Some INF questions...

Hi,

I have a couple of questions regarding your modded INF's. I checked the FAQ and did a couple of searches, but didn't see the answer.

In looking thru the modded INF for the newly-released 81.89's, for example, I saw this entry:

;Enable this for Centrino/Dothan based CPU based laptops
;HKR,, MapOSD4ToNV,[tab][/tab][tab][/tab][tab][/tab]    %REG_DWORD%,	3

Obviously, having a Centrino/Dothan-based laptop, I'm interested. I've never seen mention of this before, and wonder what it does.

Also, under the ";HKR settings by www.laptopideo2go.com" line, there are these settings:

;Smart Dimmer Controls
;HKR,, EnableBrightnessControl,[tab][/tab]  %REG_DWORD%,	1
;HKR,, PanelPWMFrequency,[tab][/tab][tab][/tab] %REG_DWORD%,	200
;HKR,, PanelBrightnessLimits,[tab][/tab]    %REG_DWORD%,	0x0000FF32

They're disabled by default. To enable the SmartDimmer, do I simply enable these settings? Or is there more to do? I realize that it probaly won't work with my NV41-based 6800Go, but I'd like to play around with it anyway.

And finally, further down in the INF I saw this group of lines:

HKLM,"SOFTWARE\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\NVTweak", QTwkEnableModeChangeWarning,[tab][/tab]   %REG_DWORD%, 0
HKLM,"SOFTWARE\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\NVTweak", QuickTweak,[tab][/tab][tab][/tab][tab][/tab][tab][/tab] %REG_DWORD%, 0x10020
HKLM,"SOFTWARE\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\NVTweak", ShowCustomModes,[tab][/tab][tab][/tab][tab][/tab][tab][/tab]%REG_DWORD%, 1
HKLM,Software\"NVIDIA Corporation"\Global\NVTweak, SmartDimmerEnable,[tab][/tab][tab][/tab][tab][/tab]   %REG_DWORD%, 1
HKLM,Software\"NVIDIA Corporation"\Global\NVTweak, SmartDimmerConfig,[tab][/tab][tab][/tab][tab][/tab]   %REG_DWORD%, 2
HKLM,"SOFTWARE\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\NVTweak", TwinViewCapsOverride,[tab][/tab][tab][/tab] %REG_DWORD%, 1
HKLM,"SOFTWARE\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\NVTweak\Defaults\OpenGL",DefaultSwapInterval, %REG_DWORD%, 1

What I noticed about these lines was the position of the quotation marks. Instead of having quotes around the entire registry branch, the two entries regarding SmartDimmer only have quotes around "NVIDIA Corporation." I'm in no way a coder, so if this is normal, I apologize for the stupid question. I was just curious if the position of the quotes would affect the implementation of the tweak in the affected lines.

Thanks for putting up w/the n00b questions!!

He must of really goofed with the quotes *runs away from Pieter's wrath*.

I think the quotes should be around the whole reg directory or something. (I'm not the super INF expert though either)

Anyway if you want to test the smart dimmer page go right ahead and remove the ; from in front of those 3 lines, that will enable them when you re-install. (the ; tells the driver to ignore that line, can put comments and text there)

Those are HKR tweaks so you have to re-install to take effect, the HKLM tweaks, the like others you mentioned, can be changed instantly from the registry editor, obviously you know where they are in the registry. (I hope :) )

The smart dimmer page (kinda new) has something to do with the screen's brightness settings among other things, your GF 6 card might support all that stuff, so try it and see how it goes and tell us about it. (if you use the search button, there is a thread or 2 about the page) Our older cards don't support it completely, so I can't tell you what to expect, Pieter did post a screenshot of it somewhere...

Now the mapOSD4 thing, I forget exactly what it controls, but the mapOSD ones are important, since you have the CPU you might one to try enabling it, it might fix a standby issue or something on your CPU. (clock throttling perhaps?)

Again, if you search for the topics on dothan CPUs you will find a better answer than I can give you.

Edit: A smart guy like you should have already replaced that 6800 go with the 7800 GTX go and mod the 9300 to an IXPS Gen2 170. (you need the IXPS Gen2 170 power adapter and battery though)

First question only enable this if you have problems with Standby etc

2nd question, smartdimmer can cause problems so I disabled it, but you can just enable it if you'd like to play with it.

3rd question, you can have quotes in 2 ways, you see both of them there.

I should really tidy that up to be the same as the others.

Good to see someone taking an interest on how things work, this is how I started :)

Bill--I had read a bit about SmartDimmer around here, and actually found this thread discussing it. It's mentioned there that it may only work correctly with NV44 and newer GPU's, so my NV41-based 6800 is probably out of luck. There's even someone in that thread with the same notebook/GPU as me that couldn't get it working, but I thought I'd play with it anyway! I don't mind messing around in the registry a bit, as long as I've exported a backup.

Oh, and believe me, I've watched with great interest over at notebookforums.com as people have done the 7800 GTX upgrade. I've already got the 9 cell battery, so I just need the power adapter and the card. Can't justify it to the wife quite yet, tho, as we just spent $1200 on this laptop as it is. I also want to do the pinmod of a Pentium M 725 to 2.13GHz. Both are on my list of "to do" items.

Mobilenvidia--Thanks for the answers. I won't enable the cpu tweak unless I have some kind of standby problem. I may play around with the SmartDimmer a bit tho, even just to see that it doesn't work with my system. And if "taking an interest in how things work" is anything like "deciding to try to build your own PC's," my wife will not be pleased!

Thanks to both of you for the replies.

OK, here's another one that may affect me:

;These lines should help go6600 and go6800 with speed reduction
;HKR,, RMPowerSupplyCapacity,[tab][/tab]    %REG_DWORD%,	2
;HKR,, PerfLevelSrc,[tab][/tab][tab][/tab][tab][/tab]   %REG_DWORD%,	0x3333
;HKR,, AllowMaxPerf,[tab][/tab][tab][/tab][tab][/tab]   %REG_DWORD%,	2

What does this mean? "Speed reduction"?

Thanks!

I have got to ask, what is this "pinmod" I have been hearing about?

About the speed reduction, modern nvidia laptop cards have a 2D (slow) and 3D (fast) clockspeed, plus there is powermizer to work with.

I think one of those cards must have had some problems with the clock speed adjustments, without those tweaks.

Rather than try to stumble thru an explanation of the pinmod, I'll just refer you here. You basically fool the motherboard into applying a 533MHz FSB to a 400MHz FSB processor. This turns a P-M 1.6 GHz processor (400x4) into a 2.13 GHz processor (533x4). You can get 400MHz FSB P-M's on E-Bay for about $140. Far cheaper than the retail 2.13GHz CPU.

Some go6600 had speed reductions with my modded INFs these settings seemed to help them get back to full speed again.

You are an eager Beaver :)
