I'm not sure how MSI or anyone got their hands on these drivers but they are not WHQL certified and really are a alpha-stage build by Nvidia so I highly suggest avoiding them for now as the 84.25 BETAs are far more stable and safer for your system. Just to let you guys in on some info as I've been using Nvidia drivers for a long time now, if Nvidia and nZone release a driver wether it be BETA or WHQL it more than likely is safe to use. Some OEMs get their hands on alpha stage drivers to do testing with and somehow they end up distributing these bad and sometimes dangerous drivers with their hardware.

The 84.26s have a nasty bug that will force your computer wether it be laptop or desktop to reboot after a BSoD. The bug appears when Full Color Ranges are used so even if you have it set at Automatic it will still cause errors and reboot your machine. I even couldn't get into Safe Mode to remove them and ended up having to use my Intel 900GMA to do the work with. Thank God for a secondary GPU! So if you don't have a secondary GPU do not even THINK about using these drivers.

I also highly would suggest the website administrators seriously consider removing these drivers as they are NOT safe to use and were never intended for ANY distribution by anyone.

We appreciate the head's-up and will try to research this. If you know of any sources for info on this, it would be great.

Anyone else out there tried this driver yet? If so, we'd love to hear your experience. If not, it sounds like caution might be in order.

Guest TheRealist

Attempting to downloaded this so called terrible and lets all run away in fear and terror of a MSI video driver , after putting on my hard hat , goggles , face shield and heavy gloves I then succesfully downloaded this driver, after looking at it I noticed a nice feature I must have failed to see in all the other drivers ,a blue ,red and green individual adjustment unlike all others which then made gaming (AOEIII)and the internet a whole new experiance, so far no problems with this Dell 9300 (6800 video card) have shown itself.I recomend downloading this driver (with inserting the given INF) but only after going to the local hardware store or millitary

surplus store to get the proper protection to remove all fear of ones notebook exploding fragmentarily in ones face with this untested and badmouthed MSI driver.

TheRealist (I fear not, so lets download it.) :jumpyjoy:

Not sure if I should blame this driver or if it was just bad luck.

Here's what happened (the system is XP SP2, 2GB RAM, 4 hard disks, 3 CDs, NVidia 5950 Ultra, Audigy Platinum eX).

1) 3 months ago I upgraded the power supply from 450W to 500W. No need really but the old one was noisy.

2) As of 2 days ago, I was using the 84.21 driver.

3) I found out that the Audigy external box was not working and it came out that when the shop upgraded the supply, they forgot to plug in the power connector to the Audigy daughter card.

So I did it myself and Audigy was back to normal. I could now feed it audio using an optical cable from a DVD player. So far so good.

4) A day later, I installed the 84.26. Or tried to.

This set has a Sysinfo driver in it that for some reason it hung my system while being installed.

A reboot didn't help. It would switch to hi-res graphics but was unable to even bring up the logon box.

Booting up in VGA mode, or Safe mode, was fine. I could get hi-res using the default Windows drivers.

Looking at the system in Safe mode, only the nv4_mini.sys and nv4_disp.dll were installed. None of the other nv* files (they were stuck within a NVxxx.TMP folder within \Windows).

5) Trying to reinstall the same drivers or even the previous version, wouldn't go through. The install would get stuck during installation. The mouse would move but the clicks had no effect and keyboard was dead. Eventually, after many tries, I managed to put back an older release by staying completely in Safe mode (installing from and rebooting again into Safe mode).

6) Back to normal mode, the system would be stuck again trying to bring up the logon screen!!

7) Checking for corrupted disks, virii, trojans and such, didn't produce anything.

8) So, on a hunch, I unplugged again the power from the Audigy daughter card. Lo and behold, the system booted up fine.

So what might have happened?

The Audigy+daughter card was working fine with the smaller power supply I used to have and they also worked fine for up to 84.21 drivers.

Could the 84.26 set up something that caused the current driver to pull much more current than needed when it switches to hi-res?

Any ideas?

Well I do have a friend named Scott Cutler who works in Nvidia's driver department who is also involved on a project on Sourceforge I frequent. This is what he said quote for quote:

"The 84.26s are drivers that we were testing, but were not totally finished with the debugging phase in fact the code used was not even stable yet. They by no means are of WHQL status as we have not even submitted them to Microsoft's certification department for thorough testing. We too had experienced some voltage issues and display problems with legacy products from the GeForce4 Ti 4x00 series through the GeForce 6x00 series of cards and some of our newer 7x00 series. We did not authorize these drivers to be distributed by any vendor of our products and we are in contact with vendors that did recieve these drivers to halt distributing them on the CD-ROMs shipped with their products and remove them from their driver distribution systems. Most drivers that are authorized for release from the developers and quality control department are drivers and variants taken from our public FTP file server which consist mostly of WHQL from our webpage, BETAs found on nZone, and special OEM released drivers which usually are only found on the FTP server but never officially published.

This is also why we state that we are not responsible for problems contributed by unofficial drivers that could arrive such as malfunctioning hardware, broken or damaged hardware, and even poor or improper performance. Just about all our vendors also use this same statement. I do thank you for contacting us about this WhiteTiger and hopefully you have not damaged you hardware by usage of these drivers. We do suggest you contact the manufacturer for software or other utilities to test your hardware and ensure it's working status.

Best Regards,

Scott Culter

Nvidia Corporation

Driver Development Department"

I didn't experience any display issues but then again I never got far enough to even start up anything to try them out.

Thank you much for the info.

So this driver had known voltage problems. Glad to hear that. I was afraid that maybe the Audigy card was cooked.

Since it looks like the driver fools around with the voltages, does anybody know where (probably in the registry) this info is stored? For anybody willing to bother, they could always fix the registry entry in Safe Mode and keep using the driver.

Why would MSI want this driver ?

Why would Microsoft give WHQL status to this driver ?

Does this driver have WHQL status or did MSI just include a WHQL certificate to make it look like it has.

So many questions with only 1 answer, it's probably best to avoid this driver and move onto 84.30

There is a difference between using your manufacturer driver and using the same driver version with a modded INF file.

In the first case your manufacturer supports everything your GPU has to offer... even the weird customized coffee maker attached to the GPU heatpipe.

In the second case, you might face some missing features such as in my order of importance: PowerMizer, suspend modes, tv-out... *you pick*

Check out my system specs... I use the official Dell 84.30... because it's a good reliable driver that happen to support 100% of my needs on my laptop. The only thing missing is the new PureVideo filtering that appeared in 91.31... which I don't use THEREFORE I don't need.

yeah i see what you're saying......one thing i hate about them is that they really do suck at practically everything  was on the phone with them yesturday all ###### day just so i can get them to send me a thermal patch....final they agreed.....TO SEND ME ONE SINGLE THERMAL PATCH :P :P yeah, they suck.....i noticed something though, with the 84.21 drivers, there is a conflict with the original control panel that you access when you right click on the destop and hit properties... :)

The only telephone hotline I ever called was for a friend who saw his 40Gb HDD physically fry 20Gb... it was the french HP hotline... after 15s in french I had to switch to english because the indian guy SUCKED at both french and technical support.

I knew what I was doing and I stayed like and hour with them... I downloaded and ran a couple of HDD diagnostic tools that speeded up the replacement. When you know that you need a RMA and it takes 1h to get it... it makes you think to miss Jane Doe that got a laptop from the local supermarket.
