Yet another "dumb" query from me.....

You'll be getting used to my dumbass questions by now but, since I'm a serial tweaker, I usually end up screwing up somewhere or other. So, before I tweak:

  1. What, in plain English, is overclocking
  2. What are the potential hazards of doing it

Again, all thanks in advance.

If a device has a clock of 100MHz and you tweak it to run at 110MHz, you have overclocked the device.

It might blow up :) or, slightly less dramatic, it might work erratically.

Yeah, but what does it actually do?

If the processing power of a GPU or CPU was linear to the clock... overclocking it 10% will make the GPU or CPU 10% faster. The major side effect is that the overclocked device produce more heat. And heat is not the best thing to sillicon. When done beyond standard temperature the overheating caused by the overclocking can kill the device faster than a non overclocked device.
