First off I would like to commend you on such a useful website, please keep up the excellent work; the info here has helped me with many Alienware problems that Alienware were unwilling or unable to rectify!!

So enough waffling, my question is as follows: I have an Area-51m laptop (have to say im not completely sure what version) with the Geforce fx go 5700 graphics card and I want to upgrade, does anyone know what?s the best card it can take??? I really wanted to upgrade to a geforce go 6800 ultra. I phoned Alienwhatever and the first guy I talked to knew less about the laptop than I did. I was eventually told that the best card it can take is the geforce go 6600, but only because that is the only version they have that is agp!!! Can anyone help me, has anyone upgraded, and if they have where the hell do I buy one online?I have checked but to no avail!!!! Thanks in advance for any advice or help!!

Your machine is not upgradable as is :)

The go5700 is AGP based and the go6x00 and go7x00 are all PCI-e based.

You have reached the end of the line with your GPU.

You might be able to upgade the MB to a PCI-e one and then add a go7800 or what ever.

But this will cost many $$ and not guaranteed to fit your machine.

Your only real option is to upgrade machine.

Glad you like it here, hopefully you still like us even with this bad news :)

Feck!!!! The support tech in Alienware told me i could at least upgrade to the Geforce go 6600....so was he mistaken, he didnt sound too confident!!! Cant believe it, ###### laptop cost me ?4000+ a little over a year and a half ago...well that was a good investment...NOT!!! Bought this laptop specifically because it was "supposed" to be upgradeable....looks like i will have to ask alienwhatever how much they would like to shaft me for to upgrade the mobo to pci !!! Anyway thanks again for your advice and taking the time to reply.

Just off the phone with Alienware (europe) and was told that allegidly they are working on a graphics upgrade for the 766 model laptop, but only if enough prople request it. The guy said that they werent sure if it would be ati or nvidia but would be somewhere around the geforce go 6600/6800!! So was the guy just saying more than his prayers to stop me phoning or has anyone else heard anything similar??

Hmmm, AFAIK, AW only buys notebook chassis and the videocards that go with it. It's not AW that's going to design it, so they probably don't have a clue.

So, the real question is will the original manu provide an upgrade possibility to AW? And yes, that probably depends on demand.

AW get the chassis from Clevo and slap their own case on some models.

AW don't make the lappies at all, they may have some input to what Clevo put's in future models.

I'm not sure who makes the graphics boards for Clevo/AW, but the go5700 being AGP8x and from then on all go6x00 and 7x00 (that matter) are PCIe, so there could never be an upgrade as they are differnent interfaces.

AW are just misleading the public with those statements as they are phycically impossible to implement. :)
