For those wanting to play Oblivion with a 64MB card, I've got a (barely) workable game with my 64MB Go5200 by running at 640x480, and turning down ALL video options to their lowest or disabled level. I also went into the Oblivion_default.ini file and set DoSpecularPass to 0. Also, in the nvidia control panel, set pre-rendering to 2 for most gameplay, but set it to 0 during setup. Setting it to 0 really helps mouse-lag during all the setup screens, but causes visual artifacts during actual gameplay. If you still get visual artifacts, with a pre-render setting of 2, you might have to change back to 3. And if it isn't obvious, you also need to turn off antialiasing.

If you only have a Shader Model 1 card, find the following line in the Oblivion_default.ini file:

bForce1XShaders=0

and change it to 1.

On the Performance page of the Nvidia Control Panel, turn off Antialiasing, Anisotropic Filtering, and Vsync. Set Image Settings to "High Performance." On the Additional D3D settings page, set Max Frames to Render Ahead to 0. I can't overstate this. 0 is your friend here, and is probably the single biggest factor in Oblivion performance I've found so far.

In the Oblivion.ini, under video options, make the following changes:

Set "HighQuality20Lighting" to 1 (Yes, it runs faster.)

Set "DoSpecularPass" to 0

Set "DrawShadows" to 0

Set "UseRefractionShader" to 0

In the General section:

Change "Interior Cell Buffer" to 128

Change "Exterion Cell Buffer" to 512

Under Oblivion's video options:

Set resolution to 640x480 (It's not as bad as you might think)

Set Texture Size to Small

Set all shadows to off

Set Bloom Lighting to off

Set Window Reflections to off

Set the Specular Distance slider to minimum.

Set Blood Decals to off

Also, for what it's worth, I'm using driver 71.44, which performs much better for me than 84.25.

Finally, don't be discouraged by the framerate in the starting jailcell. There's something there that really kills performance. It gets better once you get out into the tunnels.

Very good set. They show good performance in games, rock in FEAR (& hopefully ES4: Oblivion) and improve image quality from 84.20 drivers, but still not as good as 84.12 set.

PROS:

- performance in FEAR and Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

- slight increase in 3DMark 2001 and 2005 scores (but who cares anyway)

- texture filtering is almost on pair with 84.12s

CONS:

- still has a bug in NV control panel where you can't see a name of the game executable after you've created a new profile (present in 84.20 and 84.21 but not at 84.12 and lower)

- performance in Halo is a bit slower than with 83.20s

- texture filtering is almost on pair with 84.12s

I think that oblivion will not work with this system, because it needs at least 128 MB of Graphic-Memory. But the other components of this notebook are very good!

But I would be very happy, if I could play Oblivion.... Perhaps someone knows, whether it works on 64 MB Cards or not...

I'd hate for this to be a gumby question, but after updating to the 84.25 drivers, I can't seem to get the coolbits overclock section to come up. I've tried modding the registry (0x03), using the 'enable OC' reg file posted elsewhere on the site, and also using the nhanced inf with OC and other coolbits pages enabled, all haven't worked so far - is there something I'm missing?

I don't have oblivion yet, but I'm keen to tweak up the toshiba S2's 6600 (mine is 128Mb) default underclocking to get as many fps as I can.

The Coolbits/overclock section is always there for me, even with 84.25. Right-click on yer desktop, go to "Nvidia Display" and then scroll to "Clock Freqency Settings" to change the clock speeds. If you just felt that I was treating you as a noob, I'm sorry :)

In any case, I've installed 84.25, 84.21 and other drivers all night so far; in every case, I've always had the coolbits reg entry in there.

Interesting note for the rest of you folks; I didn't notice it until now but the recent drivers have increased my ability to overclock my original Go 6800 card (non-Ultra). I've had the lappy/card for well over a year and could only get a 347/643 or so overclock out of it. Something in the recent changes has me at 671/3 and 669 mem. Didn't notice it until tonight (had a few beers, decided to try OCing again, shrugs)

Now, I could suppose that it could the dec/feb directx changes but it's nice to see it any case :)

For the person having trouble with overclocking, try using a coolbits value of "3" instead of "0x03"

Oblivion won't run on cards that can't do shader model 2.0. So that's GeForce FX and Radeon 9500 and up. I tried it on my Radeon 8500 with Cat 6.3 and it just crashes when I try to load a save or even change video settings (and Radeon 8500 is the most flexible DX8 card out there with PS 1.4).

The game runs quite well on a 64MB R9600. Of course, a 9600 is a slow chip itself so you gotta turn the detail down a good bit.

Finally a well rounded driver set from NVidia! You can find the results in this thread .

It seems that NVidia is paying it's Forceware coders a lil' better these days, don't you think? :)

could anybody post a oblivion_default.ini which contains all settings to the minimum? I cant change the options, because the game crashes then, but i can play! the only thing is, that most of the enviroment is black... :)

I tried that with a Radeon 8500 and a NV 6800. It just crashes on both. 8500 can't run the game at all, just crashes. I think that option is a leftover from old code perhaps.
