BSOD whenever I install display drivers

* Dell Inspiron 9300

* GeForce Go 6800

* No current drivers :)

* Last usable drivers were 84.25 but reinstalling them or rolling back does not solve issue

* Windows XP Home SP2

I think that sums everything up. The system boots fine into safe mode and normal windows without complaint but whenever I try and install new drivers, the rebooted system STOPs at the blue pre-logon screen.

I've tried a variety of 8xxx drivers and infs, including the current official Dell release (8430), but none have worked. Going to reinstall DX9c and try again, but if anyone can think of anything please let me know.

Have you used DriverCleaner to get rid of driver remnants?

(a working system restore point is a godsend sometimes...)

I did a pretty thorough clean on my own, but DriverCleaner showed up a couple of registry keys I missed.

Still no change though. When I try and install the drivers, they fail at the end with a "This parameter is incorrect" error...

I'm going to try 7xxx and 6xxx but I'm beginning to think this isn't to do with the drivers. I think a reformat might be in order if anyone can't think of something.

Would writing down the exact STOP error help?

Problem solved by a reformat. On 8443 now.

I think it was a generally destablising system, really - I got locked out of making any changes to the RunOnce registry settings last week. And it's nice to have everything fresh and smooth again... plus I still have all my Oblivion saves :)
