Geforce Go 6200 in a Toshiba laptop

I asked about updating the drivers to the latest Forceware on the Toshiba (the current version is 71.41) and someone replied with a decent point. He basically said that the newer drivers would stress the card more than the Toshiba-supplied one and it wasn't a wise move to install them.

I replied that since the drivers were meant to work with several chipset types, wouldn't the driver automatically detect my 6200's capabilities and thus be a safe way to go?

Who is right? I think he does have a slight point but judging from my ATI card on my other laptop, newer drivers don't usually harm the card (at least the modified Catalyst i've got hasn't caused any problems so far).
