Inspirion 8100 Screen Fades to black and colored stripes

Dell Inspiron 8100 w/ nVidia GeoForce card.

Occasionally, and unpredictiably, the screen just fades away to partial black with vertical stripes of green, purple, and black.

Only solution is to re-start...and loose everything not recently saved.....very annoying.

On restart, everything comes back to normal???

No particularly repeatable circumstances.

What to do??

What driver version are you running, and do you have the latest BIOS for your motherboard?

Have you checked the flex cable going to the LCD?

Does tilting your LCD cause this at all?

Does it happen in windows WITHOUT graphics card drivers installed?
