andihit
Hi, I've downloaded the NVidia driver 82.12 here [// EDIT: I downloaded it here but with the standard inf], and tried to install it from the setup.exe - that didn't work. So I've tried it with the "Have Disk".. method (in the FAQ), and I can't see my card - "GeForce 4 488 Go" - So I edited the nv4_disp.inf file (The "; Localizable Strings" section _and_ the "[NVIDIA.Mfg]" - Section. Now it works, and I've installed it. But is that good for my card? Why don't do NVidia that? It's a card from NVidia! So, that's are my questions (the underlined sentences), cya andi Edited January 3, 2006 by andihit
LSudlow
Check out our FAQ section. Nvidia doesn't include mobile cards because laptop manufacturers like to customize drivers to fit the features of each laptop model. Unfortunately, they seldom try (or succeed) in keeping current with the latest drivers. That's why we're here. What you did is fine and won't hurt your machine at all, but we make modified infs for each driver to save you the work, frequently adding missing features in the process. Pieter's modified inf for your driver should be just below the driver download link.
andihit
Oh I see.. Thanks. One question I have: What's the difference between your Modded INF, Quality INF and Performance INF? I think ... Modded: Standard Quality: Good Imagequality Performance: Fast - is that true?
LSudlow
Yes, that's true. They make no changes that you can't make yourself by adjusting the sliders on the Performance page. It's just an easy way to preset your driver for your preferred level of performance.

mobilenvidia
Just as a matter of interest what did you add to the INF to make it work. This may in future INFs that have a GF4 go488.
andihit
(The entry is already in the list (modded inf file)) - but I have had the original NVidia inf. I've added %NVIDIA_NV18.DEV_0187.1% = nv4_mobile, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0187 to [NVIDIA.Mfg] and NVIDIA_NV18.DEV_0187.1 = "NVIDIA GeForce4 488 Go " to ; Localizable Strings cYa, andi
mobilenvidia
Those strings are in the modded INFs, so it should work. Did you replace the original INF (with driver) with modded one ?
andihit
Did you replace the original INF (with driver) with modded one ? No, at first I didn't, so it don't worked. Those strings are in the modded INFs, so it should work. Yes, now I replaced it with the modded one and now it works :) Is there any difference when I replace it with the modded one (the standard) or add these 2 strings manuelly? cYa, andi
mattman
The modded inf is going to include other tweaks, enable hidden pages etc. So it is probably the better way to go. There is more to Pieters inf's than just adding compatibility!

Not a bad effort, this is how I started by fiddeling around with drivers :)
