®®®
Here is WinAAM v1.8 (HD Automatic Acoustic Managment Changer for Windows). Normally you need to do that under DOS with HD manufacturere software. You can change from quiet, but slow access or "loud" and fast access. This app comes from c'T ComputerMagazin (german one) from 2002, but works with my 7K60. NICE! Only downside is you can't disable AAM, thats only possible with HD manufacturer software. This app is in German and you need to have the original driver for HDs from MS installed. Third Party software or alternative IDE-Controller Software is not supported (that's what the author wrote). So i assume that this app is not working with the Intel Application Accellerator software. - File is 14 KB WinAAM_v1.8.zip
mobilenvidia
HDTach 2.9.2.3 (beta v3.0) This is the best (arguably) Hard Drive Benchmarking program. Download, then just install. It's a beta version, but will update program as newer versions come out. This will show how your brand new 60GB 7200RPM drive does against others. HDTach 2923 (1059KB) Enjoy, Pieter. ®®®
This is HiTACHi (IBM) "PowerBooster2K" v1.30 for HiTACHi/IBM drives only: What it does ------------ Power Booster is a small Windows utility which lets the user control the power saving features of his or her mobile disk drive. The program is designed to work with Hitachi Travelstar 2.5" disks but will work with any ATA disk drive that implements the Advanced Power Management control set. The Advanced Power Management commands are new in the ATAPI-4 standard for ATA disk drives. Although Travelstar drives have incorporated a technology called Adaptive Battery Life Extender for several years, the settings have been hidden from the user. This program lets users set the level of power saving they want, giving a range of settings from very aggressive power saving to full-on performance. Release notes and system requirements ------------------------------------- Microsoft Windows 95, 98, 2000 and XP are tested and supported. There is no Windows NT support. You need the following Microsoft MFC and Windows libraries installed: MSVCRT.dll, MFC42.dll, KERNEL32.dll, USER32.dll (They will already be installed on most machines.) The program is set for a 5 second AC and slider polling interval. If the program is exited, the drive will remain in the last mode set. filesize: 283K PowerBooster2K.exe
®®®
This is TOSHiBAs CD Silencer, which is able (not tested by me, though) to reduce the spinning speed in idle mode to get rid of annoying noises and vibrations. Like i said i haven't tested this feature. As far as i know there are other tools like "Drive Speed v2.00.1" from the King of Kings: the NERO team, which has a comparable feature. The TOSHiBA tool installs 2 files in a TOSCDSPD folder and a ControlPanel file in %WINDIR%\system32. Reports & Feedback is always appreciated. TOSHiBA CD Silencer | filesize 943.558 bytes //edit You may also want to merge this regfile to include the CD Silencer Control Panel in your Toshiba Console application (under Customize Your Computer). If the Icon doesn't appear change the number from 19 to something else which isn't used (or write a PM) CD.DVD.Silencer.reg

Bill
*Looks at the HDTach software that Pieter posted* That software is nice but when I ran it it said it was out of date and the program quit, for anyone that is interested the new version can be found here. http://simplisoftware.com/Public/index.php?request=HdTach It is really nice and I am about to compare the 2 HDs I have on this laptop, and see how fast the USB 2.0 and Firewire interfaces hold up. (on the external one) I hope it was helpfull that I posted a link to the latest version of the software. Bill

"It detects shocks and vibration to your computer and then automatically moves the head of the Hard Disk Drive (HDD) to a safe location, reducing the risk of damage to your HDD." I installed it successfully on my Laptop (needs a reboot to access the Control Panel), but can't say if it really works for other than the specified R series as i will not shake and rattle my Laptop/HDD for testing reasons :) . It says the software uses a sensor (probably installed in the R series Laptops) to detect vibrations. It creates a service which automatically starts at every reboot, copies a ControlPanel file to system32 (ThpProp.cpl ) and the actual service .EXE (ThpSrv.exe). Furthermore a small (16kb) driver .SYS file gets installed to system32/drivers (thpdrv.sys). ®®®
*UPDATE 23-MAR-2005* SilentDrive v2.1 (added commandline usage possibility) The tool is in german, the available settings for AAM are (from left to right): aus=off, laut=loud, mittel=average, leise=silent Here's the explanation of AAM in english (LINK): Automatic acoustics-management (AAM)Contemporary modern hard disks with IDE-interface have a so-called automatic acoustics-management. As the name already says, it is a question at that of the troublesome noise topic. With this procedure the hard disk heads are quickened in a smaller way and slowed down in a smaller way. Result: The hard disk heads do less noise clearly in the case of hard disk grips. This noise is to be heard as a rattle. The noise of the spindle motor which drives the hard disk remains prospective on the other hand. With this small program you can configure the AAM. BUL
Toshiba SDR6012 Firmware UpdateVersion 1334 This Firmware Update corrects a potential write error from the DVD-R/RW SDR6012 drive. Models: Satellite 5200-903, Satellite 5200-904, Satellite 2450-114, Satellite 2450-S103, Satellite 2450-S303, Satellite 5200-S802, Satellite 5200-902, Satellite 5200-802D, Satellite 5200-802, Satellite 2450-S402, Satellite 2450-S203, Satellite A20, Satellite 5200-801 PAGE / DOWNLOAD FYI--this upgrade also works with SDR-6012 drives in Toshiba Satellite 5205-S703 machines (and I'm assuming 5205-S704s). My 5205-S703's drive now has firmware 1334. The upgrade solved a DVD writing problem that made several coasters... IMPORTANT NOTE--When applying this patch to a SDR-6012 on a 5205-S703, make sure it is a 13xx firmware product only. (I read somewhere that all of the SDR-6012s in Toshiba StyleBays have the 13xx revision). XP doesn't give you the firmware version, so you'll need something like Nero to figure out what you have. There are 3 families out there for SDR-6012s: 10xx, 13xx, and 17xx, and their most recent firmware revisions are 1034, 1334, and 1734, respectively. The link above is to the hardest to find patch, for the 13xx product family. (The 10xx and 17xx patches are readily available)...
