and the other has a circle with an arrow pointing into it. Does anyone have any info about these tuners? First of all after SP1 it takes about 10gb of space which is considerable since we only have 80gb. I had troubles installing graphics driver, tried several but could not succeed. Maybe I needed to try some more drivers but I got tired of it. Other devices were fine like sound card, infrared etc. I couldn't use cPax so you will not be able to use cPad if you have it. Anyway after 3 days I had enough and went back to XP. Maybe if you have patience you can set things right but still it runs slow and takes up so much space. It works, but not recommended. I understand that the video driver is the major compatibility problem for Vista installation. I had a similar experience when I tried to install Vista RC3 in a Toshiba SAT S320 with ATI drivers that were incompatible. Seeing that the vidio nVidia driver came from Microsoft I assumed that there could be a chance to be compatible with Vista also. The reason I needed Vista is the way they handle magnification, since the 1600x1200 resolution is very big for my eyes (I wear glasses to use computer screen) and this high res poses me great stress in my eyes. I have adjusted from properties window the high dpi and big fonts, but due to the inherent limitations of XP this is not always successfull. I am finishing now XP installation as usual ..... I got this machine from a friend for its excellent multimedia properties that I will try to exploit as soon as I finish the clean installation I started yesterday. As for Vista I have a spare 60GB disk that I will use as a test bench when I have some more spare time. Regards PS by the way XP SP3 already has a micosoft nVidia driver for 440 but with 1588x1200 res and therefore I could not install any previous driver with the correct resolution PS1 Wrong I can install the original Toshiba nVidia driver which restores res to norm. But I can not install any of the newer drivers such as 72.12, 72.13 or 72.14 giving error that the hardware is not supported or similar. Any suggestion??? My problem starts yesterday with a new software on my Toshiba Satellite 5200 with a Nvidia Geforce4 460 go. This software needs OpenGl 2.0. So I need a new driver for my 460go. The newest version at Toshiba is 36.38!! Nvidia offers no drivers for xxxGo. So I am very happy to find laptopvideo2go. Now I am reading here for hours. But I found very little information about OpenGl support. I understood that there is no "best version". But which Version is tested for this Notebook and has OpenGl 2.0 Support? Anyway you can install any driver after INF modification so it doesn't hurt to try until you find a driver that's compatible with your application. I have updated with SP1, SP2 and SP3 and other relevant MS updates, and also the "Tools and Utilities" CD that the computer came with. However the firewire IEEE 1394 connections appears not to work. The computer does not see any connected device (like external harddisk). No error messages. Questions: 1. Any ideas to search the error? 2. On the "Tools and Utilities" CD, where is the IEEE 1394 driver located? Can't identify it. Or, is it in the Microsoft software? 3. Can the driver be downloaded sepaerately somewhere (for free)? Dragon_king Posted October 15, 2008 Report Share Posted October 15, 2008 (edited) Firstly; kickass website - incredibly useful :) Secondly, I was given an s5100-603 and it did not include the original install disks (wouldnt use them even if I did have them because they format the disk to FAT32 which isnt very useful for a lot of windows applications). I managed to find this website and basicly everything is up and working. Exept for the SubLCD screen at the front and the media buttons. Ive seen and tried the RemoteX utility, but it doesnt work for WMP - which is wat i prefer to use. I was wondering if anyone had the original Toshiba Controls software for my model. I've looked on the Toshiba website and they are just maddeningly not useful. :) Also I was wondering if theres any way to take apart the monitor section of this laptop because i think a wire may have come loose because the GFX keeps spazzing out every so often. If by 'spazzing' out you mean a blurring screen with lots of lines and colours then it sounds like the notorious faulty 440 go graphics cards - these cards were all poorly soldered in a malaysian factory. You will have to replace it (not cheap- probably worth more than the PC is today) or try to re-solder the memory chips with a heat gun, not easy- but it has been done. Sorry, there is no other option. For more info you can search the internet forums where a great debate has raged with north american owners who are furious with Toshiba for there refusal to help owners with what has become an alomost universal problem with these machine as they get older.
